Why we're mixing it up

It is our job to create a just world.

On October 30, schools around the country will be taking part in a simple yet revolutionary celebration called Mix It Up Day. This is a day during which students will be asked to move out of their comfort zones and sit with someone new at lunch to spark an interest and understanding across social boundaries.

In other words, it is a day desperately needed in times like these, when our own president encounters racial slurs, when so many teens would rather commit suicide than face the hurtful bullying and hate that they encounter every day just for being who they are.

The American Family Association has unfortunately attacked Teaching Tolerance, insisting that the intentions behind Mix It Up Day are not to promote understanding and tolerance, but to “promote a homosexual lifestyle” for elementary kids. They are even calling on parents to not send their kids to school during this day.
