The moral vegetarian
OK... I understand and respect the environmental and health justifications surrounding the typical vegetarian/vegan "lifestyle". However, I SINCERELY do not understand how we (as humans) can truly believe that we UNDERSTAND the nature of pain, self-awareness, consciousness and sentience in relation to any organic life. I keep reading about how cruel meat eaters are and how beautiful it is to be a vegetarian or vegan.
How can I KNOW that the plant that I am eating (still fresh with water running through its "living" veins) has NO awareness and does not experience sorrow when torn from its home. Picked, packed, shipped, displayed, bought, sold, refrigerated, cooked, and eaten all while still "alive"… plants had better not suffer if we put them through all that. When did the plant (which displays the same eagerness to live as all other organic "life") volunteer to be eaten by humans?
Some (if not all) of our ancient ancestors regarded plants as conscious beings that could actually help humans distinguish between edible and non-edible species, provide guidance in the art of healing, grant blessings to their children, capture a persons soul, etc.... Some cultures regard/ed plants as our teachers and our brothers. This, however, did not make it morally wrong to respectfully eat the plants which nourish "life" in the form we have called human.
I feel that the same "life" which interprets the data my body gathers must be the same "life" which inspires the plant body to grow and respond to its environment. I do not understand how we have judged the ideas of awareness, pain, sentience, consciousness and the like to be an exclusive trait of animals. Is it possible that we are unfortunately arrogant to assume that it takes eyes to "see", nerves to "feel" and a "heart" to care? I do not have KNOWLEDGE of this situation, do you? If you can teach me RIGHT from WRONG in these situations, please help me.

Gris Grimly, creepy, dark and totally cool
Gris Grimly is one of my favorite kid's book author and illustrator. Grimly's style is creepy, dark and humorous. I have a couple of his books and they are at the top of my favorites list.
I came upon his books while shopping for my daughter's eighth birthday a few years ago. Every birthday she gets a couple of really nice hardback books, usually classics with beautiful illustrations, that year she requested that I refrain from buying cutesy, girly books. So after digging through all the books with bunnies, and fairies, and princesses I finally struck gold with Gris Grimly's Wicked Nursery Rhymes. The following year I got Edgar Allen Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness illustrated by Grimly.
Grimly's style is reminiscent of Edward Gorey with a touch of Tim Burton. His color palette is subdued, mostly earthy tones on sharp, dramatic black line; but the characters he creates evoke a creepy feeling in the reader. Grimly's make believe world is a dark one for sure. The book is recommended for kids ten and older due to the dark humor. But could it be too dark for the little ones? I don't think so, has anyone else read these books?

Lil Bow Wow has a big mouth
Lil Bow Wow ain't so little anymore, people! And he's become quite the cocky one, maybe it's because he's dating Rev. Run's daughter Vanessa Simmons(not to be confused with Angela, Vanessa's little sister, whom Bow Wow dated on-again, off-again last year). The young rapper was recently seen in a YouTube video challenging bad-ass rapper the Game to a 'Madden NFL 09' face off, the stakes: 100Gs, which the winner would donate to a charity. They haven't set a date yet for when the show-down will go down, but we will definitely keep you posted about the winner. Who do you think would win? My bet's with the Game, he's been playing since '88, and like I mentioned earlier, he's a bad-ass. Lil Bow Wow's a lil' punk with big mouth. Right?
Rage Against the Machine to hijack political event
One of my favorite alt-rock bands of all time, Rage Against the Machine, is back! They recently reformed to play at the Reading and Leeds festivals last weekend in the UK. Sadly, the band says they have no plans to record any new material. One thing that is planned however, is a stunt at the Republican Convention next week in Minneapolis. The politically opinionated rockers want to picket the event and no doubt will get media attention, so stay tuned. I think it's great that there is a band with enough balls to go out there and voice their opinions about things that actually matter, like say, presidential elections. Some people think that it is not job of musicians to be political, but I say, music is art and art reflects life, isn't our government an aspect of life? This is why I love old school alt-rock, it had relevance, it was a true voice for youth. Today's "alternative" music is nothing but whiny and self-indulgent, don't you think?
Check out the new single, it kinda sucks
Metallica's new album "Death Magnetic" is close to being done and the band has released their first single The Day That Never Comes. Check it out it's available for listening on their website. I just heard it and honestly I can't help but feel a little disappointed and sad that they've lost their edge. The new single feels contrived, unauthentic....like an imitation of an imitation of Metallica in the 80s; it's over-produced, watered down, and just keeps missing the mark. The single starts out sounding like Fade To Black, and that's the best I can say about it, from there it's all a down-hill spiral of thrashing riffs that go nowhere. These guys are loosing their relevance in todays pop culture.... What do you think, is their age showing?
