Running myths

Separating running facts from fiction

Whether you're training for your first marathon or just want extra info about the sport, there's plenty to know about running. There are also plenty of rumors in the running world that are commonly accepted as fact. Below is a list of popular running misconceptions that you can happily disregard if you haven't already.

The treadmill is the same as running outside. Not by a long shot. But the treadmill isn't all bad, either. Let's start with the good. The treadmill is great on days when running outside isn't an option. The treadmill is also a decent way to practice speed work or intervals. And now for the bad. The treadmill is easier than running outside. Even if you increase the machine's speed or elevation, you're still not getting the high-impact workout that you'd have if you were running on pavement. It's basically like running in place while the machine does the hard work for you. In short, if it's too hot, too icy, or simply unsafe to hit the streets, running on the treadmill is better than nothing. Just don't make a habit of it.
