College Stats & Stuff for the SEC (Week Nine)

Now it's Georgia's turn ... Tide-Tiger showdown set once again ... etc.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE [Scores] [Standings]

Best Wins:

  • Just when Florida looked like it had taken command of the East with wins over LSU and South Carolina, here comes Georgia putting itself in the driver's seat with a 17-9 victory over the Gators.
  • Alabama just keeps rolling, getting a convincing 38-7 win over previously undefeated Mississippi State.
  • Missouri finally broke through the SEC ice, with a win over 1-8 Kentucky.

Stats Smorgasbord:

  • Georgia forced six turnovers in its huge win over Florida.
  • The Bulldogs are second in the conference in total offense, behind Texas A&M.
  • The Aggies are No. 5 in the nation in that category, behind dazzling freshman Johnny Manziel.  Manziel is No. 30 in the nation in rushing, with 99.1 yards per game, and is No. 29 in the nation in passing efficiency with a 64.3 completion percentage and 16 TDs.
  • A.J. McCarron is No. 1 in the nation now in passing efficiency, with a 68.9 completion percentage and, still, zero INT.  McCarron is finally getting his Heisman buzz, though he's far behind new Heisman darling Collin Klein of Kansas State.
  • The Tide is still getting plenty of boost from its defense, which is No. 1 nationally in total defense, allowing just 203.1 yards per game.
  • The Tide stuffed Mississippi State  for just 47 yards rushing.
  • And they are also No. 2 in the nation in turnover margin, with a massive +17 (23 takeaways, just 6 giveaways).

Football Factoids:

  • ESPN Heisman Watch:  3-T.  McCarron;  7. Manziel.
  • SEC in the AP poll:  1. Alabama;  5. LSU;  7. Georgia; 8. Florida;  11.  South Carolina; 16. Texas A&M; 17. Mississipi State.
  • SEC in the BCS standings: 1. Alabama;  5. LSU;  6. Georgia; 7. Florida;  8.  South Carolina; 15. Mississipi State; 16. Texas A&M.
  • The big showdown again:  Alabama-LSU.  They played twice last year, with the Tigers winning in the regular season, and the Tide taking the BCS title game.  The shine is off this one a bit after LSU's loss to Florida, but the Tigers obviously will be out for revenge.
  • Georgia does not have to play Alabama or LSU, so the Bulldogs can cruise home with wins over Ole Miss and hapless Auburn.  Despite an ugly 35-7 loss to South Carolina, the Dawgs look like good bets to make the SEC title game.
  • And, speaking of Auburn, Gene Chizek won a national title with Cam Newton, but he's already on the hot seat with a 1-7 record and a series of ugly SEC losses, including to Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.  The only win was in overtime over Louisiana-Monroe.  They face fellow 1-7 New Mexico State this weekend, so they ought to get back in the win column at least.
  • Manziel looks to be a Heisman contender for as long as he stays in college.  The Aggies face off with Mississippi State for the third spot in the SEC West this weekend, and then play the Tide.  If Manziel can lead an upset over 'Bama, he might win the Heisman as a freshman (if Klein were to falter somewhere).

College Stats & Stuff for the Pac-12 (Week Nine)

Big wins for Arizona, UCLA put them back in the rankings ... Oregon has showdown with USC ... etc.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE [Scores] [Standings]

Best Wins:

  • For the second week in a row, Arizona got a big win after starting conference play 0-3.  The Wildcats stormed past USC, 39-36.
  • And UCLA put themselves back in the conversation with a 45-43 win over Arizona State.  The Bruins started confernce play 1-2.
  • Finally, what can you say about Washington?  The Huskies upended highly ranked Stanford, the promptly lost three in a row.  Then they come back and hand Oregon State its first loss.
  • And, in a Week 10 preview, the Huskies also defeated Cal, 21-13, on Friday to go to 3-3 in the conference.

Stats Smorgasbord:

  • The huge stats mostly belong to they guys on the losing side of the Arizona-USC game.
  • And it was Marquise Lee of the Trojans with the shiniest numbers:  16 receptions for 345 yards and 2 TDs.
  • Lee also had 123 yards in kickoff returns.
  • Lee leads the conference in receiving yards and receptions per game.
  • And Matt Barkley was 31-of-49 for 493 yards and 3 TDs, but 2 INT, in the loss.
  • UCLA's Jonathan Franklin continues to lead the conference in rushing after his sixth game over 100, a 164-yard effort against Arizona State.  Franklin is No. 7 nationally.

