Mountain minimalist: Anton Krupicka

Ultrarunning with little more than shorts, lightweight shoes and a bottle of water

Anton Krupicka is a household name in the trail running community. In addition to his long list of victories (including winning the Leadville 100 twice and setting a course record at the White River 50 Miler in 2010), he 's been profiled in two documentaries: Indulgence: 1000 Miles Under the Colorado Sky and Unbreakable: The Western States 100

Apart from his incredible wins on some of the world's toughest courses, Krupicka is best known for being the most minimalist of ultrarunners. He runs with little more than a pair of shorts, lightweight shoes and a small bottle of water. He carries none of the flashy extras that other trail runners have come to depend on: no GPS, no hydration pack and no mp3 player.

Krupicka's approach to running comes with a duality, one which extends to other areas of his life. As a grad student with B.A.s in physics and philosophy, he's an athlete and an intellectual; he follows no special diet and admits that he doesn't always eat right, but he believes in the importance of healthy food for an optimal running performance. Most of all, he views his running accomplishments with a candid mix of pride and matter-of-fact humility.
