Dairokuten-no-Hakada Matsuri

A Japanese harvest festival of flinging mud.

Dairokuten-no-Hakada, or the “mudslinging festival” as it’s more commonly known, is a small but unique event that takes place in Chiba during February.  Like many Japanese festivals, the point of the event is to bring people good luck.  This one happens to be focused on good health and prosperity for the community as well as a blessing for the year’s harvest.  Mud, being a part of the Earth and the place from which crops grow, is intimately connected to success in farming.  Healthy earth means healthy crops and thus good luck and strong health for all in the village.