Football Factoids:

  • ESPN Heisman Watch: 3-T. Kenjon Barner, RB, Oregon; 9. Oregon all-purpose player DeAnthony Thomas.  Franklin has more yards than Barner, but doesn't show up.
  • Pac-12 in the AP poll: 2. Oregon; 13. Oregon State; 15. Stanford; 18. USC; 24. Arizona; 25. UCLA.
  • Pac-12 in the BCS standings: 4. Oregon; 11. Oregon State; 14. Stanford; 17. USC; 22. Arizona.
  • After two losses, USC has lost some of its shine, but the Trojans can reclaim some glory this week when they face Oregon.
  • The Ducks appear to need some help to make the BCS title game, as they have now slipped behind both Kansas State and Notre Dame.  Interestingly, some of that help might come from USC, who will play the Irish on Nov. 24.
  • Oregon State's loss to Washington eliminates the chance for a battle of unbeatens in the Civil War game on that same Nov. 24.  The Beavers will try to get back on track with a game against Arizona State.
  • Both Arizona and UCLA returned to the AP rankings with their big wins, but this week they face each other, so one of them will probably have a short-lived appearance.

College Stats & Stuff for the Big XII (Week Nine)

K-State still the team to beat ... Oklahoma State next to try ... Cyclones stay afloat ... etc.

BIG XII CONFERENCE [Scores] [Standings]

Best Wins:

  • Kansas State seems to have the big win every week now.  This time it was a 55-24 pasting of Texas Tech.  The BCS beckons.
  • Iowa State asserted itself a bit with a 35-21 win over struggling Baylor.
  • And Oklahoma State got back in the conversation with a 36-14 triumph over TCU.

Stats Smorgasbord:

  • Oh sure, here comes Collin Klein again.  He was 19-of-26 for 233 yards and 2 TDs against Texas Tech, plus 83 yards rushing.  He's first in the conference and No. 2 in the nation in passing efficiency and fourth in the conference in rushing.
  • Klein has just two interceptions, and averages 9.9 yards per attempt.  He didn't just pass Geno Smith of West Virginia on the field, he's passed him in the stats as well.
  • OK, except for Smith having 26 TD passes.
  • But not even Smith can match Seth Doege in the TD category.  Doege has 30.  But with 8 INT, Doege only ranks fourth in the conference in passing efficiency.  The Big XII has five of the top 11 in the nation in that category, with Nick Florence of Baylor sneaking in at No. 6 nationally.

Football Factoids:

  • ESPN Heisman Watch: 1. Klein; 8. Smith (down from No. 6 last week).  Doege dropped off after Tech's loss.
  • Big XII in the AP poll: 3. Kansas State; 14. Oklahoma; 20. Texas Tech; 23. West Virginia
  • Big XII in the BCS standings: 2. Kansas State; 12. Oklahoma; 18. Texas Tech; 21. West Virginia; 23. Texas; 24. Oklahoma State.  The Sooners drop after a humbling 30-14 loss to Notre Dame.
  • Oklahoma State is next up for the red-hot K-Staters.  The Cowboys have three straight wins and have crept back into the national rankings.  Their losses were to Arizona and Texas.
  • West Virginia will try to get its season back on track with a home game against fellow conference newcomer TCU.  The Mountaineers started 5-0 before a pair of ugly losses and a bye week.
  • And, with conference defector Texas A&M now the highest ranked team from that state, Texas and Texas Tech will fight for what bragging rights are left.

College Stats & Stuff for the Big Ten (Week Nine)

Nebraska makes a move ... and Indiana, too? ... Buckeyes win the "Ineligi-Bowl" ... etc.

BIG TEN CONFERENCE [Scores] [Standings]

Best Wins:

  • Yes, it was the "Ineligi-Bowl" between sanctioned Ohio State and Penn State.  As expected, the Buckeyes prevailed, 35-23.
  • Among games the affect the Big Ten championship, Nebraska made a huge stride toward winning the Leaders Division with a 23-9 win over Michigan.
  • And Michigan State scrambled up the Legends Division  by knocking off Wisconsin  in overtime, 16-13.  The Badgers had become the favorites to advance to the title game.
  • But now, beleive it or not, Indiana  controls its own destiny, after a 31-17 win over Illinois, and can make the title game by winning out.  Hypothetically, anyway.

