Grasping a yellow oil pastel to help me finish my sunflower project in my journal, my nearly seven-year-old started ripping off the paper around the medium. I gasped, ready to chastise her; she did this to all of our crayons, too! Why was she always destroying my art supplies?
We don’t buy kiddie supplies in our house, you see. While we do have them—people are always giving them to us—I splurge on “real” ones whenever I can because I want her to learn to use them properly. And she just gave ME a lesson on how to use them properly—to wreck them.
How on earth are you supposed to continue using a crayon or pastel when the paper is in the way, after all? How can you shade correctly—or do a rubbing, if that’s what you want to create—without losing the paper holder?
