Minneapolis Music Venues

Minneapolis music scene has a variety of venues to satisfy most music enthusiasts. From concert halls to clubs, event centers to bars. Do not like to catch your favorite band play inside? Minneapolis music scene has outdoor venues with a variety of bands playing throughout the 'short' Minnesota summer.

First Avenue is a Minneapolis music institution. Made famous by Prince's (or artist formerly known as Prince) “Purple Rain” and is Minneapolis' top music venue. This venue is pretty small and extremely dark. The music played seems to resonate off the walls and ceiling, catching pitches and harmonies of the great artist that have played this venue. Artists like Ani DiFranco, INXS, Aerosmith, Eminem, Atmosphere and Pantera have played First Avenue. They also have a side bar, 7^th Street Entry, for local and upcoming performers.

NOFX speaks the truth with their song “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock”. The Triple Rock Social Club has been bringing Minneapolis music from the punk scene since the mid 80's. One might not expect to see an amazing concert in this small, basement like venue but they can pull it off. If you do not go there for the music, at least stop in for the nostalgia of the punk scene. Free Bacon on Wednesdays, decent beer selection and it is a dive bar with a trained chef.

The ambiance and the decor along with amazing sound system makes Varsity Theater a great Minneapolis music venue. A variety of seating with elevated booths, couches and chairs give concerts a very laid back feeling. From Minnesota Opera to Yellowcard to Better than Ezra, Varsity Theater offers a variety to Minneapolis music.

When Bob Dylan sold the Orpheum Theatre in 1988, he had no idea it would eventually run a Broadway production of “Miss Saigon” or Disney's “The Lion King”. The Orpheum Theatre is an excellent Minneapolis music venue as well. Enjoy Widespread Panic, John Pryne or Nickle Creek from the comfort of velvet chairs and carpet along with amazing acoustics.

Outdoor concerts are a great way to experience the Minneapolis music scene. There is not much better than spreading out a blanket on a hill and listening to music while the sun sets. Bryant Square Park, Lake Harriet and Minnehaha Park offer performances ranging from a full orchestra to solo artists throughout the summer months. Various festivals for the fourth of July holiday and the Minnesota State Fair also offer awesome outdoor concerts.

With great venues like First Avenue, Triple Rock and the Varsity Theater, the Minneapolis music scene has a venue for everyone. Whether you want to see a national act or a local band, something is going on at one of these venues every night of the week.