Stats Smorgasbord:

  • Nebraska has been among the leaders in the offensive categories all year, but in the Michigan game the defense stepped up.  The Huskers are now fifth in the conference in total defense at 336.4 yards per game, and No. 26 nationally.
  • The Cornhuskers continue to rank near the bottom in turnover margin, with 14 lost fumbles rating among the nation's worst.
  • Venric Mark of Northwestern continues to ... well ... make his mark.  The Wildcats' star gained 162 yards against Iowa and moved into second place on the conference rushing chart.  Denard Robinson of Michigan left his game early and gained only 46 yards, creating an opening for Mark.
  • But, it is still Braxton Miller of Ohio State lighting up most of the charts, with 121.4 yards per game and 12 TDs rushing and 7.7 yards per attempt and 12 TDs passing.

Football Factoids:

  • ESPN Heisman Watch: 5.  Miller.  With no title game, is doesn't look like Miller will have a chance to move much higher.
  • Big Ten in the AP poll: 6. Ohio State; 21. Nebraska.  Huskers return to the poll after a few weeks out.
  • Big Ten in the BSC standings:  Ohio State is ineligible, but Nebraska is No. 20.  Michigan and Wisconsin fall out.
  • Nebraska now looks like the Rose Bowl favorite after its convincing win over Michigan and its defense beginning to take a step forward.  The Huskers must get by Michigan State in East Lansing, but then will be strong favorites in their remaining games.
  • In its first year in the Big Ten, Nebraska lost badly to Robinson but caught a break when Miller got hurt in their game against the Buckeyes.  This year, the Huskers lost badly to Miller, and caught a break when Robinson got hurt.  But the Wolverines didn't appear to be on the way to victory with Robinson, either.
  • OK, Indiana has indeed now joined Wisconsin as the only eligible Legends Division team with a conference victory.  If the Hoosiers beat Iowa this weekend, then they will indeed face the Badgers with a chance to go 3-3 in the league, and leave Wisconsin with three losses as well, and control the tiebreaker.  Sounds more like Hoosiers the movie, but its not impossible.

College Stats & Stuff for the ACC + Notre Dame (Week Nine)

Tar Heels conquer Wolfpack with big late rally ... Domers appear set for BCS ... etc.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE [Scores] [Standings]

Best Wins:

  • Future ACCer Notre Dame went to 8-0 and pretty much wrapped up a BCS bid with a 30-13 triumph over Oklahoma.
  • North Carolina is now 6-3 and 3-2 in the conference after overcoming neighbor N.C. State, 43-35, with 18 points in the 4th quarter.
  • Boston College emerged from the depths to defeat Maryland, which had been starting to make some noise.
  • And Florida State delivered a serious reality check to Duke, 48-7.

Stats Smorgasbord:

  • It's Giovani Bernard of North Carolina who's starting to get national attention after four consecutive 100-yard games.  Bernard had 135 against N.C. State in Week 9.  His streak started with a 262-yard game against Virginia Tech.  Bernard is now No. 3 in the nation in yards per game, and is averaging 7.4 yards per attempt.
  • Bernard is the only ACC player averaging over 100 yards per game.
  • E.J. Manuel of Florida State continues to put up good stats, although the narrow loss to N.C. State seems to have killed off whatever Heisman buzz he had.  Manuel is completing 70.0 percent of his attempts, has 16 TDs and just 4 INT.  That puts him No. 3 in the nation in passing efficiency.  He also leads the conference with 10.1 yards per attempt.
  • Tajh Boyd of Clemson joins him in the top 10 in that category, at No. 10.  Boyd is completing 67.7 percent of his throws, and has 20 TDs and 6 INT.
  • The Tigers are No. 13 in the nation in turnover margin at +8 in eight games (16 takeaways, 8 giveaways).  Hapless Virginia is among the nation's worst at -16.  The Cavaliers have three fumble recoveries and just a single interception.  Pretty sad for the alma mater of NFL great Ronde Barber.

