Patience is a Virtue

Friendly house pets who can at times be too smart for their own good have found a place in my heart as well as my home. Or better put, I have found a place in their house. Primarily indoor cats, they get full access to every nook and cranny. The shy one of the two sisters rarely causes any disturbance, but the other one is a whole different story.
Patience, not named for her amount of patience, but to remind us as her caregivers to be patient every time we have to yell at misbehavior. Spoiled as she is, boredom comes easily for her. My hair ties get used for chew toys and hunting practice. In addition to my hair ties, I have a horrible habit of twisting my hair around my fingers. I do this with out realizing it while watching TV or just spacing out. My sweet kitty is currently in the process of helping me break this habit. While I twirl my hair comfy as can be on the couch Patience is somewhere near watching and waiting. Crouched in a corner doing the famous butt wiggle and shoulder roll, she pounces. Dead on with her aim she snaps me out of my daze and comfort zone.
Our freshly worn work shoes solely exist for her very strange foot fetish. She will spend hours with her paws reaching as far as they can into any shoe. The more of her body she can fit inside the better. Patience quickly turns into psycho kitty if you dare to take her shoes away while getting her fix. I have also found what eats the socks after put in the dryer. It is not a sock monster; it's my cat. Socks cannot be left out in the open. Clean or dirty, it doesn't matter. The only time you will ever even hear that cat meow is if she has a sock in her mouth. Coming home from any where, socks are strewn all over the house.
Now I have never considered myself to be computer illiterate nor do I claim super powers on the keyboard. Patience has a special ability to make even an IT whiz stumble in confusion. Using a computer to work from home it is almost always on. Now I know that cats like to lay on warm objects and having a laptop on through the day will make for a prime napping spot if left unattended. However, this cat doesn't just sleep on the keyboard of the computer but walks across it. Her tiny little paws know exactly which keys to hit so my computer is totally unrecognizable. I get up to go to the bathroom and I come back to my laptop yelling at me in Mandarin Chinese and all my files are on lock down.
Still, every night I welcome her as she nuzzles, head butts and the proceeds to curl up at the foot of my bed or in the crook of my knees with her sister. Unknowingly she warms my feet and deters the dog from coming up to join us to make his attempt at pushing me out of the bed. Patience is a virtue and my cat has been a great teacher and major contributor to this virtue practiced regularly.

Competition For Sochi 2014 Flag Handover

Sochi will be soliciting ideas for the flag handover ceremonies for the 2014 Olympic Games. The nationwide competition is to find the best ideas for the handover of the Olympic and Paralympic flags to Sochi during the Vancouver 2010 Closing Ceremony.

The Closing Ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games consists of two key sections, according to a press release.  The first is the official protocol which is regulated by the International Olympic Committee(IOC).  Vancouver's mayor will return the flag to the IOC president who will then pass it on to the mayor of Sochi. This will be followed by a performance during which Sochi 2014 will put on a ten-minute display showcasing the host city to the Olympic Movement.

The Sochi 2014 competition will decide this section of the ceremonies. "Given Russia's passion for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, we wanted to give everybody the opportunity to participate in the planning of these key ceremonies.  The flag handover sections can have a significant impact on perceptions of the Sochi Games between 2010 and 2014.  This competition offers us the best means of consulting with the Russian people on presenting our nation to the world," said Dmitry Chernyshenko, the President and CEO of the Sochi 2014.

The closing date for entries is December 25.

