'Wreck-It Ralph' takes the top spot at the weekend box office

Disney film is an instant classic.

Many had predicted that Disney's Wreck-It Ralph would do very well in it's debut weekend, but I'm not sure anyone realized just how well the animated feature would do. Not only did Wreck-It Ralph win the top spot at the box office over the weekend, it shattered Disney's own records.

We had the pleasure of seeing Wreck-It Ralph, and I can tell you, this movie is a sheer delight! It's so much fun, so retro and for any of us who grew up playing those classic 1980s video games, it's a trip down memory lane, too. See this one folks, it's fantastic! To say that Wreck-It Ralph went over big with movie goers is a huge understatement. All total, the film took in $49.1 million over the weekend. This makes Wreck-It Ralph Disney's biggest animated movie opening in history (beating out 2010's Tangled, which took in $48.8 million in Thanksgiving holiday weekend opening). That's simply incredible, and, in my opinion, deserved. Wreck-It Ralph was such a pleasant surprise for me, as I really had no expectations when we went to see it. I figured it was just another (well done) Disney animated film. I was wrong!

Enough raves from me for Wreck-It Ralph -- hopefully all of you take my advice and see this movie soon. As for the rest of the weekend box office, the number two spot belonged to the Robert Zemeckis drama Flight, starring Denzel Washington in what some say is an Oscar-worthy lead actor performance. Flight took in $25 million and yes, it is next on my list of must-see films. Hopefully I can catch it this week.

The films rounding out the top five are: Argo, with $10.2 million, The Man With the Iron Fists (new this week) with $8.2 million and Taken 2, which grossed another $6 million over the weekend.

Did you see any movies in the theater over the weekend? What did you see and, most importantly, can you recommend the film for the rest of us?

Heading to New Orleans this weekend? Check out the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival

Nothing makes life better like a bowl of perfect gumbo and great NOLA music.

When people find out I've got close ties to New Orleans, I am almost always asked if I can cook. Specifically, those who consider themselves amateur chefs ask if I can make a good roux and/or a great gumbo. Yes, I can, but it took years of practice. I much prefer to leave the heavy cooking to others.

If you're a gumbo lover, head to NOLA this coming weekend, because the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival is happening, and it's amazing!Treme is probably my favorite neighborhood in New Orleans. It's the heart of the city to me, the place that turns out some of the greatest musicians the world has ever known -- and some of the most extraordinary food. With that in mind, each year, Treme holds the Creole Gumbo Festival. It's a chance for longtime NOLA residents and visitors alike to sample some of the best gumbo around. Don't miss this chance.

This year's Treme Creole Gumbo Festival is Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11, 2012. Guess what attending this festival will cost you? Nothing. Admission is free! The festivities are held each year at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park, the heart of Treme. If you're staying in the French Quarter, it's easy to get to the Park -- it's right across from Rampart Street. Ask any native for directions and they'll gladly help you out.

While gumbo is certainly the center of the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival (duh), there's much more going on. Most notably? Music, and a lot of it. Several local Treme-based musicians contribute their considerable talents each year, and this year, they include such iconic New Orleans bands as the Hot 8 Brass Band, the Soul Rebels Brass Band and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Those three bands alone are worth attending the Festival, trust me.

For more information on the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival, you can visit The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation's official website. Enjoy!

Help, my kitty has bad breath

What to do if kitty has bad breath

You love having kitty close to you. You love snuggling around her. You may even like having her lie next to you in bed. But suddenly you realize that kitty’s breath has begun to smell strange. No, kitty never did have minty fresh breath. But now kitty actually has bad breath.  What could be causing it and what should you do?

Kitty could have what is known as halitosis. Halitosis occurs when kitty has bad breath or a strong, fetid type odor coming from her mouth. What causes this halitosis?

Halitosis or bad kitty breath can be caused from something as normal as a buildup of bacteria in kitty’s mouth. Yes, kitty can get bacteria and germs in her mouth, just as humans can.  These bacteria can even cause dental and gum problems, as well as diseases. For this reason, you can begin by trying to look inside kitty’s mouth. If she doesn’t allow this, try to sneak a peek while she is yawning or playing.  Look for brown or yellowing on her teeth. You should also look to see if her gums look red. Of course, your vet can examine her teeth better. This means you may want to take kitty in for a visit.

If the vet rules out a dental problem, she may wonder if kitty is suffering from some heath issues. These health issues can include diabetes. Another sign of diabetes is that kitty’s breath may smell sweeter and fruity and actually bad. You may also notice that she has been drinking and urinating more than usual.