Football Factoids:

  • ESPN Heisman Watch:  [2. Notre Dame LB Manti Te'o]; 10-T. Bernard.  It's the first appearance in the Heisman buzz for Bernard.
  • ACC in the AP poll: [4. Notre Dame]; 9. Florida State; 10. Clemson.
  • ACC in the BCS rankings: [3. Notre Dame]; 9. Florida State; 13. Clemson.
  • Te'o had 11 tackles and a sack in the win over Oklahoma.
  • Florida State regained control of the Atlantic Division with N.C. State's loss to North Carolina.  The Seminoles hold the tiebreaker over Clemson.  Their toughest remaining game is against non-conference foe Florida.
  • The Tar Heels are 6-1 in games in which Bernard appears, but the one loss was one that really hurts ... it was to archrival Duke.
  • The Blue Devils, meanwhile, were 6-2 and starting to get a head of steam when they ran into the Seminoles and got stopped cold.  They have another tough matchup this weekend against Clemson.

Tony Adams Dept.

Maybe Hisashi Iwakuma can get the Mr. Arsenal title

.

1.  How badly did the Mariners lowball the dude?  Well, in their defense, Iwakuma is fragile.  And they had many other (attractive!) options for the period 2013-15.  Had Iwakuma chosen to move on, the Mariners would legitimately have shrugged and given the job to somebody else.

It's tough to ask for a raise if the fact is that other people can do it better and cheaper.  Rich Dad said, the days of claiming we "deserve" a raise are over.  That's going a bit far, but one day, eBay (the paradigm not the company) will rule the planet -- if you need a carburetor, you'll be able to ask 8 billion people for the cheapest one.  Frictionless sales mean that, increasingly, you are going to get paid more and more precisely what you are worth.

Right now Cindy and I have added Saturn Barter to our eBay 'lifestyle', as it were.  Our other writing jobs are paid (handsomely) through a giant barter collective.  My own services are advertised and we purchase services with barter credits.  That's where we're headed:  put your goods and services up into the cloud and start swapping so fast we can't see our hands moving.

Gotta stop axing for grace and favor and be worth something.  /capitalist moment

Iwakuma was in an odd situation:  he wanted to be here, but couldn't shop his services unless he took the nuclear option to Seattle.  Who'da thunk the club-only period would be such a bludgeon in Zduriencik's hands.

.

2.  What did Iwakuma deserve?  There's no correct answer, because there's no data on Iwakuma's 2013-14 performance.  But here is what I look at:  the two guys above and below him, for 2012 xFIP, were Darvish and Kuroda.

  • HI:  Darvish $23M in production last year (same exact xFIP as Iwakuma's in the rotation)
  • MID:  Kuroda $16M, $10M, and $18M in production the last three years
  • LO:  Vargas $10M, $10M, and $3M in production the last three years

We throw Vargas in there as a reality check, a LOWER bound.

Darvish is a very realistic UPPER bound - here's a crosscheck.  Doug Fister is a very similar pitcher to Hisashi Iwakuma, both sabermetrically and stylistically.  Doogie earned $25M and $16M the last two years.  There you go:  the $20-25M range is the UP scenario for Hisashi Iwakuma, it says here.  Maybe a 25% chance of earning that.

Hiroki Kuroda last year fanned 6.8 men, walked 2.1, and gave up 1.0 homers, with a lifetime grounder rate a bit worse than Iwakuma's.  Over 220 innings, that was 3.9 WAR and $18M in salary earned (WAR uses a lot of theoretical outcome in its output).

...............

Certainly Iwakuma is less of a workhorse than Kuroda.  But on the other hand, we're looking at very possible inflation in 2013-15.  I think it's fair to say that the Mariners gave Iwakuma right at 50c on the dollar.  It will be 30c on the dollar if Iwakuma has a good year.

Two years, plus a club option with a piddling $500,000 buyout -- isn't that absolutely the ideal club length of term for a veteran pitcher?

Tony Adams, Mr. Arsenal, once said "I will sign every contract Arsenal puts in front of me without reading it."  Says here that Iwakuma REALLY wanted to play in Seattle.  Glad to have you, sir.

.

We've Outgrown You, Dept.

And Doug Fister fades back into Dr. D's emotional rear view mirror

.

