A Ban on Fast-Food Restaurant Ads Could Curb Childhood Obesity
Why stop at fast-food restaurants? I say go for the whole junk-food industry, that includes cookies, potato chips, soda pop, candy, all those things that contribute to obesity. It seems this country is totally out of control with their eating habits. Many parents are not taking responsibility in feeding their children healthy diets, so what's left to do? Parent the parents! According to this article from Reuters:
Banning fast-food advertising on television in the United States could reduce the number of overweight children by as much as 18 percent, researchers said on Wednesday. "We have known for some time that childhood obesity has gripped our culture, but little empirical research has been done that identifies television advertising as a possible cause," said economist Shin-Yi Chou of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. For their study, funded in part by the federal government, Chou and colleagues used data on nearly 13,000 children from the 1979 Child-Young Adult National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, both issued by the U.S. Department of Labor. "The advertising measure used is the number of hours of spot television fast-food restaurant advertising messages seen per week," they wrote in the Journal of Law and Economics. "Our results indicate that a ban on these advertisements would reduce the number of overweight children ages 3-11 in a fixed population by 18 percent and would reduce the number of overweight adolescents ages 12-18 by 14 percent." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 13.9 percent of children aged 2 to 5 are overweight, 18.8 percent of those aged 6 to 11 are and more than 17 percent of those 12 to 19. The percentages have been steadily rising. Television watching is also known to raise obesity rates, both because children exercise less and because it can interfere with sleep. The Institute of Medicine reported in 2006 that there was compelling evidence linking food advertising on television and increased childhood obesity. This is one way to do it, I suppose. But I doubt that the lack of advertisements will have an impact on what choices people make. Especially for those who have made it a habit to eat fast-food. Like many bad habits, it will be hard to break and will require individuals to make a conscious effort to change their lifestyle. The fast-food industry should be glad they don't have to dump all that money in commercials, maybe then they'll be able to afford putting more quality ingredients in the crap they pass off as food.
Minnesota Recount Starts Today
The recount is underway for the Minnesota state Senate seat that could give the majority to the Democrats. Election officials in Minnesota yesterday began a manual recount of the 2.9 million votes cast on November 4 for Republican incumbent Norm Coleman or the Democrat former comedian Al Franken. They have until December 5 to complete the job. The state canvassing board postponed a decision on rejected absentee ballots. The recount was triggered by the smallness of Coleman's lead, only 215.
Franken met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for about 20 minutes on Wednesday morning in Reid’s office on the second floor of the Capitol building. After the meeting, he told reporters he had briefed the Majority Leader on the mechanics of the recount and said he is "cautiously optimistic" he will win.
The former comedy writer said he had scheduled meetings at the DSCC, where he will meet with experts who know about setting up transition offices and organizational things along those lines. He said it would "be irresponsible not to start thinking about that stuff before in case we do win."

Starbucks election day give-away
Blogworks.org has estimated the cost of Starbucks election day offer of a free tall drip coffee to anyone who voted at $170,000; undoubtably, a small price to pay for the coffee giant. However, this estimate assumes only those who typically drink drip took advantage of this offer, which I beg to disagree with; though usually a latte girl myself, I would definitely have taken advantage of the offer if I hadn't voted absentee (hmm, maybe they would have given me one anyway. I should have looked into it!). Also considering the grim economic times, I'm sure many who can't kick their Starbucks habit have cut out the more expensive drinks in favor of drip anyway, so the estimate of habitual drip drinkers is probably too low.
And wonder if Obama got his free coffee?
The foundress of the champagne industry
Just came across a new book that looks fascinating: The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It by Tilar J. Mazzeo. The book tells the story of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, the woman who made the brand Veuve Clicquot ("veuve" in French, of course, means "widow") a household name and whose vision shaped how the world views champagne today. Defying the traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries, as a young widow Clicquot brought champagne onto the world scene and became a business mogul at a time when women engaging in commerce at any level were scarce indeed.
Check out a great description of the book and more information on the Widow Clicquot at the blog Luxist! And remember, only 36 more shopping days till Christmas: this book would make a great gift for any champagne or wine enthusiast, or history buff.
Of course, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot always makes a great holiday gift itself!

My boyfriend of almost 2 years left on Feb 11 for BMT. I haven't heard from him or even got a letter from him. I was wondering if anyone is going though the same thing or if anyone knows when he will get to call or write a letter. Kelly
Tofurky, A Great Idea For Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day can be a difficult time for a vegetarian, considering that the day revolves around a big turkey feast. But you don't have to feel left out. A great option to consider is Tofurky!
Tofurky is the brand name of a mock turkey product that is a vegetarian alternative to turkey. It's one of many mock turkey products in the market, but definitely the best known, partly due to the attention it has recieved in TV sitcoms. But it's actually not that bad, especially if you haven't eaten real turkey in a long time.
Tofurky comes in two varieties. The Tofurky Feast and the Tofurky Roast. With the Feast you get a complete Thanksgiving meal in a box. You get the roast itself, as well as potato dumplings, cranberry, vegetarian stuffing and gravy, plus a mock wishbone. The Roast is just the roast, but you can purchase the stuffing and gravy seperatley.
So where does one find such a fine product? The best places to look are your local Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. But nearly all health food grocery stores have Tofurky, as do the larger chain grocery stores like Albertson's, Safeway, Fred Meyer and Costco.
So this Thanksgiving enjoy a delicious vegetarian meal, without all that slaving in the kitchen.

Missouri: Don't Miss This Chance to Have Your Voices Heard
Missouri, while you may still be waiting to know the outcome of the 2008 elections, you have an opportunity to make your voices heard about the current presidential administration by visiting Goodbye.us. Goodbye.us is a web based project to gather (and present) as many open letters to our outgoing president as possible before inauguration day. Our goal is fairly simple: to capture the feelings Americans have towards one of the most notable and controversial administrations in American history. Think of it as a time capsule for the Bush Administration. So if you have something to say to Mr. Bush, please do not hesitate to visit Goodbye.us !
Good Reading: The American Public Says Goodbye to a President
This is the end of an era, to say the least. George W. Bush has been a polarizing force in this county and his mere presence during these crisis-fraught years will probably prove to be an endless source of controversy. To bring a sense of closure to this administration and document the mix of emotions as we say goodbye, a new site named Goodbye.us has been launched to capture the mood of the nation in the form of an open letter. While this site is still in the beginning phases, the obvious hope is that there will be an outpouring of emotion to document, and maybe even present to President Bush. Think of it as a national time capsule of the era. So please, take a look and if you have something to say to Mr. Bush, share!