Another health issue is kidney disease. An indicator of this is that kitty’s bad breath may have a urine type smell to it.

How will your vet treat the bad breath? The treatment will vary, depending on the root cause. If a disease is found, it will be treated. If a dental problem is found, it should be addressed the best way possible. This can include adding hard food to your cat’s diet to help fight plague.

New features with the latest Sims 3 update

1.42 brings greeting cards, attraction system and blueprint mode

Right before the release of a new expansion pack, EA will frequently push out a Sims 3 update that includes a lot of interesting functionality even for those who don't buy the expansion. (I'm holding off on Seasons until December, myself.)

In the case of update 1.42, there are several interesting bits:

Greeting Cards
Several sites around town (so far I have only done this at City Hall) now allow you to snap a greeting card. Click on the site and select "Take greeting card picture with…" then select any members of your household you want to join you. Everyone will go down to the site, into the rabbit hole, and then the game will take a posed shot with them in front of something distinctive to the site.

You can upload the image to your Player Wall (if anyone is even still bothering with this Facebook-like timeline). You can also snag a copy for yourself by logging into TheSims3.com and going to My Studio.

Attraction System
It seems like this system will work in the way that Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs used to in The Sims 2. Now when your Sim introduces themselves to a new Sim, occasionally you will get a little chime and a sprinkle of hearts around their heads. This indicates that there is an attraction there. If you choose to follow up on it with Romantic interactions, they will be unusually successful.

This may make it a little easier for your Sim to find a mate. Not that this was a big problem in the past, but it's nice to have the game help stack the deck for you from time to time.

Blueprint Mode
This will make it a lot easier and faster to put together a house (or add on an addition) for those of us with limited patience for fussing with Build Mode. Click the Blueprint tool, which looks like a pair of pliers (I think it's supposed to be a compass?) then select the room that you want to place. Click on your plot, and the room will be built in a flash: fully furnished, and complete with windows, doors, siding, wallpaper, and flooring.

If you want to build an entire house with Blueprint Mode, it is possible. Although this player describes the process as being like "a jigsaw puzzle without an actual solution." If you want an entire house, you are probably still better off pulling one out of the bin or downloading it from the Exchange. But if you just want one or two rooms, Blueprint Mode promises to save a lot of time.

Free Concentrate 128 cleaning solution

Safe for sufaces not harmed by water

If you are looking for a cleaner that is Green-Seal certified, then you will want to try Concentrate 128. Concentrate 128 is biodegradable, yet powerful enough to be used throughout your home as an excellent cleaning solution.

One of the benefits of Concentrate 128 is that it saves you a boatload of money. It comes in concentrated form, so you dilute it with water at home. That means the product will go far and there will be long spurts of time in between purchases. According to their website, the cost is as little as $.05 per quart.Concentrate 128 is a hydrogen peroxide solution that also contains orange oil. You can use it to clean glass, degrease your stove, wash your carpets, deodorize your bathrooms and wash your linoleum floors. You can use this product on any surface that is not harmed by water.

Mixing Concentrate 128 is easy. If you have a 32 oz. spray bottle, you need ¼ ounce of concentrate for light house cleaning and 2 oz. for heavy house cleaning. Simply multiply these figures if you need to make a bucketful of cleaner for floors or large areas.

Head to Concentrate 128's free sample request form to try the product for free. Fill in your name, full mailing address, country, and e-mail address. Then click the yellow “Submit” button. If your submission was successful, you'll see a “Thank You” pop up. It doesn't indicate how long it will take you to receive the sample, but in my experience it is usually between 4 and 8 weeks.

Play Deal or No Deal for free

Win tokens and prizes

One of my favorite game shows is Deal or No Deal. I was so excited when they turned that game show into an arcade game at my local arcade, and now I am even more excited that they have it online for free. You can even win prizes when you play totally for free. Here is how it works:

Sign up for free at GSN, which is owned by DIRECTV and Sony Pictures Entertainment, to play Deal or No Deal. You'll need to fill out your email address and choose a username and password. Click the green “Register Now” button when you're all done.
That's all you have to do to begin playing. You can play for tokens or for cash. When you choose the cash option, you only get one free game. If you choose to play for tokens, you are started off with a large number of tokens. Each game costs 100 tokens to play.

Then you can win or lose tokens based on your game. If you go to the Prize Center, you can see where you can win prizes for playing the game. Some of the prizes you can win include an Amazon.com gift card, more tokens, a light and ion therapy lamp, something for your pet, a Kindle Fire, coupons, a Target gift card and a whoopie cushion. You can also enter several different sweepstakes.

