Bill Nye, the most epic of science guys, recently released a video through Big Think begging people to not teach creationism and keep our youth scientifically literate. There seems to be a REALLY, REALLY poor understanding in that group about the difference between scientific theory vs. hypothesis. There seems to be confusion about how scientific theory IS actually fact, with theories as to WHY that fact is. For example, evolution is fact, we can take it, study it, observe it constantly and yes, we can even force it ourselves in a controlled environment. It's fact. The theory comes from what drives it, why does it sometimes take millions of years and other times a mere generation or two, etc. whereas a hypothesis is when you don't know anything about how or why something is the way it is on any level other than “poof- it just is.”
