Bad Science: Whale "research" another name for commercial whaling
The butchers scientists at the Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo have revealed the findings of their more than twenty years study of minke whales. The study was published by mainstream publication Polar Biology, after being rejected by two other scientific journals. Check out this story for more details.
So after brutally slaughtering more than 4,500 minke whales, what did the research show:
Whales are losing blubber due to climate change.
The scientists justified the killings by saying that it was the only way to accurately study the animals. Some of the animals were unusable in the research because of the damage to their bodies from explosive harpoons and other crude methods used to kill them.
The researchers claim that krill, the main source of the minke whale's diet, is in decline in the oceans. The study argues that global warming, over-fishing of krill for fish harvesting and competition from humpback whales are the culprits. Many in the scientific community fear that Japan will use this as an excuse for allowing commercial whaling of the humpbacks and other larger cetaceans.
Luckily, researchers in New Zealand and Australia plan to launch their own study, but without the gruesome slaughtering. Read more here.

Be it Jewish, Bhuddist, Muslim, Christian, Daoist, and so forth. To put down another religion shows your lack of faith in your own. Here's a pic of my 1st stablemate bridle! It took FOREVER to do and has all the little details- laced reins (i sewed them myself), 5 WORKING buckles on the headstall, and 1 working buckle on the reins. And it would have had a raised browband and noseband, but I figured out how to raise the leather AFTER I'd done the nose banc and I didn't want to re-do it.

One of the best children's books ever written, in my opinion, has been made into a movie!
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, has been made into a full length motion picture. But apparently it hasn't been without controversy. The director Spike Jonez has had to re-shoot the movie in order to get it released by Warner Bros. by October 2009. Check out this blog dedicated entirely to Where the Wild Things Are.
Where to even begin with this one....?
For anyone who has ever read the book, you know it contains exactly twenty pages of text, in which there is approximately one sentence per page... does anyone see where I'm going with this? How are they going to stretch this one out? The same way they have done with every beloved kid's book, remember The Cat in the Hat and the Grinch movie?
I have a feeling that this will, sadly, be another case of Hollywood destroying something beautiful and pure in order to make a quick buck, by people who can't create something of their own. What is really disgusting is that this is Hollywood at its finest: Rob people of their own imagination, let us do the visualizing for you, and then let us sell you a bunch of cheaply-made crap. Because as you'll recall from the movie Spaceballs, the real money in movies is merchandising.
Hollywood needs to keep their grubby, greedy hands off of well-written literature period.
I guess that in capitalism nothing is sacred, not even our fond childhood memories.
bovine bone grafting
Hi, I've been advised by my periodontist that I will need to have gum surgery and some bone grafting carried out using a bovine derived bone substitute. Has anybody heard of any recent research looking at the risks of prion infection/bse transmission using this type of material? I've found very little info although scarily I did come across an article about refusing blood donations from patients with bovine grafts. Any advice appreciated thanks.