If you have some downtime this week, you may want to check Deal or No Deal out. It's fun and free so you have nothing to lose. I just played my first game for tokens and I had a blast.

Free NeilMed Neti Pot

Get a free neti pot and two sinus rinse packets just by asking.

I have had problems with my sinuses ever since I broke my nose 14 years ago. One thing that really helps is to use a neti pot and keep the sinus cavities cleaned out. This is a great tool for allergy sufferers as well. Right now Neilmed Nasaflo Neti Pot is giving away one free neti pot and two sinus packets to everyone who becomes their Facebook fan. You can only request one free neti pot for each mailing address, and they are very strict about this rule so don't try to cheat them.

Head to the Neilmed Nasaflo Neti Pot Facebook page and click the “Like” button. Next, you'll need to either pick the “Click here if you are a user of Neilmed Nasaflo Neti Pot” or the “Click here if you use other saline rinse” button.

Now you need to fill out the information boxes. They request your full name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number (without dashes), country, and physician information. If you don't have a physician, or you just don't want to share his information, simply type “NA” in the boxes. When you are all done, click “Continue.”

There is a 15-question survey that you will be required to fill out next. It only took me a minute to complete. At the end of the page is an image you must copy to make sure you are not a robot. Click the “Submit” button after you have typed in the same letters or numbers that are in the image box.

The final step is watching a two minute and 46 second video. It shows you exactly how the neti pot works. When you click “Done” after the video is over, you will be informed that your neti pot with two sinus packets will be on their way within 30 days.

Santa handprint craft

Get kids in the mood for Christmas

Christmas is quickly approaching. I'm almost completely done with my Christmas shopping, so I've moved on to playing the Chipmunk's Christmas CD and having my kids make Christmas crafts. Our newest one is making a handprint Santa. If you have children under the age of 10, you'll want to give this craft a try.

You will need the following items to make your handprint Santa:

  • Construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush

Follow these directions to make your handprint Santa:

Step 1:
Place your child's hand on a piece of construction paper. Trace the hand with a pencil.

Step 2:
Cut the handprint out with a pair or child friendly scissors. Turn the handprint in front of your child so that the fingers are pointing downward.

Step 3:
Paint the top of the hand down into the thumb red. This is Santa's hat. Wait for the paint to dry before continuing.

Step 4:
Paint the center of the palm of the hand a beige color, or the color that is closest to your skin tone. This is Santa's face. Wait for the paint to dry before continuing.

Step 5:
Paint the bottom of the hand and the fingers white. This is Santa's beard. Next, paint the tip of the thumb white and the bottom strip of the hat white so that it looks just like a real Santa hat.

Step 6:
Paint two black dots on Santa's face so that he has eyes.

Step 7:
Wait for the paint to dry before using the Santa. You can put a magnet on the back so Santa can decorate the fridge, or you can use a hole punch at the top to thread yarn through the hole to use the Santa as an ornament for the Christmas tree. The possibilities are endless. You can even flip the Santa over and write on the back, turning the craft into a Christmas card.

Review: DiGiorno Pizza

It is just like delivery.

I've seen the commercial for DiGiorno pizza a million times before I decided to give it a try. I wanted to put their slogan “It's not delivery. It's DiGiorno” to the test. I have to say that this pizza is so good that it is now our pizza of choice.

If you like having pizza once a week like we do, or on occasion, DiGiorno is not only cheaper than take-out, but you can always buy it ahead of time so that you have it on hand when you get the urge to bite into a slice of pizza. We make it a habit to keep one box in the freezer at all times. Our favorite is the pepperoni, but it must be everyone else's favorite because they often run out of it at the grocery store. We also never pay full price for the pizza. Coupons abound for this product so it isn't hard to get a dollar off. Plus, the pizza goes on sale all the time for $6.99. That's $5.99 after the coupon. I don't know about you, but I can't get delivery in my neighborhood for anything less than $8.99, and even that is rare.

Here are the products that DiGiorno currently has for sale in the 12-inch rising crust pizza: Italian Sausage, Sausage and Pepperoni, Pepperoni, Three Meat, Four Cheese, Bacon Blitz, Buffalo Chicken, Supreme, Spicy Chicken Supreme and Spinach Mushroom and Garlic.

Thin crust pizza comes in Four Meat, Four Cheese, Pepperoni, and Supreme. You can also get a garlic bread pizza, half and half pizza, crispy flatbread pizza, cheese stuffed crust pizza, ultimate toppings pizza, pizza and breadsticks, pizza and wings, pizza and cookies, pizza dipping sticks, pizza and cinnamon sticks, Italian style favorites, deep dish and 200-calorie portions.
