The Carnival of Basel is an event in northern Switzerland that mimics Mardi Gras in a number of ways, but doesn’t take place until the Monday after Ash Wednesday, as opposed to the weekend before. It lasts for three days and during that time features masks, costumes, parades and processions, but with a socio-political bent.
