the Best Team vs. the Champions

Sabermetricians, with their unique view of the world, have questioned the very idea of playoff series "which are mostly determined by luck anyway." It's a fair question: what is the value of the October playoff system, if it has any value at all (beyond entertainment). First of all, notice that for many years there were no playoffs. There was a National League Champion, based on standings only, and an American League champion. When they started playing World Series, it was apparently a sort of exhibition, in the minds of many. We might tongue-in-check ask our sabermetric friends: why not simply play 162 games, and ratio bases gained over bases lost, and give the title to the team with the best ratio? It would be logical, but there would only be six fans a game in the stands..... think about it.
