The Owl and the Woodpecker
The Owl an the Woodpecker by Paul Bannick
For fans of owls and woodpeckers, and all birds alike, this is a beautiful book. Paul Bannick's photographs of North America's owls and woodpeckers are spectacularly shot. His photos capture the birds in their natural habitats. There is feeling of intimacy between the photographer and the birds, as he captures the close relationships that woodpeckers have with owls. Bannick's photos of the birds mating, feeding, and nesting bring the viewer up close and personal to the bird's daily rythms. This is a beautiful, educational, inspiring book that reminds us of the fascinating variety of bird habitats and the adaptations made by owls and woodpeckers. One fascinating woodpecker is the Acorn Woodpecker which stores its winter supply of acorns in holes that it pecks into snags (dead trees) - which is one reason to leave dead trees standing in commercial forests.
Paul's passion for wilderness conservation is apparent in his writing and in the treatment of his images, which he shoots while kayaking, snowshoeing, and just exploring nature. Check out his website paulbannick.com to learn more aboutthis fascinating author, photographer, nature conservationist.
Paul Bannick will also be doing a series of lectures and slide shows at different locations in the Puget Sound area. Be sure to check him out, he is an engaging speaker and teacher.

When in Rome, don't insult the Pope 'cause you might go to jail
Italian comedian Sabrina Guzzanti learned this lesson the hard way. The comedian/ actress narrowly escaped prosecution and a five-year prison sentence because of her off-color remarks made at a leftist rally. Guzzanti was speaking out against the Vatican's global campaign against gay marriage when she said:
"Within 20 years the Pope will be where he ought to be -- in hell, tormented by great big poofter devils, and very active ones, not passive ones."
These comments prompted prosecutor Giovanni Ferrara to threaten to prosecute the actress for offending the honor of the sacred and inviolable person of the pope. In order to move forward with prosecution, Ferrara has to invoke the Lateran Treaty to enforce this law.
But the treaty, signed by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, required government approval before the investigation could go forward. Luckily for Guzzanti, Justice Minister Angelino Alfano decided to block it.
