Problem with trans?

I own a 95 VW Golf. Today in high traffic where we moved a car length every 10 minutes my car ran into an issue. After about an hour of this I noticed that my car was not moving as much as it should for the gas I was giving it. It continued when traffic started to flow. My speedometer would stick at 30 in 3rd gear, but I was giving it gas enough to put me at 40. Once I had stopped and driven a bit more into a parking lot, I dropped it into 1st gear and the problem was not there. I did smell something burning like after you use your breaks heavily for hours. That is all I noticed. Thank you in advance, Chris

Our Sweet Dal has Skin Cancer

Suzie is a rescue dalmation that we saved last year. When we got her, we noticed a small lesion on her stomach which turned out to be cancerous. We had our vet remove it via surgery and thought that it was all gone; however, she has a new lesion about the size of a dime on the other side now. We have scheduled another surgery at our vet for next week. Has anyone out there experienced a similar problem with their dal? We are saddened, as expected, and worry whether we're doing the right thing or not. Any suggestions? I am attaching a picture. We look forward to any responses!

Joss Whedon: You Kinda Owe The Guy

It's hard to believe it's been nearly six years since the unjust gassing of Firefly. Now, possibly out of some kind of penance (or corporate ratings calculation), Fox has given genre master Joss Whedon another shot at major network exposure. This time around, Whedon has traded in spaceships for hot chicks in a unique sci-fi outing called Dollhouse. The premise of Dollhouse is that a group of young women have their minds and bodies reprogrammed by the secret titular organization for various reasons. Sometimes they're killers, sometimes they're fantasy dates. I'm sure as the series progresses we'll get to see any number of other applications of the technology, especially considering that this is a story tailor-made for stand-alone canned episodes. There are plenty of familiar faces in the cast of Dollhouse, and with good reason. Whedon's last outing with Fox had a stellar cast (no pun intended), but many of them came from the fringes of television and independent film. They were recognizable but they weren't draws for TV audiences. Such is not the case this time around. Star Eliza Dushku may have gotten her big break from Joss Whedon as Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer but we've seen plenty of her since then. By taking on the role of "Echo" Dushku has cemented herself as what Farscape star Claudia Black referred to as a "sci-fi babe". Despite the extremely short run of Tru Calling, Dushku proved herself capable of taking on a lead role with nuance. It'll be interesting to see Whedon push her boundaries. Aside from the requisite Buffy alum, Whedon has pulled his cast from some high-profile corners of film and television. Those of you who are already sci-fi fans should recognize the actor playing FBI Agent Paul Smith. It's Tahmoh Penikett, aka Karl "Helo" Agathon of Battlestar Galactica. Among others are Harry Lennix of 24 and Enver Gjokaj of The Unit. Fans of Joss Whedon (and there are many) have come to expact a certain balance of drama and humor from his work. Dollhouse itself is being billed as a drama, but seeing as it's a Mutant Enemy production I suspect it'll be as much a dramedy as other modern favorites like House. Whedon is not only the chief writer on this project, he'll also be directing a nice chunk of the first season episodes. Because the guy can't ever seem to be too busy, Whedon will also be putting together a slew of webisodes that are reported to come out on a weekly basis. Set to debut on Februrary 19th after another one of Fox's sci-fi gambles, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse is chock-full of promise. It'll be slick and sexy so it's likely to last longer than Firefly on sheer visual awe, be it the stunning set pieces or the flesh that inhabits them. Were the show in somebody else's hands I wouldn't have much faith that Dollhouse would be worth the timeslot when this year's TV schedule is already near critical mass for speculative fiction. But this is Joss Whedon we're talking about. He's yet to let us viewers down, even when we can't say the same for the networks that air his shows.

