The Sapporo Snow Festival

On the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido is a festival that follows a tradition that was started in 1950.  This is no great and historic holiday, instead being initiated by the actions of a few bored school kids who decided to build some snow statues during the winter.  Since then, it has gotten bigger and bigger, spreading to various locations and attracting tourists from all over the world.  What were once a few interesting snow constructions has progressed to a massive undertaking of ice sculptures and intense snow-crafting displays.
