GMOs linked to cancer
The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Organisms (now Just Label It) was the first activist cause that I joined in college. The Internet opened up a whole new world for me and I became politically and socially active in a huge variety of causes that I continue caring about to this day, but I do remember “The Campaign” as the first newsletter I signed up for in 2001.
Since then, there have been arguments over GMOs constantly. Even though several other countries have banned them, our leaders and GMO manufacturers insist that they’re completely safe and blah blah blah while we argue that we just want them LABELED so we know what we’re eating. To this day, we have not achieved this.
But we do know that GMOs are not completely safe, as we’ve been told over and over again. A recent study proved that GMOs cause cancer in rats. The photos here may shock you; the tumors are about as big as the rats themselves, if not bigger. While I’m no fan of testing on animals, I have to ask that if we’re testing on them to prove something is safe for humans and it’s NOT, then why are we still allowing such things on the market? Money, of course.
In the US, we ask questions later! We release a product, and THEN test for its safety. I fear we will have a whopping increase in cancer in our population soon, since we don’t even know if we’re buying GMOs or not in our food—and given that our own government has a patent on cannabis for treating disease and won’t let anyone else develop one, I’d say we’re royally screwed. Perhaps we should all move to countries that ban GMOs just so we won’t freaking get cancer.
Oh, I know these trials only show a link to cancer, not a cause. But given that female mice died 2-3 times more, and more rapidly, when given GMOs than without, and they developed mammary tumors, and the males developed rapid liver necrosis… I would call this proof for at the very minimum a moratorium of GMO foods until more research is conducted.
If you are as disturbed by this news as I am—as we all should be, for cryin’ out loud—and you want to tell the FDA to start doing its JOB and get our food at least labeled already, click here and tell them right now. We have a right to know if what we are buying has been linked to cancer or not. We have a right to protect ourselves and our families.
