Tips for surviving Ankor Wat

Snacks, water, tickets, maps and Tuk Tuks

Ankor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia is well known as being a must-see on the Southeast Asian travel plan. With its splendid temples, draped across hundreds of kilometers, visitors won’t be disappointed after paying their $20 entry fee. Though many things can be said about the history and which temples to see, those avenues are saturated. A simple Google search will render you the necessary results. For the unprepared, and most likely, unmotivated backpacker, here is a small list of survival tips which are completely necessary to actually enjoying your time visiting Ankor Wat.

Bring snacks: Yes, I know, you aren’t in elementary school anymore…but you are pretty helpless. Ankor Wat does offer some food choices, but unless you want to break your budget, you better buy snacks before hand. The 10K road from Siem Reap offers a number of street food stalls, as well as small markets, so bring a pack, and have it stuffed to the brim with snacks for the day.

Bring extra water: Cambodia is hot. Especially if you are riding a bicycle, make sure to bring at least a few bottles of water. They are sold throughout the complex,  but they are expensive. It’s good to stay hydrated while riding, as well as limiting the use of plastic.

Buy your ticket in advance: I’ve never heard anyone else having this problem, so I’m ashamed to admit it, but myself and the friends I was with got to a smaller entrance at Ankor Wat for sunset without having a ticket. We thought we would see the visitor center to buy ours on the way, but our route led us in a different direction. Though it’s well known you can buy a ticket around 5 p.m. for sunset and the next day, make sure you actually get it before getting to the entrance, or else you will be scrambling to find the money to pay a tuk tuk driver to fly you back to the ticket agency, then to Ankor Wat before, the sun sets.

Find a good map: Though there are large maps around the trails, having a personal map will be quite helpful when trying to see far out temples. Maps are located in guesthouses and in guidebooks, so make sure you have one with you once you start your journey.

Rent a Tuk Tuk or bicycle the night beforehand: Everyone either takes a Tuk Tuk or a bicycle to see Ankor Wat. Though for myself I’m a fan of pedaling around 50K, on a single speed bike, in the heat, not everyone is. Renting a Tuk Tuk, when splitting it with a group, is dirt cheap and can make the day less exhausting. On the same note, many guesthouses loan bikes for free, so those crazy enough to pedal can enjoy their day for free. Which ever route you choose, make sure to have it ready before you set off.

Have fun visiting Ankor Wat, and make sure to stay hydrated!

Sketchy Sketches: Dubstep Commercials Suck

We all have seen that horrible Internet Explorer commercial out there, so I think it is safe to say most of us agree dubstep commercials suck. Well YouTube magicians Smosh and Mike Diva teamed up to make this little "behind-the-scenes" at the advertising agencies responsible. However, I will add, dubstep DOES make Santa better.

Holiday gift guide for mom

Shopping for your mother

It may seem like a hard chore shopping for your mother. It may seem like your mother has everything and anything she wants. However, moms are easy people to find perfect presents for, if you actually consider the things she wants, needs or likes. This means you need to think about your actual mom and not some generic version of the word mom.

For instance, not all moms are big fans of perfumes. Yes, some moms love perfumes. Some actually collect many scents. Other moms have one scent they wear all the time. Then there are the moms who would rather wear scented body lotions or light bath sprays instead of colognes or perfumes. This is why you need to know your mom before your purchase such a purchase.

Jewelry is another ideal gift. However, you must know your mother before your shop for jewelry, too. Some moms love elegant looking jewelry. They adore pearls, simple chains with simple charms and short earrings. Then there are the moms who like jewelry that make a statement. They like large necklaces, bangle bracelets, large rings or dangly earrings. All you need to do is watch what your mom wears to know which category she falls into when it comes to jewelry.

Clothing is a nice gift. Sweaters, jackets and blouses are thoughtful. But to buy these you need to know what colors she likes. You also need to know her sizes. As for the nightgowns and robes, these are nice, too. However, most women usually have enough of these hanging in her closet. The same thing goes for throw blankets and warm socks.

