Taliban Lunatics Confess To Burning Schoolgirls

In Afghanistan getting an education can be a risky affair, if you are female. Earlier this month, a group of girls on their way to their all-girls high school were doused with what appears to be battery acid by two men in motorcycles.  The two men used toy squirt guns to spray the girls in the face.  Six girls total were injured in the attack, two were blinded. The Taliban denied any involvement with the attack on the girls, though it was believed that the extremist Islamic group had targeted the girls.  The Taliban which ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, until they were ousted by NATO, forbade the education of women. Today the police in Kandahar have arrested 10 Taliban militants who say they were involved in the attack.  The men who assaulted the girls said that they were irate that the girls dared to attend high school. According to the story in the NYT:
Zalmay Ayobi, the spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, said that the orders to carry out the attack had been given from a foreign country, although he did not name the country. The militants were arrested by the police last week. Mr. Ayobi said a joint delegation from the Interior Ministry and the office of the attorney general in the capital, Kabul, had arrived in Kandahar on Monday to evaluate the cases of the suspects.
Officials say the men, who confessed their involvement in the attack claim that a high-ranking member of the Taliban paid them 100,000 Pakistani rupees for each girl they burned.  The Taliban is insistent on maintaining women in a second-class citizen status.

Wuthering Heights, Gothic Romance

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Where to begin with this one?  Since I was a teenager, I've had a yearly ritual where I read this novel every November.  Wuthering Heights is by far my all-time favorite novel.  I just finished reading it for about the tenth time and it's just as mesmerizing as the first time. This is definitely not the feel-good, love story.  It is dark and depressing and should be read in the fall when it is rainy and windy and you can curl up in your favorite chair and get lost in the dark and stormy Yorkshire moors.  This book is an unpolished and devastating epic of childhood playmates who grow into soul mates, is widely regarded as the most original tale of thwarted desire and heartbreak in the English language.  It's very hard to have compassion for the main characters, who despite being passionately in love with one another, adamantly refuse to express that love because of the social barriers. There is a lot of symbolism and at times you have to delve deeper than the surface to understand what's happening. The antagonist in this story is pure, unadulterated evil.

For the Pop-Up Book Fans

600 Black Spots By David A. Carter This is a really great book for lovers of the pop-up book and modern, abstract art alike.  You could spend hours with your child counting the many spots as well delighting over the intricate cut-outs and folds, it is an amazingly well-made made work of art.  This is probably no the book to give to a toddler who will most likely tear it up in no time.  But for the older kid who enjoys a visual puzzle and some whimsical poetry, it is a lot of fun.  Carter is also the author of Blue 2 and One Red Dot, also pop-ups.  His work is worth checking out and a great gift idea for the holidays.

Barbie Fashions for Real Women

I couldn't believe the news when I heard that Vera Wang will be designing a wedding dress for Barbie- and for humans! How cool is that? Mattel is going all out next year for Barbie's 50th birthday, by enlisting the help of 50 designers to create real fashions for dolls and humans alike. The legendary and chic, wedding dress designer Vera Wang has signed up to help celebrate the fashionista's big day. Another designer who has confirmed his participation is the über hip Jeremy Scott, whose fashions have been worn by the likes of Madonna, Cameron Diaz, and even Bjork(no, he is not responsible for that sad spectacle of a dress she wore to the Oscars in 01). Mattel will also be releasing a make-up line inspired by Barbie. This just goes to show how Barbie is an icon of fashion. Who wouldn't want to dress the "It" girl of the last fifty years?
