Magic made me squeeze his Red Vines

This is a funny story.

I am such a big fan of Magic Johnson that simply reading this story makes me chuckle. I was ready to dismiss it, but the story was so funny that I felt it was only right to share it here on Magic Johnson talk. It is the case of a flight attended paid six figures to take care of Magic and his guests in his private jet complaining of being discriminated against.

In a hilarious turn of events, 45-year-old Lanita Thomas claims that Johnson forced her to "regularly squeeze his red vines to make sure they were soft."

In other news, Johnson tweeted that he would prefer Phil Jackson or Bryan Shaw to take over the helms after Coach Mike Brown was fired by Lakers management on Friday. He even threw in Pat Riley's name into the mix!

Phil Jackson is much loved in La-La Land and Magic along with current superstar Kobe Bryant had voiced their support for Jackson. But negotiations between Jackson and Lakers top brass broke down and the Lakers have opted to go with Mike D'Antoni.

Magic also voiced his support for the NBA to return to The Emerald City. And it is about time too! Plans have been laid for $490 million venue in downtown Seattle to house an NBA team. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Chris Hansen have been working hard to make this dream come true. NBA commissioner David Stern who will retire in February 2014 has passed the green light on the project.

The Mike Brown firing

Lakers have gone out and hired Mike D'Antoni after a dismal start.

After Mike Brown was terminated and Lakers fans cheered for the Zen master, it seemed almost automatic that Phil Jackson would take his familiar spot on the Laker bench. But this is not going to happen and the fault seems to lie roundly on Jackson's shoulders for making far too many demands. I guess Jackson is in the driver's seat having done all he needs to do in the NBA, but still is this not a sweet looking opportunity that even Jackson would have had a hard time passing up.

It has now becoming public news that the Lakers management have signed Mike D'Antoni to a four year deal more out of desperation than anything else. Don't get me wrong, D'Antoni did his bit with the Phoenix Suns and then the NY Knicks (Jeremy Lin shone in his trademark system). He has also had a marked influence on the Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant who has welcomed D'Antoni to guide the new look premier Los Angeles basketball team to a championship.

There has been a lot of mystery around the Jackson snub so to speak and analysts are pretty sure that Jackson must be kicking himself for believing that the Lakers top brass wouldn't call his bluff. Nonetheless, D'Antoni will now have a hard time living up to the Lakers fans expectations who wanted Jackson and are used to the success that he has brought the basketball team.

It will be interesting to see how D'Antoni steps up to the challenge after the Lakers have passed up the almighty Jackson for him. LA is in a spot of bother early in the season and this might be a great time to regroup albeit the recent resurgence by the team.

Apple getting ready for a good Christmas quarter

Apple has been tested as of late.

The Christmas season is here to redeem Apple (AAPL) which has the highest retail sales per square foot, beating out Tiffany & Co.

Trouble brewing with Samsung

Apple has been receiving stiff competition from Samsung and the Samsung executives are appealing the outcome of the Samsung Patent Trial. It appears that Samsung will not give in and will seemingly pursue other strategies to punish Apple.

But the fact of the matter is that Apple has not been forthcoming with Samsung the way it has been with Google. It might be because the Android fight with Google may not be worth the time and money like a tussle with Samsung that is really the big fish. It may also be a sign of the times with Tim Cook having different views to Steve Jobs.

What about that hot Apple stock?

Apple investors have been in for a turbulent ride these past few months. Yet, sophisticated traders would have loved the large appreciations and declines of the stock price. The current price of $536.88 is a far cry from the $1000 a share that bullish analysts were predicting. I guess it was the disappointing iPhone 5 sales (when comparing with Apple’s standards) that were responsible for the stock not surging remarkably.

Apple will continue to remain hot

Apple is always one step ahead of its contemporaries and is always looking forward and developing at a rapid pace. This is why the Cupertino, CA based firm does not hear the danger signs that are often painted by several observers.

Living a low-carb vegetarian lifestyle

Raw fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and whole grains are smart options.

Low-carb diets are all the rage. Ever since the meat-fest known as the Atkins diet was introduced, society seems to be on a carb-free kick.

Why, you ask?

Simply put, eating low-carb can help promote weight-loss, while reducing the risk for type 2 diabetes. Seems like a win-win situation to me. One problem, however - most low-carb diets are aimed toward extreme carnivores. These diets are filled with bacon grease and T-bones. Is it even possible for a vegetarian to eat low-carb?