If you want to buy mom something special to help keep her warm during the winter, consider buying her some special blend coffees that she adores or special cocoas that she likes. Pair these with some of her favorite cookies and you will be giving her a delicious snack she can enjoy during those long winter nights. This may be more enjoyable than having to box away another blanket, robe or nightgown.

Salads for dummies

Why not make it a meal?

A salad is a meal. When you are lazy, broke and have a tiny kitchen, why not make the salad really big and add whatever you want? Then you don't have to bother with a main course. The only difference between a big and small salad is a few more chops of the knife.

With salads there are infinite possibilities, but for most salads I use certain core ingredients: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, croutons, and what I mix together for the dressing. Other favorites include onion, mango, nuts and cranberries or raisins. And of course you can add meat, such as bacon or chicken.

Croutons are just toast. Chop it up into small pieces and throw away the crumbs. Then let it sit at least ten minutes to stiffen up.

For the dressing, I use olive oil, vinegar, lime, salt and pepper. You can also add chili powder - use very little, just a spoonful or so. Mix olive oil and just a little vinegar in a shot glass. Squeeze in a lime or two. Then put a little salt on the avocado and sprinkle pepper everywhere. After that add Parmesan - either the cheap canned powdered stuff or, much better, grate it yourself.

A pimped-out salad is a filling, exciting meal. This recipe serves two - either you and your companion or you twice. There's never a reason to make a one-portion meal, especially if you are alone, because you can eat the leftovers - possibly for days.

Already you have a beautiful salad. To make it more beautiful, add:

MEAT, ETC: chicken, bacon, sausage or hard-boiled egg, all chopped into bite sized pieces or smaller.

FRUIT: Mango, strawberries, mandarin oranges, cranberries or raisins.

NUTS: If you fry them in honey, it will take your salad to another level.

Remember, as long as it tastes good, there’s no wrong way to make a salad.

Oh No They Didn't: Dealing With A Huge Spider

Those of you not crippled by arachnophobia have probably been in this next situation, or at least the initial set-up: You find a spider, you get creeped out, you leave the room and decide to come back and kill it. However, most of us think through our weapon of choice and the collateral damage it may incur. Not this bloke.

Grooming habits that can help your feline friend look purr-fect.

Help your cat look her best all year.

Cats are clean freaks by nature. They hate dirt. Many love to be petted. Right after we pet them, they must give themselves a complete bath, as if we have germs or something. This is all part of their nature and charm. This is what makes cats unique.  However, no matter how hard they try, they need some human help to complete their grooming tasks.

First, all pet owners should comb their kitties daily. This should be done whether kitty is a long haired cat or a short haired one. The ideal time to comb a cat is between five to 10 minutes. However, this can be done in intervals and it can be done in shorter intervals as kitty learns to like this combing process.

When combing kitty, try to use a metal comb from head to tail. If kitty has long hair, you should also comb her belly and leg areas. Next, you should use a rubber brush to remove any loose hair from kitty. Both long haired kitties and short haired ones will shed. Removing the loose hair will help keep fur balls from forming and help keep your home cleaner, as well.

Should you bathe kitty? This will depend on a few issues. Is kitty’s hair oily or dirty? Does kitty smell? How well does kitty like water?

Most cats hate water. However, there are a strange few who likes water. Of course, the earlier you train a cat to bathe, the easier the act is.

You can bathe a kitty in a mild detergent or a shampoo made for cats. Wash kitty as you would any animal. Wet her fur, apply the shampoo or detergent, work the shampoo or detergent into her hair, and rinse thoroughly. You want to have another family member assist you in this task.

Nail clipping is another grooming chore that should be completed. However, this is something that not every pet owner should try to do. If you clip the nail too short, kitty will have a sore foot. If you clip into the pink area of the nail bleeding can occur. You may wish to have your vet or pet groomer do this chore for you.