1.  Iwakuma is now IN THE ROTATION for the next 60-90 starts.  They're not paying him $6M to relieve.  Yeah baby!

.

2.  I think we all agree that Erasmo has shown enough.

I dunno, did SSI's forty articles on Hisashi Iwakuma have any influence over his being here?  Iwakuma's fine pitching had the real influence.  But did our campaign headquarters affect the conversation?

If so, same deal on Erasmo.  He is this close ::thumb and finger an inch apart:: from being an SSI Best Bet.  Not to put too fine a point on it, but Erasmo had four starts in June and five in September; despite that, the public conversation is now that Erasmo is a given for 2013.  SSI, we modestly claim, was able to demonstrate that Erasmo's (1) template and (2) execution are exceptionally safe bets.

Needless to say, Erasmo's ability is The Truth here.  But it's verrrrry cool to see Iwakuma and Erasmo becoming ossified in their roles at the head of the rotation line.  IMHO that is what was best for the Mariners, and that's what they're doing.

... obviously this isn't to imply that Jack Zduriencik is anything other than a grandmaster of baseball scouting or that his confidence in his own judgment is less than total.  But the conversation outside, around, and at low levels inside the club is subject to influence.  And if the information is accurate, what's wrong with that?

..............

Emotionally speaking, 2 Iwakuma and 3 Erasmo have (for me) now put Doug Fister in the rear view mirror

.

3.  Numbers 1 and 2 mean that Jason Vargas has got to go.  ... could be that you can afford to wait until the All-Star break.  Maybe.  At the latest.

There is an epidemic lack of faith in the Big Three, brought on apparently by the fact that they didn't go through the minors like Jered Weaver.  The sentiment of the moment is that we'll be lucky to get production out of one of them...

To which we can meekly offer GET A GRIP YOU FEEBLEMINDED MOOKS!  If you were talking about three Victor Sanchezes, teenagers who are in the Top 100, then sure.  You could say "only one or two will make it."  But if you didn't plan on using Danny Hultzen, you blinkin' well shouldn't have spent that #2 overall on him.

James Paxton is not some class A+ pitcher you hope will be good some day.  You are talking about two guys who, the moment they fire a few great games in spring training, the moment they look like they've solved it, are in there.

Taijuan Walker is on much more of a Felix timeline than a Lucas Luetge timeline; he is liable to be ready to get his feet wet this September.  In July 2011, you might have said the ROI is 1.0 good pitchers out of those three.  Now it's more like 2.0 -- and that's midrange.  The UP scenario is Hudson, Zito and Mulder.

It's fine to say that you can't plan on all three of them becoming stars.  True enough.  But neither can you afford to make plans that freeze any of them out!  Whatever your "plans" on their stardom, in any case you DO have to plan on placing all three (3) of these young gentlemen into your major league rotation, my friend.  Supposing that in 1999, right before Hudson, Zito and Mulder got there, Billy Beane had locked up his rotation with several Jason Vargases?

*Even if you trade Paxton, you've still got 2.000 rotation slots you've got to keep cleared for Hultzen and Taijuan - and you've got the entire rest of the organization (Maurer, Capps, Sanchez etc etc) pressing up against the chainlink fence like a mob at a Who concert.

.......................

Did you guys SEE Jason's body language on TV when they asked him about the fences?!  :- )  If there had been any doubt, that fence thingy casts the 101st Senate vote here, Mr. Speaker.

Hey.  He's young, rich, and famous.  He'll land on his feet, we're guessing.

..................

4.   It's remarkable that the Mariners walked down the aisle with Hisashi Iwakuma, considering all of the above.  Quite a compliment for HIM.  And their Big Three (Four) put them in the position of strength from which they negotiated the sweetheart deal.  Success breeds success.

....................

5.  The Mariners could still move on Dan Haren, theoretically.  What the Mariners could do for ONE year is not quite crushed by the imperative to eventually clear space for the Big Three.  And if Haren became a 5-6 WAR guy again, well, you figure something out.  But now we're off into la-la land.  Point is, if the Mariners can easily fit $15M for 2013, Dr. D would /cosign a Haren maneuver.  Fo sho.

.

=== Bumper Sticker, Dept. ===

Iwakuma is in, and Erasmo is good, and Jason Vargas is therefore out.   That's me, anyway.