Foods without carbohydrates are those that are high in protein and fat. Crazy that eating so much fat can help you lose weight, but the body processes it differently when carbs are missing. The majority of these foods are derived from animal flesh. As a vegetarian, I really want to see if I can drop a few pounds by eating less carbs, but it may be hard.

What can I eat?

It seems like most full-fat cheese, dairy products and avocados are safe. But I really don't want to live off avocado and cheese omelets for the rest of my life. Plus, I try to avoid large amounts of dairy products. (I dream of one day being able to go fully vegan.)

Veggies do have carbs, but since they are packed full of fiber, they don't hit your pancreas hard, like white sugar does. I need to select vegetables that are lower on the glycemic index, such as leafy greens. Potatoes (my personal favorite) and carrots (another household staple) should be avoided. Hmm...I always thought these foods were healthy.

Fruits have to be eaten in moderation on a low-carb diet. That's not going to work for me, since they are a staple in my cooking. I'm also going to have to limit pasta and bread. I can totally manage that, and I'll choose whole grain over Wonder Bread.

I really want to follow this type of diet plan, but I don't think I can do it without severely limiting my options. Instead of trying to follow the fad, I'm just going to stick with what I know - lots of whole fruits and vegetables, mixed with a moderate amount of grain. If you are a vegetarian that follows a low-carb lifestyle, I would love to hear what you eat on a daily basis.

Mobile tech

The battle of the mobile industry seems to have been won by the Android.

Apple's smart phone technology and iOS 6 may have been getting some pretty good press, but they do not have the superior technology of an Android smart phone. It appears that Google and more so Samsung have won the hard fought mobile war.

Blackberry may have around 70 million users and it still is harping its tune with the newly released Blackberry 10 operating system, but we in the mobile industry pretty much agree Blackberry is yesterday's news. Research in Motion will have to really innovate and move out of its poorly marketed exclusivity (a lot of the apps cannot be used in other devices; something Windows 8 has got right).

Along with the demise of Blackberry is the decline of Nokia in the mobile devices market. The Nokia Lumia 810 is a far cry from some of its predecessors that took the mobile world by storm and established Nokia as a strong player in the industry.

The Silicon Valley giants - Apple and Google - have shown the world what top dollar and American innovation at its best can do. Mobile devices are a hot market, but there is nothing hotter than social media right now in the tech world.

Around five years ago, my friends kept telling me to be careful on Facebook as it would become an online resume that employers would require. That's kind of what LinkedIn is and the folks at LinkedIn are pretty wild about Facebook's new jobs board. We're talking 1 billion users now and the fact that 50 percent of employers are keen on checking the Facebook profiles of new hires.

David Petraeus' extramarital affair

This story refuses to go away like most controversies similar to it.

I usually eschew discussing politics on this blog, but this is a break from tradition since this news story is well and truly hot in the U.S. right now. It has become somewhat of a national soap opera.

It it is about an extramarital affair that former CIA chief David Petraeus had with his married biographer, Paula Broadwell. Broadwell and Petraeus share West Point roots and also a fitness regimen. Furthermore, Petraeus liked to have positive press and this is where Broadwell came in even more handy.

What is more, is that the Petraeus scandal has extended to an investigation on a hand-picked General by Petraeus, John Allen, with regards to his supposed e-mails to socialite Jill Kelley who was the whistleblower in the Petraeus affair.

It has been quite a sudden drastic turn of affairs in the Obama administration with his much praised CIA director having to resign and the future of his Afghan war commander in jeopardy. There has been concern that national security may have been compromised as a result of all of this, but President Obama maintains that this is not so.

David Petraeus is now turning his attention to his family after resigning as CIA director. Petraeus acknowledges his wrongdoings but this extramarital affair had its roots as far back as the Spring of 2006. The two ‘lovers’ had an undercover way of communicating that would have been difficult to get wind of electronically: they saved correspondences in the draft folder of the same e-mail and once each one was read it would be deleted and replaced by a reply message by the viewer. Very clever indeed!

What to do with your money?

The Obama re-election and your investments.

The first thing I want you to do is to read the USA Inc. report written by Mary Meeker. I am quite an optimistic person, but even people like me need to be fed with information like this that borders on pessimistic to get a real perspective of where the U.S. is heading. While we’re on the subject of reading, let me recommend that I only recently picked up The Undercover Economist, which is sure to answer a lot of your elementary economics questions and more.