Cocteau Twins

Formed in Grangemouth, Scotland in the early 1980's, The Cocteau Twins have been nothing short of pioneers in the world of modern music. Countless bands, from My Bloody Valentine to Slowdive and Lush, are direct descendants from the unique soundscapes of the Twins' near two-decade career. The founding members of The Cocteau Twins were vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie. After a few releases, Heggie split in 1983 to join Lowlife. A year later, Fraser and Guthrie picked up Simon Raymonde, completing what would be the principle lineup for the band until they closed up shop in 1998. What's so special about this band? Maybe this is just a fan talking, but without The Twins pop music as we know it today wouldn't exist. Without Liz Fraser's enchanting, near-alien vocals, nobody would be listening to Bjork after Post and Sigur Ros would be stuck with conventional lyrics. Robin Guthrie single-handedly reinvented the guitar as an instrument, steering away from riff-driven rock in favor of creating completely new sounds aided by new technology. Despite all the weirdness, The Cocteau Twins still sound like pop music, they're just at the boundaries of what most would consider pop. Of course, you wouldn't know this listening to the band's first couple albums. 1982's Garlands and half of Head Over Heals and Treasure from '83 and '84 respectively sound like murky derivations of Cure and Bauhaus inspired goth. Fraser's abstract approach to singing and lyrics helped the band stand out, but honestly, had The Twins chosen a male front with a deep, scratchy voice it's not likely we would have anything to talk about today. The Cocteau Twins that fans came to know and love for the next decade appeared in full force on the 1986 LP Victorialand. This is the album in which Robin Guthrie finally devoted more than one or two tracks to the crystaline strings found in earlier tracks like "Pearly Dewdrops Drops". So often, music that courts the term "experimental" does so to cover up for darkness or dissonance. From 1986 on, The Twins managed to be experimental and beautiful at the same time. After cultivating this solid sound for two albums and plenty of touring, The Cocteau Twins used the early 1990's to dip a toe in the accessible end of the pop music pool. Flush with backing from Capitol Records to handle US distribution but retaining the artistic freedom provided by their international (and original) label, 4AD, The Twins churned out Heaven or Las Vegas in 1990. They had a hit single with "Iceblink Luck" as well as the title track. C',width:'100',height:'100'" width="100" height="100" align="" />ompared to the band's earlier sound, Heaven or Las Vegas seems more than halfway to the MTV standard for the decade. Fraser's vocals on the album are occasionally intelligable, while Guthrie and Raymonde composed songs with a more straightforward structure. Call it what you will, but in retrospect it was a nice change. The band spent the better part of the 1980's doing their own thing. Continuing on the path of obliqueness wouldn't have been genuine, it would have been stagnation. After Heaven or Las Vegas The Twins' output slowed. They only put out two unique studio albums, Four Calender Cafe in 1993 and Milk and Kisses in 1996. The rest of the decade saw a smattering of compilations and live recordings. Cite what you will about any unpleasant business with Mercury Records or the background drama of Fraser's and Guthrie's romance, 15 years of steady production is unusual for any band. These days, the former Cocteau Twins are still involved in music by way of their solo careers and the label formed by the band at the end of their run, Bella Union. Aside from being intensely enjoyable on their own, The Cocteau Twins essentially invented a genre of pop while at the same time standing as the paragon band of that genre. It's been called plenty of things over the past two decades; Shoegaze, dream-pop, etc. There are even some very interesting new bands embracing the style, most notably Detroit's Ether Aura and The Daysleepers out of New York. But if you're looking to start at the beginning, jump back 25 years to the point of invention in Liz Fraser's dynamic pipes and Robin Guthrie's frontiersman fingers.

