The great white shark is a migratory animal, tagging along behind the migration of the seals on which they feed. In the United States the population of great white sharks travels up and down the coastline over the course of the year. And with summer hitting its peak, the great white sharks have returned to Cape Cod amid much fanfare.
This year, unlike past years, the confirmation came early, and it came definitively. Two great whites which were tagged by researchers last year were detected by audio beacons off the shore of Cape Cod. No great surprise, surely, as the seals returned not long ago, and the great white is a common visitor to these waters. And yet, something about the scientific confirmation seems to have shaken people up a bit. One suspects that a lot of beachgoers in Massachusetts had been relying on denial to make their summer plans happy ones.