FDA Warns Consumers of Dangers Associated With Botox Injections

A recent FDA (Food and Drug Administration) warning has been issued, effective immediately, warning consumers about the risks that are associated with using the popular injected beauty treatments, Botox. Classified as outlined toxins types A and B for both FDA-approved and unapproved use. Basically the reports states that you are injecting your body with dangerous toxins to improve beauty, but do not pretend like there are not inherent and now known risks that go hand in hand with this popular treatment. The warning applies to all who intend or have used Botox, most importantly related to children and women, who are at the highest risk of contracting dangerous and adverse side effects after receiving these injections.

The Risks Associated with Using Botox

The risk: Death. Most people that suffered from a side effect were hospitalized and later released. But many children, treated with Botox for cerebral palsy-associated limb spasticity were at the greatest risk of dying. In addition, other recent FDA reports have also lambasted the popular facial injections for beauty, as more reports come in showing women who suffered from respiratory failure, or a variety of serious and sometimes mild side effects, including: cysts, infection, swelling, and others. Basically, the FDA was clear to state that no matter what you use these injections for, or how much, or how often, there is inherent associated risks. Period.

Never Let Beauty Come Before Health

Why, I must ponder, are people taking their lives into their own hands just to look better on the outside? Especially considering that using injections, like Botox, requires maintenance; it does not change anything for the long haul. So frequency over the years is required, placing those who do use it an even greater risk of suffering from a known and adverse side effect. But there are other, safer alternatives to injections.

Other, Safer Alternatives to Botox

The best alternatives that are currently available include over the counter wrinkle creams and eye creams. Newer wrinkle creams and eye creams have been clinically proven to increase skin firmness, eliminate the appearances of dark eye circles, wrinkles and others, and are entirely void of any side effects whatsoever. Furthermore, new wrinkle creams and eye creams work fast—typically within the first month of using them you will see genuine results. And, the best wrinkle creams and eye creams currently on the market cost far less than any facial injected treatment or dermal filler.

What Results You Can Expect with Alternative Treatments

Yes it is true, Botox can give you results a bit faster. But it’s more painful and intrusive and dangerous. The best wrinkle creams and eye creams currently on the market cost about eighty bucks per bottle, for a full month supply. The clinical test studies on many of these showed amazing results during the first four to six weeks of usage. And as usage increased, even greater results were realized. Case and point: never take your own life into your hands when it comes to beauty. Use safer, alternative treatments instead.

Dry Wine

People often talk about "dry wine" as something markedly special. You'll sometimes hear people use the word "dry" in reference to wine as a synonym for excellent. In an informal survey of academics at a party where all of them were drinking wine, and considered themselves fairly knowledgeable about wine, three people told me that a dry wine was an aged wine; two people told me dry wine was put on the labels of high quality white wines.

They were wrong, of course. "Dry," for wine, or beer, refers to the fact that the beverage is comparatively low in sugar because fermentation has converted the natural sugar of the grapes into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Sometimes the process is referred to as "fermenting out" the sugar. The naturally occurring yeast that causes fermenting has consumed the sugar and converted it to alcohol, carbon dioxide, and heat. The wine master ordinarily stops the fermentation before the sugar is consumed, but in order to make a dry wine, the yeast is allowed to do what it does best. In Europe the law stipulates that in order to be labeled "dry" the final wine is .4% or less (that's 4 grams per liter).

In order to make non-dry or "sweet" wine, the winery may add sweet grape juice (or juice concentrate) back to a dry wine; this is typically done in order to increase the alcohol content, rather than to make it taste sweeter. In California, winemakers are legally prohibited from adding sugar to wine. Other ways include adding additional alcohol to the wine, which is how Port or other "fortified" wines are made, or, most commonly, by stopping the natural fermentation process by adding sulfur to the wine, or cooling it to the point that the yeast can't survive, or a combination of both. Then of course, with the right sorts of wine, bottle aging tends to increase the dryness of a wine.

