The Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio

Three teams, 700 lb wooden poles and a race to the top of a mountain

Yet one more in a long line of strange and interesting Italian festivals is the Festa dei Ceri.  It takes place on May 15th of each year in the city of Gubbio and has its origins as far back as pagan times.  Some believe it to be a celebration to honor the goddess Ceres, others say it is connection to the victory of Gubbio against a united front of 11 cities, and still others claim the festival originated to recreate the funeral procession of the city’s patron saint, Saint Ubaldo.
