Chicago hangs on to lead to beat the Lions last Monday night
Last Monday night the Chicago Bears were able to get past the Detroit Lions in a tightly fought game. Chicago ended up winning the game at Soldier Field 13-7. It was not pretty, but despite the score Chicago did dominate the game in many ways. The win propels them to 5-1 on the season, which is the best in the NFC North. Detroit finds their team in the division’s basement at just 2-4.
Chicago was relentless on defense and found enough offense to get the win. They too advantage of big mistakes by the Lions and have continued to show many that they could be a real threat in the NFC. Chicago jumped out to a hot start scoring ten points in the first quarter, but only scored three the remainder of the game. Their lone touchdown went to Brandon Marshall from Jay Cutler, as the two continue to build on a great relationship they found years ago in Denver. Cutler threw for only 150 yards, but the team made up for it with 171 rushing yards. These really helped control the clock and keep Detroit off the field.
When Detroit was on the field they found some success, but it would always fizzle out at the end. Stafford threw for 261 yards and had a touchdown to Broyles. The team also rushed for 99 yards on a Bears defense that gives up little. They made too many mistakes including fumbles and failed to make any progress in the game. Stafford and Megatron continue to struggle making the connection they have made numerous times in the past and they are all but out of any playoff hopes.

Patriots will travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams
The New England Patriots will meet the St. Louis Rams this Sunday at Wembley Stadium in Missouri this Sunday. The game could make for an interesting one, and is anything but a blow off game for the Patriots who have been a bit suspect this year. The Rams do play solid defense and are at home where they have shown to be successful. The Patriots, on the other hand, are beating teams by minimal margins and have been inconsistent on both sides of the ball.
The Patriots come into the game with a 4-3 record after barely escaping with a win from New York last week. That is when they defeated the Jets 29-26 in overtime after the Jets failed to take advantage of balls that bounced right in their direction and a win that all but landed right in their lap. They should have won the upset against the Patriots, but the Patriots apparently still have lady luck on their side. Luck can only get you so far in the NFL, however, and if the Rams could play any offense with consistency they would probably get the win.
The Rams offense ultimately will decide the game. Jeff Fisher has the team going in the right direction, but does need to get his offense to a point that matches more of the explosive passing offenses in the NFL today. Despite the offenses struggles, the team is still 3-4 led by an amazing defense that loves to get after the quarterback and create turnover. Sunday will show if the Rams have enough offense or if the Rams offense can show up.
Steelers will play the Redskins Sunday at 1PM
Heinz Field in Pittsburgh will host one of the more intriguing matchups of the season as the 3-3 Pittsburgh Steelers will face the 3-4 Redskins this Sunday at 1 PM ET. Both teams have shown hints of greatness, but both have also lost winnable games to this point. Last week the Steelers got a victory on Sunday night against the Bengals. The Redskins, on the other hand, lost a tough one to the Giants even after taking a lead with just minutes left in the fourth.
Pittsburgh continues to try and scratch their way out of the AFC North’s basement as they are trying to catch the Ravens at the top. They just squeaked by the Bengals 24-17 last week, but could have easily lost the game. They have been ravished by injuries to their team in nearly every aspect from the running game to the offensive line to the Linebackers and defensive backs. The team is trying to get healthy and did get many players back last week. To really make a jump, however, the help of Troy Palomalu will be a key factor.
Washington has been competitive in every game this year, but is finding ways to lose games. Their defense has been one of the porous in the league and makes it hard for the team to win games despite all the success Robert Griffin III has had with the offense. Sunday will certainly show which of these teams is making the big jump this season. This game could certainly propel either team to further wins this year.
Cowboys and Giants meet again
The Dallas Cowboys will meet the New York Giants on Sunday for their second and final meeting of the year (barring a playoff meeting). The Giants were defeated by the Cowboys week one of the season, but have only lost once since. Meanwhile the Cowboys have only won 2 other times since that meeting. The Giants come into the game at 5-2 while the Cowboys are 3-3. The game will be played at Cowboys Stadium and is set to kickoff at 4:25 PM ET.
Last week the Cowboys were able to win a close game 19-14 against the Carolina Panthers in Carolina. The team was dominate defensively and continues to make positive strides on that side of the ball. Offensively, however, they have been up and down all season and you never know what Cowboys offense will show up. They seem to still be trying to find an identity, which is something that is taking too much time and will cost them if not fixed quickly. This week’s game would give them an awesome opportunity to get back into the division. A loss, on the other hand, could all but cripple any hope they have.
The defending Super Bowl champions sure will not make it easy for them and are sure to be angry after they lost opening day to the Cowboys. Since that time, they have gone 5-1 and are beating teams on both sides of the ball. They have pulled out tough games and have everything a team needs to repeat. Sunday’s divisional game will give everyone a good idea of where they are as a team in terms of having a real chance to repeat.

