confused about cat food!
I love my two 1 year old cats, and I want them to get the best nutrition possible. I am very confused about cat food. I have been feeding them IAMS since 8 weeks of age. Recently I have heard some bad things about the company. I am a vegetarian and very concerned about nurtition for myself and my pets. How do I find out what the best brands of cat food are? Any advice would be appreciated.

On compassion
"The essence of love and compassion is understanding, the ability to recognize the physical, material, and psychological suffering of others, to put ourselves "inside the skin" of the other. We "go inside" their body, feelings, and mental formations, and witness for ourselves their suffering. Shallow observation as an outsider is not enough to see their suffering. We must become one with the subject of our observation. When we are in contact with another's suffering, a feeling of compassion is born in us. Compassion means, literally, "to suffer with.""-Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk Here are some beautiful words to meditate about as you go about your daily lives. It's a simple, yet profound truth that needs to be put into practice by more people. If only our world leaders could put into action what these simple words are saying.
Blame the Russians
Well, they're just partly to blame. Next month the Space Shuttle Atlantis will be embarking on a mission to do repairs on the eighteen year-old Hubble Telescope. This mission might prove to be a bit tricky due to all the debris floating about in space. According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor:
"The environment where the Hubble orbits, about 350 miles above the Earth’s surface, has more debris than where the International Space Station orbits and where most shuttle missions are conducted, at about 210 miles above the Earth. This “space junk” includes defunct satellites and spent rocket stages, fragments from exploded satellites, rocket engine effluents, paint flakes, and other small particles – all traveling at speeds of more than 15,000 miles per hour."
That doesn't sound very good. The article goes on to say:
"The problem of space junk is particularly insidious because objects in orbit that strike debris tend to create more debris, thereby increasing the risk of future impacts, which would in turn create more debris. This potential runaway feedback effect could create what’s known as the Kessler Syndrome, a scenario proposed by NASA consultant Donald J. Kessler, in which space travel, and even the use of satellites, becomes impracticable because of the high risk of collision."
Could this be the beginning of the end for space travel and satellite TV? And why do humans have to pollute everything we touch?
We are our worst detractors.
Family events and meals
I am not a vegetarian, but have a college age grandson who is. His philosophy has created much sadness and a break in our family that is heartbreaking. He refuses to attend any family holidays because other family memebers eat meat, even though we always make vegetarian food for him that he likes. We all are happy to let him do his thing, but feel the rest of us should be able to do ours, too, and still enjoy each others company. Surely this is not the way most vegetarians carry on their lives. Family times are very important to us and we feel so sad that this is happening. It makes us angry with the whole vegetarian lifestyle. How can we change this picture?
A question of belief
Since my last post I still haven't cracked open the book God Is Not Great, but the question of God's greatness has been on my mind. As I've mentioned before I am a non-practicing, non-believing Catholic, and am in no way interested in the worship of God in any way, shape or form. I am however interested in the many ways that this idea of God plays into our lives. And I am interested in the impact God has in people's lives, and humanity as whole. What does our belief in God really say about us? And does God have a place?
While I was doing research on the matter, I came across a website that is dedicated to the debunking of the God-myth. I was drawn to the site for the 50 simple proofs God doesn't exist. This website is full of facts and references pertaining to theistic religions, of the mono- and poly- variety. It is in-depth to say the least.
I was especially drawn to the chapters on the Bible. As a Catholic of the Latin persuasion, the Bible is pretty much off-limits. It's confusing and weird, besides, it's been my experience that Catholics are more interested in getting mass over and done with to assuage their sinful lives, than to learn about Scripture.
I get the sense that there is an underlying feeling in society today that God is a tool we use when we need to fix something in ourselves, and a weapon when we want to destroy each other and justify selfish acts. As in holy wars and a little something known as the Inquisition. Am I sounding jaded?
My kitten is sucking on my other kitten
I have two 7 week old kittens. I've had them living with me for one week. My friend owns the mother and said that once the kittens started eating real food that I could take them. I've just started noticing about two days ago that one of the kittens is sucking on the other kitten. When I pull her away, she goes right back and continues sucking on the other one. What should I do? Take her back to her mother? Should I keep pulling them apart whenever she does it? Please help.
Harry Potter, not for plagiarizers
Don't hold your breath for that Harry Potter Lexicon.
A judge ruled in favor of JK Rowling in her copyright infringement lawsuit against Steven Vander Ark, a fan and website operator who wrote an unauthorized encyclopedia called the Harry Potter Lexicon.
To say that Mr. Vander Ark 'wrote' the book is a bit of a stretch. It is precisely the reason why the judge ruled against him. According to Rowling, the encyclopedia basically plagiarized her work, and didn't have much to add of it's own. PDR books the publisher of the unauthorized Lexicon has been ordered to pay $6,750 in damages to Rowling.
It seems like everyone wants a piece of Harry Potter. Check out this story about a Bollywood film titled Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terror. Looks like another lawsuit is brewing up for Harry Potter.
