Sri Lanka’s Buddhist festival of culture, costume, elephants and dancing
Throughout late July and early August of each year, the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka is host to the Buddhist festival of Esala Perahera. This ancient cultural tradition lasts for around two weeks and is celebrated to put on display a holy relic of the Buddhist religion. It is believed that Esala Perahera first took place as long ago as the early 4th century, though historic records go back only as far as the 5th century.
