Hands-on plant lessons

Spring is one of my favorite times to homeschool. Our classroom moves outside as the temperatures warm and the world comes back to life. Young children enjoy the many hands-on activities this season has to offer. Get those little ones out in the garden for some impromptu science lessons.

Planting seeds is a simple process and children love digging in the dirt. We always sow a few in the garden bed but I also like to do a visual planting so the kids can see the plants send out roots and shoots. Fill a clear plastic cup with moist soil. Plant bean seeds around the edge of the cup, about an inch deep, so you can see the seed through the cup. As the seeds sprout, the children can see the roots grow and elongate and track the shoot as it reaches toward the light.
