Starbucks sued for age discrimination

A 56-year-old Maine woman is suing Starbucks for discrimination, claiming her several applications to work as a barista were turned down due to her age. The plaintiff is asking for over $300,000 from the coffee giant. Unless a settlement is reached, the case will go to court in February. According to the woman's lawyer, the manager of the store who refused to hire her lied about why she wasn't hired and failed to hire any new employee over 30 during the period the plaintiff applied. For their own part, Starbucks claims that she wasn't hired for other reasons, including her unpleasant behavior and error-filled application. My guess would be that this woman was not hired simply because she isn't a good candidate (after all, Starbucks baristas are usually so pleasant!), and the lawsuit has no basis. I'm guessing the vast majority of starbucks applicants are under 30, which could probably help explain why that particular store only hired from that demographic. But what do you think? Is Starbucks ageist? Has anyone out there had a bad hiring experience with Starbucks?

Faroe Island Whale Massacre

Every year in the Faroe Islands, a commonwealth of Denmark, close to 2,000 pilot whales are rounded up near the shore where they come for feeding and then they are brutally slaughtered and eaten.  It is a gruesome spectacle of human cruelty what is done on the shores of this island. The Faroese people defend themselves by saying that this is a tradition that dates back to the 16th century, and a practice that has helped the people survive the harsh winters.

The whale meat is not sold but divided among the community.  The salughtering has become more intense since the collapse of the fishing industry in the region.  They say they need to continue this barbaric butchering of whales or the community will starve.

In an ironic twist, chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands are recommending that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption because they are toxic.  Apparently the whale meat contains too much mercurey, as well as high levels of PCBs and DDT derivatives, all unsafe for humans. According to this article, research on the impact of the pollutants on the Faroese people, has shown that mercury especially has caused lasting damage.  Such as damage to fetal neaural development, high blood pressure, and impaired immunity in children, as well as increased rates of Parkinson's disease, circulatory problems, and possibly infertility in adults.

This is an example of the unsustainable lifestyles people have adopted throughout the ages in order to survive.  It is now time for the Faorese people to reconsider their practices and possibly adopt a new way of life.  One that respects the animals in the ocean, and one that will not put themselves at the risk of extinction from consuming poisoned wildlife.

Minnesota State Senate Race, Still Counting

The five member state Canvassing Board denied a request by Al Franken's campaign to reconsider absentee ballots it claims were excluded from the initial vote count because of technicalities or administrative errors.  Republican Sen. Norm Coleman's campaign said the board lacked power to revisit those votes.  Statewide, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie estimated 12,000 absentee ballots were rejected for various reasons.  Franken entered the recount trailing Coleman by 215 votes out of 2.9 million ballots.  About 80 percent have been counted with Coleman still in the lead.  However, there are still about 3,600 ballots that both campaigns have challenged that could determine the outcaome of this long, drawn-out race.  Read more here.

Holiday gift idea--champagne savers

Hope everyone had a delicious turkey and champagne-filled Thanksgiving yesterday! Now that it's officially the holiday season, I know many of us are searching for those perfect gifts and this one I ran across on The Gift Corner blog looks like a winner! Called Champagne Savers, this beautiful leaf-shaped utensil helps keep opened, refrigerated bottles of champagne fresh for up to two days. This is an awesome accessory for anyone who wants to keep leftover champagne drinkable (though I must admit, I never usually have any extra!). These beauties run about $200-350, and can be purchased at Mary's Garden and Neiman Marcus.