Hubble Repairs: Servicing Mission 4

The Hubble Space Telescope was deliberately designed to allow upgrades via servicing missions while the telescope remains in orbit. The plan was for shuttle missions to carry upgrades, new equipment and tools for repair and dock near the telescope, near enough that astronauts can repair and upgrade the telescope while it remains in orbit. This has worked extremely well. The current repair and upgrade cycle hit a glitch in October, but the next mission, Servicing Mission 4 (SM4), should be the last in the current upgrade cycle. This time the shuttle will carry astronauts. When the shuttle is about 200 feet from Hubble, Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland will command the Hubble telescope to execute a roll and turn that will position it so that astronauts can use the shuttle's robotic arm to grapple Hubble and bring it in to dock in the shuttle's cargo bay. Next, in a series of five spacewalks, each lasting several hours., astronauts in teams of two will install two new instruments, repair two non functioning instruments, and replace other components. These upgrades and repairs should keep the telescope functioning into 2014. Of the various upgrades to be installed, the one I'm most excited about is the Wide Field Camera 3. WFC3 sees three different kinds of light: near-ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared, though each "shot" needs to be planned ahead of time since each spectrum requires different commands. The new camera's range and sensitivity are much greater than the current camera, with a larger field of view and better resolution. In addition, astronauts will swap out COSTAR, the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement installed during the very first repair mission to correct for flaws in Hubble's mirror, for the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). COS sees in ultraviolet light and will improve Hubble's ultraviolet sensitivity at least 10 times, and up to 70 times when observing extremely faint object. And all six of Hubble's batteries, at 125 lbs each, will be replaced with upgraded, more efficient versions. In addition, the outside of Hubble will be covered in new, improved insulating blankets. In the meantime, the image above is a shot from Hubble's recently repaired Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2, the one that's about to be upgraded in early 2009), showing a pair of gravitationally interacting galaxies called Arp 147. As the Hubble site explains:
The two galaxies happen to be oriented so that they appear to mark the number 10. The left-most galaxy, or the "one" in this image, is relatively undisturbed apart from a smooth ring of starlight. It appears nearly on edge to our line of sight. The right- most galaxy, resembling a "zero," exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation.
The blue ring was likely formed after the galaxy on the left passed through the galaxy on the right, with the gravitational forces that resulted creating a ring of higher density at the point of impact. As this dense material collided with outer material inward from the gravitational pull of the two galaxies, the resulting shocks and dense gas that were produced, spawned star formation. If you look at the lower left of the blue ring you can see a dusty reddish knot that probably marks the site of the original nucleus of the galaxy that was hit. in the initial collision. As you look at that stunning image (click it to see the larger original) keep in mind that that was taken with the old camera. Just imagine what we'll see next year!

Red Beer

I learned to drink beer in Britain. At first, on being informed that I didn't care for beer, hospitable hosts offered me Shandy, a vile concoction of beer combined with lemonade or currant juice, or even soda. Shandy was so awful that when a local at the pub coaxed me into trying the local brew, on the grounds that it was made on the premises, I did. It was a fairly typical British ale, but nothing like the canned beer I'd cautiously sipped in New Hampshire. I've never looked back since then, though I've diligently avoided Shandy, and have assiduously pursued microbrews and beer on tap. A few months ago a friend talked me into trying Red Beer; not the sort of Red Beer that's made by using a special selection of malts or a specially roasted malt as part of the mash, but the sort that's made by adding a few ounces of tomato juice to a good lager. After obtaining a bottle of brew, stash it in the refrigerator to chill; Red beer is a dish best served cold. You'll want to chill the beer glass in the freezer so that it's good and frosty, and do the same with the Tomato juice; a half hour or so should do it. Pour a couple of ounces of the Tomato juice into the chilled beer glass, add a sprinkle of salt, then add the bottle of lager chilled from the fridge. I'm fond of using tomato juice that's slightly spicy, or adding just a dash of Tabasco. Some aficionados add a dash of cayenne, or use celery salt instead of table salt. Don't cheap out on the tomato juice, or use one with added sugar or corn syrup; you'll regret it. The beer does make a difference; I prefer lager for Red beer (I'm especially partial to Kona's Longboard Lager), but I note that others suggest any pale ale will do. And don't believe those who tell you to use a cheap beer you wouldn't ordinarily drink. The beer in Red beer, like the wine you cook with, should be one you'd be happy to drink on its own. Red beer is nothing like shandy, at all; in fact red beer is quite lovely, especially with slightly spicy food, like chili, or pizza. It's best when there are small ice crystals in the tomato juice. I don't know, but I deeply suspect that red beer was inspired as a morning after ritual, or possibly, in beer envy of the Bloody Mary. Another friend from the deep south told me that Red beer there means just a healthy dash of Tabasco added to a glass of beer, specifically as a hangover remedy. I'd be interested if anyone can shed some light on Red beer's origins.