In English, you'll notice wine labels with "dry" or sometimes "Extra Dry" as a description; you may note sec, trocken, secco, or asciutto, on imported wines. The very dry wines often have a lovely character, but they can take a bit of getting used to if you typically drink Rieslings or other, sweeter wines. Keep in mind that most red table wines are dry by nature, even if they lack a label to that effect. Your Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon are likely dry.

You don't have to make the transition all at once, though. The Chateau Ste Michelle Dry Riesling, for example, retains much of the character and robustness of their traditional Riesling, just without quite so much sweetness. This makes it awfully nice with food, especially zesty, spicy, rich, or salty dishes. And gives you a chance to experiment with a wine that's familiar, extremely drinkable, but a good deal less sweet.

Very dry wines are also excellent to cook with, for making fondue, marinades, dressings, and reductions, because they're very flavorful without becoming syrupy. The process of experimenting is half the fun of buying and consuming unfamiliar wine, of course.

Why You Need Cat Health Insurance

I can easily recall a few months back when I found my cat outside bleeding—he is an outdoor indoor cat with his own kitty door and sometimes he can get into fights with other cats when playing outside during the day—and I knew that I needed to take him right into the veterinarian office to get checked out; to make sure that all was well. So about two hundred dollars later, and after a nice disinfecting of the lacerations on his paw, and of course, some minor antibiotics, I realized, hey this is really darn expensive. Which was when I decided that for the future, some cat health insurance may be in order for my hyper one year old Tabby. Why You Need Pet Health Insurance I looked around, and since I already had my dog Amadeus insured through IAMS VPI pet health insurance, I decided to see about adding my kitten. It cost about thirty bucks per month and it kicked in right away—all they did was contact the vet who signed and faxed them back a local form. I received my cat health insurance cards in the mail about ten business days later. Now, whenever I take him into the vet, I print out a claim form for my vet to sign and simply mail or fax it in to get reimbursed. And yes, it really can add up in then end. What Procedures Does it Cover? Surprisingly, the pet health insurance policy that I have covers nearly every known medical procedure for both cats and dog, and other pets as well. Of course there is a percentage that it covers—it does not work like traditional human health insurance. But, if you factor that I spent nearly two hundred smackers at the vet last time with my cat, and they would have sent me check for half, that would have easily paid for a few months of pet health insurance. And, they cover checkups and routine visits, so they cost half as well; essentially it pays for itself in the end. Who Provides Cat Health Insurance? There are a number of great providers that offer quality and affordable pet health insurance. Here are some providers that I was able to find during my searches online for the best pet health insurance out there. IAMS VPI – I recommend this plan over others because they offer online claim forms. Pet Care Insurance Programs is another great pet health insurance company that offers similar rates and coverages to IAMS. And finally, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is another great company that you can choose to go through. All offer similar rate plans and coverages, as well as claim processing efficiency. How Does it All Work? It is very basic how pet health insurance works. You bring a claim form into the office and have the vet sign it. You copy the invoice and mail it back in, or fax it back in with the claim form. They reimburse you for the difference of the percentage of the covered amount. Most pet health insurance companies will place an annual cap on the amounts that they will reimburse. For example, VPI will reimburse up to 14k annually.

How to Find the Best Online Deals—Some Simple Tips Revealed!

Who isn’t always looking for the next latest and greatest bargain to found?

Exactly! We all are, myself included, always on the prowl for the next big deal to be found. And to put it bluntly, online shopping will almost certainly yield to you the best deals to be found, in most cases. There are ample reasons behind why e-shopping is a deal finder and a money saver. Namely, because websites tend to have far less overhead or associated costs involved in their management and day to day operations than any local retail establishment does. This lowered cost of operations, combined with wholesale product acquisition, makes for some pretty sweet deals—deals that are passed on down to you and me: the avid and anxious, deal-ready consumer!

