Several battleground states are not prepared to meet the challenge of administering the general election on November 4th, where turnout will be unprecedented, According to a report conducted by Advancement Project, a national leading voter protection organization.

In Pennsylvania, Advancement Project estimated potential turnout at three different levels for Berks, Montgomery counties and Philadelphia, to assess the impact of polling place resource allocations. Based on these estimates and the actual numbers of machines and poll workers assigned to different precincts, Advancement Project has concluded that many jurisdictions appear severely under-resourced and ill-prepared.

....the majority of precincts in Berks and Montgomery Counties would not be able to process all of its voters in 13 hours, and there are precincts in all those counties as well as Philadelphia that could potentially need more than 20 or even 30 hours to process all voters

Marybeth Kuznik, Executive Director of VotePA warns "Plan On Long Lines In Bucks Co, PA". In her testimony to PA lawmakers, she warned that officials that state there will not be enough voting machines in counties using paperless computerized machines. The state is basing its estimates on the use of lever machines, instead of considering the fact that it takes much longer vote on computerized machines. The Intelligencer backs this up in an article today.

VotePA STATEMENT ON ALLEGHENY COUNTY SOFTWARE VERIFICATION TESTING

Yesterday afternoon, Allegheny County announced that it had tested and verified the firmware on a random sample of eighteen of its ES&S iVotronic voting machines. The tests were said to be conducted at the County's elections warehouse on Saturday and Monday under the supervision of County Election officials following protocols developed in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of State. The County said the actual testing was done by SysTest Labs, which is the private consulting firm that performed the original testing of the iVotronic to the 2002 "federal" standards, allowing its current certification in Pennsylvania and other states....

Poll Workers Become Confused...Pennsylvania voters listed as absentee not allowed to cast ballots in the primary

http://www.campaignlegalcenter.org/attachments/1908.pdf

Poll workers, no matter how well intentioned, can become confused by the minutiae of election law. Here is what one man—an election activist, no less—wrote to colleagues after the Pennsylvania primary: “As an election judge last Tuesday in a heavily minority recinct in Lancaster I can attest to the fact there were several instances of newly registered voters who showed up to vote (in the Democratic primary) but couldn’t because they were listed as independent or no party. At no point were we instructed to allow these voters to cast a provisional ballot, and frankly, it did not occur to me to rovide them with one.” Curiously, the election judge, who runs the precinct, said he did give a provisional ballot to a man who insisted he was a registered Democrat, which is what he should have been doing all along. Voters who know their rights can insist on better treatment.

What if your ballot doesn’t arrive? The first step, for domestic voters, is to call the county election office and ask why you have not received your ballot. This is important; in some states, like Pennsylvania, people who were listed as absentee voters but showed up to vote at their former local precinct were not allowed to cast ballots in the primary. Nobody wants to be in that situation in November.

In Pennsylvania, paperless machines also did not turn on at the start of voting, causing lines and delays.

Michelle Obama, First Lady

Thursday, October 30 5:15pm Dear Diary, Have begun considering my post-election plans, given the fact I’m a shoe-in as First Lady. I do like the way that sounds: Michelle Obama, First Lady. That would look great on business cards. I’ll have to look into that. But I can’t just be a Laura Bush of First Ladies. I will be seen as an icon, like Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy. My hope is to achieve the same status as they did in their fields: political activism, fashion, and entertainment. I’ve decided to devise a list of ways to gain more publicity and status. Michelle Obama’s Top-Five Strategies for a Successful Term as First Lady 1. More classy outfits. My J. Crew outfit has already garnered much publicity and comparisons to Jackie Kennedy. I can’t get enough of the media spotlight, as long as it’s positive. No more of these fabricated snack-expenditure stories. 2. Influential social programs. Can’t be like Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” ad campaign, which was well-meant, but a hardly successful way to get kids to stop doing drugs. Though I have to agree that a television ad would be a great to publicize this. 3. The Michelle Obama show. The only drawback to this is that we already have several talk shows hosted by strong black women. Still, there has yet to be one hosted by a First Lady of the United States. 4. The Michelle Obama Foundation: a charity organization to benefit disadvantaged people abroad. Must be careful to avoid drawing comparisons to Cindy’s organization, and the potential rumors that I’m somehow stealing drugs. 5. Have more children. It would be cute, and everyone likes kids. But this would sadly complicate my ability to be seen as a serious political figure. Not to mention, people might somehow call me irresponsible for the little “surprise.” Must think more on this tonight… Yours always, Michelle Originally posted in The Secret Diary of Michelle Obama

A Rant on Joe the Plumber

Thursday, October 30 4:30pm Dear Diary, Just heard that McCain got stood up by Joe the Plumber! Hilarious, especially considering the fact that McCain has basically based the last half of his campaign on Joe the Plumber. But who really listens to this guy anyway? He sounds like an idiot, especially since it’s come out that he would do better under our economic plan than McCain’s. And why does the media feel that he deserves so much publicity?! He doesn’t even understand politics, much less what he believes. His ignorant views on Israel make that painstakingly clear. There should be one Joe giving out opinions on politics, and that’s me. I’m beginning to think that the name “Joe” is being abused in this election, especially with Joe the Plumber, Joe Six Pack, and now Joe the Singer. The name Joe deserves some respectable nicknames. Here are my top five suggestions, which I will pitch to David: 1. Joe the Genius. Inspires awe and comes across as smarter than the average bear - er, Joe, as it were. 2. Joe the Politician. A nickname after my own heart. 3. Joe the Inspiration. I think this one speaks for itself. 4. Joe the Change-Bringer. Might work on the wording of this one, but the idea is genius, if I don’t say so myself. 5. Joe the Rebel. Have nixed “Joe the Maverick,” as the word “maverick” now strikes an unpleasant chord after McCain and Palin have abused it so much. Until next time, Joe
