Lord Romney - Out of Touch

What principles guide Mitt Romney's run for the Presidency?

A few days ago Rick Santorum referred to President Obama as a “snob” because Obama wants students to go to college (or some other post high school education or training).  Yet, the GOP have a series of snobs running.  Okay, maybe snob isn’t the word – maybe many are just smug.  The Chief Smugger seems to be Mitt Romney.  As mentioned before, he seems extremely out of touch with main street America.  And, his lack of sincerity and regular flip-flopping makes many wonder what principles drive Mitt Romney and his run for the Presidency.

It seems beyond Romney’s ability to persuade most people of his genuineness.  Not even many in the GOP believe Romney stands behind their tenets.   One thing that hasn’t changed during the course of his campaign, and the guiding principle that drive him, is Romney’s firm belief that he deserves to be president.  His inability to conceal that sense of entitlement makes his campaign and attempt to connect so awkward.  Here are some examples:

  • Campaigning in his native Michigan, he assured voters that his wife drives not just one $50,000 Cadillac, but two.
  • Visiting the Daytona 500 Romney admitted he’s not a close follower of NASCAR but does have friends who own racing teams.
  • Defending himself on Fox News from the perception that he is out of touch, Romney said, "If people think that there is something wrong with being successful in America, then they better vote for the other guy, because I've been extraordinarily successful and I want to use that success and that know-how to help the American people.” (1)
  • On the "Today" show, Romney explained that people concerned with income inequality are simply jealous. “You know, I think it’s about envy," he said. “I think it’s about class warfare. When you have a president encouraging the idea of dividing America based on the 99 percent versus 1 percent—and those people who have been most successful will be in the 1 percent — you have opened up a whole new wave of approach in this country, which is entirely inconsistent with the concept of one nation under God.” (2)

Romney’s air of superiority appears to be the one topic about which he is absolutely sincere. That’s what makes him such a terrible liar.  Modest, humble people don’t run for president.  President Obama often appears to have trouble restraining his frustration with the behavior of less intelligent people. Nevertheless, Romney’s unrestrained self-centeredness points to a desire  to put the right people back firmly in charge and the lower orders back in their place.

So – peasants beware, Romney’s true guiding principle has less to do with getting our economy back on track and more to do with making him number one.  Romney would be our feudal lord whom we should all look to with awe.
