The Return of Pirates, A Symptom of Something Worse

Somalia is a hell-hole.  Like most of Africa, it is a nation where chaos and crime rule.  Most recently, this East African country has been making headlines for it's pirates.  That's right, pirates have been hijaking ships, and oil tankers in the Indian Ocean.  But this is just one symptom of something so much worse.  Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew dictator Mohammed Siad Barre and then turned on eachother.  Read about current conditions here.
The advocacy group Refugees International says the situation in Somalia is worse than ever. More than 1.3 million Somalis are now displaced within the country. Thirty-five-thousand fled Mogadishu in October and 10,000 crossed the border to Kenya in September. In the south, one in six children under five years old is malnourished. Duplat, an advocate with Refugees International, explained how piracy is contributing to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia. “It’s bringing attention to Somalia, but unfortunately it’s the wrong kind of attention for two reasons: first, because it provokes the wrong kind of response, and the international community is now policing Somali waters, but this policing will do little to address the root cause of the problem, which is obviously lawlessness inside Somalia. Its also attracting attention and provoking the kind of strong response that Somalis perceive that economic interests trump their humanitarian concerns.”
As if piracy and anarchy were not bad enough, the violence that the people have to be subjected to is increasing by the day.  Read more here.  But it was this story that put me over the edge.  From Sunday, November 2:
A Somali girl who said she had been raped has been stoned to death in Somalia after being accused of adultery, a human rights group has said.
Amnesty International said in a press release on Friday that the victim, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, had been 13 years old - not 23 as earlier reports had suggested.
Duhulow was stoned to death on October 27 by dozens of men in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators in the southern port city of Kismayo, Amnesty International and Somali media reported, citing witnesses.
The situation in Somalia is a mess, and the international community seems to be too afraid, or too indifferent to do anything about it, unless it concerns precious oil.  There is so much loss of human life, and violations of human rights are the norm, so why isn't this region getting the attention it ought to?  Why are we more concerned with what the new First Lady will be wearing and not about the rapes and murders of innocent women and children?  Is it possible that Africa is just a lost cause?

Cocaine's Blood-Stained Trail

From the growers to the dealers to the users, cocaine leaves a long trail of blood.  Cocaine has ravaged the communities where it is grown, it has destroyed the cities where it is distributed, and it wrecks the lives of the individuals and families of those who use it. Cocaine, is a poison to humanity and to world peace. According to this report:
Far from being a “victimless crime”, use of the illicit drug was supporting paramilitaries who terrorise the Colombian population with kidnappings and landmines, Francisco Santos Calderon said.
Not only that,
Landmines used to protect crops and processing labs were responsible for almost 900 civilian deaths this year in Colombia, which is now has the highest incidence of landmine victims in the world. FARC and other narco-terror groups also carry out frequent kidnappings of high profile figures such as Ms Betancourt, the French-Colombian politician who was held in jungle captivity for more than six years before her release earlier this year.
Cocaine users are contributing to the destruction of the rain forests, read more here:
The Colombian government says four sq. meters (4.8 sq. yards) of rain forest have to be cleared to produce a gram of cocaine — and 2.2 million hectares (5.44 million acres) of Colombian tropical forest have been cut down to grow coca in the last twenty years.
On every level this drug takes lives, and feeds on the poor and needy for it's transport, with absolutely no regard for human life.  Read here:
Ordinary people are also suffering in Latin America because they are being drawn into drug trafficking, putting their lives at risk by becoming "mules", transporting substances inside their bodies.
There is an excellent movie called Maria Full of Grace, that tells the story of a Colombian, young woman who is lured into becoming a "mule" to help support her impoverished family.  That is the grim reality of cocaine.  A drug that is elevated to such glamorous heights by the rich and famous most likely has been transported into the country in some poor, desperate person's bowels. Think about that the next time you snort a line.

Great American Smokeout, Nov. 20

Don't forget, tomorro is the Great American Smokeout.  I encourage all the laadies who smoke to kick the habit, at least for 24 hours.  I have been smoke-free for six weeks and I''ve never felt better.  It's amazing how quickly you start feeling the effects of quitting.  It hasn't been easy, the temptation to smoke is always there.  Especially when co-workers are constantly reminding you about it, but don't get discouraged.  If your friends don't support your decision, find people who do.  That's one way to know who your real friends are. The ways that smoking affect our bodies is quite scary.  You should be scared! Check out the fact sheet on the American Lung Association website for more info. Here's just a few facts about women and smoking:
  • Smoking is directly responsible for 80 percent of lung cancer deaths in women in the U.S. each year.
  • Women who smoke also have an increased risk for developing cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx (voice box), esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and uterine cervix.
  • Women who smoke double their risk for developing coronary heart disease.
  • Women have been extensively targeted in tobacco marketing dominated by themes of an association between social desirability, independence, weight control and smoking messages conveyed through advertisements featuring slim, attractive, and athletic models.
  • Postmenopausal women who smoke have lower bone density than women who never smoked. Women who smoke have an increased risk for hip fracture compared to never smokers. Cigarette smoking also causes skin wrinkling that could make smokers appear less attractive and prematurely old.

Say Goodbye to George W. Bush

Wednesday, November 19th 8:35pm Dear Diary, It’s incredible to think that we have won the election. But we haven’t been inaugurated yet. George Bush still has 60 days left in office, and I think that it’s only fitting that we write letters of farewell to him. After all, he presided under one of the most divided eras of our country, and many of us have mixed emotions as he departs office. I certainly have a lot I’d like to say to him. After finding a website named http://goodbye.us that compiles goodbye letters to him, I’m going to write one, and I encourage everyone else to do so as well. Until next time, Joe the Veep