Novos Baianos

A great Brazilian album – the best, according to Rolling Stone

Say what you will about Rolling Stone Magazine lists, when a group is on the top spot they are probably there for a reason. The usual suspects compete for the top places on lists like best song, best rock band and best album: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan. But what about the 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music?

The album Acabou Chorare by Novos Baianos claimed this position in 2007. This 10-track album was released back in 1972. It’s mostly acoustic, a mix of samba, bossa nova and rock. It’s one of the best introductions to the large body of popular Brazilian music from the late '60s and '70s when samba musicians got into rock groups like the Beatles and created the tropicalia movement, also known as MBP (Brazilian popular music). Another forerunner was Os Mutates, who are still active today.

Acabou Chorare is Novos Baianos’ most famous album and it features two of the group’s most loved songs, "Brasil Pandeiro" and Preta, Pretinha,” great sing-alongs if you only understood the words. Like the rest of the songs on the album, these two hits have a tight groove and a nice loud/soft dynamic, changing gears from gentle singing and acoustic guitar to the full-on band, including electric bass and waves of percussion.

It reminds me a lot of the Violent Femmes’ first album: acoustic, super tight and full of fast-tempos, melodies and hooks. The similarity isn’t only musical; both albums capture the feeling of adolescence at a specific time – for the Femmes it was angst, and for Novos Baianos it was saudade, a Portuguese word meaning longing, or sadness.

The specific time was back in the eighties or seventies, respectively, but the music remains timeless. Both albums will be listened to by many generations to come.

"The Talk"

Knowing when it is the right time.

My youngest daughter just turned 10 last month. She is at an age where I am beginning to wonder if I should have some type of talk with her. I feel like she is too young for this, but on the other hand, I don’t want her to learn all these things from the wrong sources.

This is just one of those things that, as a parent, you hope you make the right decision about. There are many other subjects in parenting where this happens too. It is one of those things where you think about it, make a decision to do it and then hope that it was the right decision to make.

Knowing when to have “the talk” with a child is not always easy and every child is different. To me, there is no point in doing this until the child begins to approach the age of puberty. If you notice that your child is starting to have changes in his or her body, the time has probably arrived for the talk to happen.

Many parents are nervous about doing this and there are good reasons to be nervous. A parent will wonder what to say, or how much to say. Is it better to offer too much information and detail than not enough? These are all very tough questions that parents must answer themselves.

One thing to keep in mind though is that, as a parent, this is one of your responsibilities. Your children will learn about this subject somewhere. Would you rather it be from unreliable sources or from you?

Pulling At My Heartstrings: Dog Loves His Auto-Ball Launcher

I'm not quite sure when Petsami stopped being an average YouTube channel and rocketed their way into being an awesome one, but I thank them nonetheless. Here we have a very smart and patient dog, who has a toy that will never tire out. Game on!

Butter vs. shortening when baking

These ingredients offer different results.

If you are like many people, you may not realize that butter and shortening offer very different results when they are used for baking. This is something I never knew until recently and I find this very interesting.

For people that like to bake cookies a lot, using butter or shortening is often a preference a person chooses. You can interchange these two ingredients and you may be surprised to find out that the results are very different. By switching this one ingredient, you will be able to obtain the texture of cookie you prefer. Some people like a thicker, soft cookie, while others may like a thin, crisper cookie.

If you prefer a thicker cookie, shortening might be the right ingredient for you to use. Shortening is an ingredient that contains a very high melting temperature. This means that it takes longer for shortening to melt in the oven than it does for butter.

Butter and margarine, on the other hand, have lower melting temperatures. If you use butter or margarine in a recipe, the cookies will tend to spread faster. This will result in a thinner cookie because of this temperature difference.

Another difference between using butter and shortening is the flavor. If you use margarine or shortening, this ingredient is not adding any flavor to the cookie. Butter does add flavor though, and this flavor is hard to achieve with any other ingredients. If you like a rich flavor in the cookies you make, using butter is the secret.