With this book, I am hoping to keep it simple and eschew the complex financial instruments that I have talked about and hopefully will dive into more later. Fiscal cliff has become a popular phrase as of late and it is something that I have talked about quite a bit already.

Actions to take now

  • Explore and invest in mining companies

I guess the obvious choice is health care stocks now that Obamacare is saved for the next four years. But why enlighten you on easily observable stuff. That is why I went with these mining companies since commodities such as gold and silver will be the last resort for investors faced with an ailing US economy and falling dollar.

  • Invest in Clean Energy Source companies

President Obama’s approach for energy independence was a stark contrast to Romney’s. Somewhere in the United States, electric vehicle manufacturers will be breathing a sigh of relief!

  • Invest outside the United States

It really appears as though inflation could creep up and it could be even more rampant because of the fiscal troubles. The U.S. credit rating could be further downgraded because Obama’s plans for taxes and government spending simply don’t solve the problems facing the U.S. economy (don’t worry, even Mitt Romney’s didn’t). Embrace the global economy!

High Frequency Trading

Playing the game of a few milliseconds!

I really felt that a post on this ultra-fast trading that relies on high tech machinery was a must on this Stock Fest blog. High Frequency Trading (HFT) is all about speed. Even a few milliseconds of time being created will lead to millions of dollars worth of profitable trades.

HFT is the quest to make faster and faster trades. Computers make tens of thousands of trades even when the price of a security goes from $65 to $65.01 to generate fairly good profits.

HFT firms across the globe are happy to pay the high fees necessary to make financial trade data transmission faster by a few milliseconds. High frequency traders now trade in the crucial financial markets such as London and Tokyo in addition to New York.

Highly complex algorithms and advanced mainframe computers will quickly parse through the financial data made available and pinpoint the prospects for HFT.

The CEO of Huawei Marine Networks, Nigel Bayliff tells us about the value of a couple of milliseconds: “A couple of milliseconds can roll out to a $20-million difference in [a trader’s] account at the end of the month.”

HFT firms are more than willing to shell out millions for even more blistering fast transmission speeds.  To put these astronomic costs into perspective, let's look at a recent project: A transatlantic cable being laid cost a staggering $400 million. The plus point of this project: HFTs save five milliseconds! But these milliseconds make all the difference.

Jets will have their hands full in Seatlle

The New York Jets will, once again, have their hands full as they travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. The Seahawks have proven this year, and historically, that they are nearly unbeatable at home. The Jets will be the latest team to test that theory. The Jets are currently 3-5 while the Seahawks have a 5-4 record. The Seahawks can stay in position to try and make a playoff run. The Jets, on the other hand, need a win to have any chance in hell at such.

The Jets have been a proverbial mess this year. Negativity has surrounded the team since the end of last year, and Rex Ryan may have the hottest coaching seat in all of sports right now. The Jets have averaged 21 points a game, and get just over 300 total yards per game. They have not had a Rex Ryan defense this season as well and give up 25 points per game. They are also allowing an average of 141 yards per game rushing.

The Seahawks have surprised many with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson. They have also played very strong defense. Offensively, Russell has not many games with sheer numbers, but has proved to be good down the stretch and makes few mistakes. Defensively, the Seahawks give up just 17 points a game and have been very good getting turnovers. This mistake free football has really showed that a solid disciplined team can really go far despite huge statistical numbers.

Miami will host the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 1pm

The 4-4 Miami Dolphins will play the 3-6 Tennessee Titans this Sunday at 1 PM ET. The game will be played at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium and will be a possible turning point for a Miami team that has showed some very promising moments this season. They are still in a race for the division, but really need this win Sunday. They have had some good success with rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill who has the second best record among rookie QBs behind Andrew Luck.

The Dolphins are coming off of a week 9 loss to the Colts in Indianapolis. The team fought hard and nearly won the game, which ended 23-20 in favor of Indy. Miami has taken advantage of their strong defense while the offense has done just enough to get by. The team, defensively, gives up just 83 yards a game rushing and has averaged just 18.6 allowed per game this season.

Tennessee has struggled in the area of defense, which has made them suffer most of their losses. They give up 415 yards a game, which includes nearly 150 yards a game on the ground. The team has also given up an average of 34 points a game to this point of the year as well. That certainly will not win many games, but may land them on the wrong side of the record books. Sunday should be a chance for the Dolphins to really try and show they belong in playoff conversations even if their opponent is not the greatest foe.
