Each year at the end of September, the community of Hermanus in South Africa comes together to celebrate the return of the Southern Right whales to Walker Bay. Hermanus is known world-wide as one of the premiere spots to see whales and the end of September is the peak of this season. The Hermanus Whale Festival is more than just a chance to see whales, however, and the people who put it on make sure to emphasize many important subjects about the state of the environment today.