Manning on prime time again this Sunday
Peyton Manning will find himself in yet another primetime game this season on Sunday Night Football on NBC. He and his Denver Broncos will take on the Saints at Sports Authority Field at Mile High that night in what should be a fantastic matchup of future hall of fame quarterbacks. Denver enters the game at 3-3 while the Saints are 2-4 following back-to-back victories. Denver should come into the game healthy and refreshed after serving their bye week last Sunday.
Manning and the Broncos seem to be hitting their stride now and are putting things together after having very questionable starts. Their latest victory saw them fall behind 24-0 before finally scoring in the second half. They utilized both offense and defense to get wins and have the edge on the Saints thanks to their defense, which is something the Saints have not had to this point in the year. The Broncos must get better starts, however, and can not bank on coming back from 24 down in one half anymore this season.
The Saints are also finally figuring out who they are and are playing more like their old selves. They still have big strides to make defensively, but seem to have a good feel of the offense again. The quarterback matchup in this contest is one everyone should be aware of and watch closely as these two QBs go blow for blow Sunday night. The game will also be more than half the year in which the Broncos were on primetime. This begs to ask the question of fairness for the team that has had a very unnatural and untraditional schedule this season.
Caribbean Rum and Beer Festival
A relatively new tradition, the Caribbean Rum and Beer Festival has only been around for two years (this year being the third), but has already gained a reputation as being one of the best attractions for rum lovers who happen to be in the neighborhood. For the previous two years, the festival has been held in Barbados, though this year sees it moving to Grenada and a bigger venue to accommodate the growing crowds. It will be held at the Granada Cultural Centre, in the middle of the tourist area of Grand Anse.
The main drinking events consist of rum and beer tasting, rum judging contests to determine the best of the best and blind tasting contests. The best rums from both local and international producers come to take part in the event and prove their worth. In addition, beer was added to the program to showcase the newer growing tradition of brewing in the Caribbean.
In addition to all the drinking, there are other events to keep visitors occupied. Many of the best in the industry, both blenders and brewers, come to give talks about their craft. There are fun events such as the Beer Pong Challenge and Rum Cocktail Wars. A food court offers up some of the best regional food, both Grenadian and Creole. There is also a crafts and gifts market for those looking to purchase a few souvenirs.
A visit to the Caribbean Rum and Beer Festival offers people a chance to try some of the world’s greatest rums and beers, some of which are local only and virtually impossible to find outside of the islands. And all this entertainment is set among the beautiful scenery that has become synonymous with a luxury vacation.
This year’s event takes place on November 2nd and 3rd and costs about $25 for a ticket. The festival is a supporter of charity as well, so much of the money you spend will be going to a good cause - this year the Queen Elizabeth Home for children. If you’re a lover of rum and beer, do yourself a favor and try to get out to take part in this festival.
Jets will host the Dolphins this Sunday
The Jets will take their 3-4 record into their game against the 3-3 Miami Dolphins this week. The game will be played at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in New York. The Jets have played much better in recent weeks despite a huge loss of their best player Darrel Revis weeks ago. They have made some strides on offense and defense, but have still fallen short. This was most evident last week after they fell to the Patriots 29-26 despite having a perfect scenario land in their laps to grab a win.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, have surprised many with their .500 record behind a rookie quarterback and nameless receivers. They are coming off a bye week and should be rested for the Jest as they try and keep fighting for the lead in a very tight division.
New York is in desperate need of a win after last week’s debacle, and has a perfect opportunity at home against a team they should beat. The Jets got a gift last week late in their game, but found a way to spoil it with undisciplined defense. The Jets tied the game up late in their contest with the Patriots and kicked off to the Patriots who fumbled the ball to give the Jets perfect field position to win the game. The Jets did end up getting a field goal to go up 3 points, but did not get enough time off the clock and left too much time for Tom Brady. Brady drove his team down the field in a minute and tied things up to go into overtime. There the Jets were shutout and New England drove again for a field goal.
Bears will try to stay on top of the NFC North
The 5-1 Chicago Bears will take on the 1-5 Carolina Panthers this Sunday. The game will take place at Soldier Field in Chicago as the Bears try to stay atop the NFC North Division. The two teams are set to meet with a 1 PM ET kickoff on FOX. Chicago comes into the game with the momentum as they continue to play well on both sides of the ball. The Panthers are meanwhile folding, and have been visibly rattled by their poor play.
Chicago is coming off a 13-7 win against the Lions Monday night. They did not flash brilliance on offense, but did do a terrific job defensively against a strong Lions offense. Jay Cutler stayed in the game despite a big hit he took from Lions defensive tackle Suh. Many probably thought the frail and erratic acting quarterback would sit out the game, but he showed some advancement in his leadership by returning to the game.
Carolina, on the other hand, saw their leader falling apart after their week 7 loss to the Cowboys. They lost that game 19-14 and after the game Cam described a team that he could not understand but that had to change quickly. Some thought it sounded like Newton was calling out the offensive coordinator during his press conference as he kept talking about the play calling. Clearly, the two quarterbacks are going in opposite directions. However, it still seems like the Panthers always have a fighting chance with the dynamic Newton at the helm. Sunday we will find out how bad the Bears want it.
