In contrast to my last post, and inspired by one of my (two or three) readers, I’ve decided to do a tribute to the animals that don’t quite make the cut of being cute. Not all animals evolve to become adorable pets or curiosities that tourists chase around with cameras. Some are just downright ugly. Others frightening and potentially dangerous. Still others are the victims of genetic mishaps and fall off of the “cute” scale due to fate. Regardless of their origins, these critters get the short end of the stick and will never end up as 24/7 YouTube material.
Even when they do manage to make it online, it’s as a curiosity and little more. They don’t gather up the same number of hits as the adorable variety of beast, which could be seen as either blessing or curse. At least they get to remain somewhat anonymous, free from paparazzi chasing them down or determined owners trying to put them into ridiculous positions and take video for their own personal amusement or online contributions.
So here are some of the “losers” of the cuteness genetic race. Not all of them are creepy or ugly and some of them are even cute in their own right. Pretty much all of them, however, are rather unusual.