Finding Online Deals is Easily Done During the early days of ecommerce and the internet, finding deals online was far more tedious than it is in the technology laden world of today. These days, finding the best online deals sometimes simply means opening up your browser to a major search engine and querying the product or service that you are seeking. Then the consumer has their choice of merchants and ads to peruse, deciding which website or company has the deal that they desire. For sure, online shopping is the new medium of the deal fancying protagonist, and will be until the end of days, thanks to this new electronic internet medium. Things to Look for in Online Merchants There are some things that you want to assure are prevalent in any online merchant that you choose to do business with. First and foremost, assure that their website is protected from hackers by a big online security company that verifies that the site is safe to use every hour of every day; most sites will have a security badge that you can click to verify. Secondly, read up about them online and try to find customer reviews, so you can see what others have to say about their experiences with this company. And finally, make sure they offer free shipping and have a good returns policy, so you don’t have to fret about extra costs or returning defective items.

What is a Shopping Comparison Search Engine? The best way that you can go about finding the best deals online is by utilizing the power of a shopping comparison search engine. These are basically e-shopping search engines that thousands of online merchants pay a fee to be listed under. You simply type in the keywords of the product or service that you are seeking and they match you up with several merchants, compare the prices offered and even provide a star rating for customer feedback. This is the best way to find the best online shopping deals to ever be had. And you can know that you are dealing with an ethical and rated merchant. Shopping comparison search engines can save you hours of time that would otherwise be spent researching different ecommerce sites on your own. And, you will not find better deals or better rated merchants anywhere else. Some good shopping comparison search engines that I recommend include: netrate.com, bizrate.com, shopping.com and deals.com.

Could the end of the string of Seattle sports catastrophes finally be upon us?

Article by Jerod Allen

As the 2008 calendar year draws to a close, fans of Seattle sports breathe a collective sigh of relief. For those who root for Emerald City teams, this year can't end quickly enough.

To review the last three major professional team seasons in Seattle:

  • Mariners: 61-101, .377

  • Sonics: 20-62, .244

  • Seahawks (through week 14): 3-11, .214

So the Mariners, with their robust 38% rate of victory, have been by far the most successful franchise in Seattle in the past year. Of course, they had to spend over $100 million to reel off wins at that clip, which comes in at about $1.5 million per victory.

Throw in the historically bad University of Washington Huskies football team, and the four teams are a collective 102 games under .500 (84-186).

But, as everyone knows who suffered through this year—not just the worst year in Seattle sports history, but arguably the worst sports year any city has endured since Rome was overrun by the Vandals in 455 AD—the collective winning rates of these four teams is just the tip of the iceberg. An abbreviated list:

  • The Mariners become the first MLB team with a $100 million payroll to lose 100 games in a season.

  • The Sonics are unceremoniously relocated to Oklahoma City with the extremely vocal support of NBA commissioner David Stern.

  • The once-proud Huskies complete the second-ever winless season by an FBS program in college football history.

As 2008 winds down, however, some small signs of hope have begun to emerge for each team:

  • The Mariners finally fired Bill Bavasi, the architect of the patchwork, overpriced recent incarnation of the team, and brought in a new GM who immediately set to work at building the team back into a contender with timely trades and draft preparation.

  • The Huskies hired a new head coach from USC, one of the pre-eminent football factories in the country; young, energetic, and a solid recruiter, Steve Sarkisian has breathed new life into the program.

  • The Seahawks will get their highest draft pick in a decade and are in line to take Michael Crabtree from Texas Tech, one of the most exciting wide receiver prospects to come out of college in recent years. Not only is Crabtree a rare talent, he fills an extreme need for the 'Hawks, who saw their season derailed by multiple injuries to wide receivers early in the year.

  • Finally, even though the Sonics are gone, fans can find sour-grape solace in the fact that the Oklahoma City Thunder are on pace for the worst record in NBA history and have already started bleeding money in a struggling local and national economy.

In the past year, Seattle sports fans have come to expect the worst; as each team resets for 2009 with new leadership and optimism, the series of events that represented the worst year for a city in sports history will soon be but a distant memory.

We hope.
