Kamikaze, translated literally, means ‘divine wind.’ The terminology has its origins far back in Japanese history when a great storm destroyed an invading Mongol fleet in 1274 and saved Japan from being overrun. It has since become symbolic of victory gained through the favor of the gods and fate. When World War II arrived, this term would transform and come to represent a certain breed of pilot in the Japanese air force that were willing to sacrifice themselves in order to gain victory for their nation.
