Bolivia’s Oruro Carnival

Like Mardi Gras, but with more demons and 12,000 feet above sea level.

Bolivia’s Oruro Carnival is yet one more in a seemingly endless stream of amazing South American carnival traditions.  This one takes place in a small mining town as opposed to a large city but despite the size it still manages to be one of the largest and most festive of these events on the continent.  Like other Mardi Gras celebrations, Oruro Carnival takes place before Ash Wednesday, lasting eight days up until the preceding Fat Tuesday.
