We were so eager to ask whether we could . . .
... we didn't bother to ask whether we should. - Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park

Awesome site. What's the penalty for a philosophical interlude? :- )
I'll brave it, amigos ... there's a high correlation (> 0.80, I'd say) between interest in astronomy and interest in science fiction. The SETI folks are interested in astronomy, it would seem. The Hubble Telescope is relevant to those perplexed by The Great Silence.
If philosophy ain't your thang, please feel free to scroll past. If it is, here's my $0.02...

"Thou shalt not make a machine in the image of man" - Frank Herbert, Dune series. (Not that I think Sagan's teleporter is in the image of man, y'understand.)This is 135 degrees off the subject, but it is what I think about when thinking about scientific advancement. There is a passage in Genesis 11 which most of you would regard as mythical, as I used to, but it is a remarkable -comment- on the human condition. The underlying premise is both (1) one that I hadn't thought of, and (2) one that I find quite profound.
Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. Gen 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. Gen 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. Gen 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Gen 11:5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. Gen 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Gen 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Gen 11:8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.In other words, if the entire human race communicates together, technology will explode, so let us retard the communication for a millenium or five, so we have time for some other things here first. (It doesn't make any sense to read the author as simply saying, "they will build real large structures if they're not separated." The author was familiar with the pyramids of Egypt, after the division into nations.) With the advent of global communications in the 20th century — telegraph, telephone, the internet — scientific advancement truly has become cross-cultural, and the techno growth has become terrifyingly exponential. This is precisely the connection that Genesis 11 foresaw: greater synergy leads to greater discovery. That's kind of eerie, if you ask me, but you don't have to agree to see the point. In 100 years, what is the cloning situation going to be? Will babies be engineered? Will we have a GATTACA-style society at some point, in which misfits become second-class citizens, and then engineered against? From a Bible-as-literature (nonbelieving) standpoint, the minimums there are, that at least 250 BC (the Septuagint, which draws the boundary for Old Testament construction dates) there is a statement by God that He has an interest in retarding technological development. And a fascinating, implied (apparent) prediction that if/when scientific research were shared globally, that progress would be infinite. Of course, at the time Genesis was written, the author was familiar with Egypt's scientific accomplishments. It's not like he's shooting in the dark. …………………………. Who knows. But the point is :- ) as knowledge is shared, scientists kick the soccer ball down the field a lot quicker. And now the cat is out of the bag — it's just a question of a tighter computer chip, a better AI algorithm, a slicker virtual interface… time travel, into the future, is quite possible now. Where is physics going? Do we want to go there? In 200 years, when AI has exploded and robots are better at everything than we are, science will truly look like magic. It was 50 years between the first vacuum-tube computer, and a computer the size of a library book, who can beat the world champ at chess. It was what, 70 years between the first 800-foot airplane flight, and walking on the moon. We have the technology to go to Alpha Centauri now, if we wanted to (continual acceleration until halfway there). 200 years isn't a nanosecond in galactic terms, yet in 200 years, AI will dominate the planet. What about in 2 million years? It is incomprehensible in the literal sense of the word. That is why Enrico Fermi declared that there are no aliens in the galaxy. They would have to have been here by now, since galactic colonization can't possibly require any more than 5 million years from the first space satellite. Yet the radar dishes hear nothing but a dead silence, no EMP beacons, no nothing. Infinite technology is one of the best philosophy gardens :- ) …………………………… Better medicine has its obvious advantages. Techno conveniences are wonderful, though mostly what they do is save us time. Sociologists have found that we use this techno leisure time to … watch TV, or to surf the internet. My grandma chatted with her friends as she picked a lot of cotton. We turn on CSI and watch the monitor. ;- ) For entertainment, she played a lot of outdoor games with her friends. My son plays a lot of Zelda: Twilight Princess by himself. Who's to say which life is preferable? …………………………… Good stuff, jemanji
Research Disclosed About My Ancestry
Friday, December 5th
6:30pm
Dear Diary,
Well, the information that traces my family back to the slavery days has finally come out. Barack’s campaign hired genealogists to research my family’s roots, as if to confirm that he is somehow connected to the plights of millions of African Americans’ ancestors. It’s fine. I understand why he had to do it. But I almost wish I could have found out this information outside of the political arena. It’s so personal. I appreciated that they kept this information under wraps for a bit so I could process the information. It’s so sensitive that I would have been insulted if it had just been reported like regular news.
But I’m glad that it is being reported, because we certainly can’t hide from our past. And, knowing how far my family has come is quite an honor. After all, my great-great grandfather was born as a slave – not a free man. He would never have imagined, in his wildest dreams that his great-great granddaughter would be the First Lady. This truly reinforces how far African-Americans have come, though I certainly don’t think the battle for equality is over. We may be legally “equal,” but until the income gap, the achievement gap, and the gap in the legal system between white and black Americans close, we must continue to fight for equality.
It’s hard to imagine that I’m about to live in a home partially built by slaves, but I think that recognizing such honors their lives. And in no way can we ever forget that shameful chapter of American history.
Yours always,
Michelle
New Position in the Office of the Vice President
Friday, December 5th
6:30pm
Dear Diary,
Can’t believe this economy. Bush has left our country (and the rest of the world) a mess, and go figure – we have to clean up after him. I do think it was wrong of him and the economists not to announce that we entered the recession last December. It wasn’t fair to the people to not inform them that they were about to hit hard times, since they could have at least planned for it. Regardless, I feel that it’s my responsibility to help do something about it.
So, I’ve decided to help Barack with his Economic Recovery Plan by creating a new position within my office: Chief Economist and Economic Policy Advisor. I’ve named Jared Bernstein to fill this position for many reasons. He’s worked with a variety of domestic and international economic policies, and he’s dedicated to helping middle class families. Finally, for the first time in eight long years, we’ll have people in the White House who are committed to helping the middle class.
And I’m on the forefront of the action. I realized that Barack is probably never going to make a speech addressing my duties, so I’m taking this on myself. I’m going to define my own office and exactly what I’m going to do as Vice President. And while I won’t be a Dick Cheney, I’m certainly going to shake things up and bring the change we need to turn this country around. Whew, this diary entry sounds like a campaign speech. But I’m feeling really good about having Bernstein on my team, and I think he can help Barack and myself to turn around this recession.
Until next time,
Joe the Veep
St. Nick's Open House Woodinville Wine Country
This weekend (Dec 6-7) over 30 wineries in Woodinville will participate in the St. Nick's Open House! For a $50 ticket (or $35 for Sunday only, tickets available only online at the Woodinville Wine homepage), patrons will be invited to taste and of course purchase wine at any of the open wineries. Many of the wineries involved are not generally open to the public, so this is a special opportunity indeed.
List of the participating wineries can be found here.
Several new wines will be introduced at this event, including Sommelier David LeClaire's (founder of Seattle Uncorked) "Big Smooth," a blend of Syrah and cabernet Sauvignon. I was also at Matthews Cellars yesterday and heard they are releasing a new wine; I haven't been able to come up with additional details but Matthews consistently produces quality wine, so I'm sure it will be well worth checking out.
UPDATE: apparently Sunday only tickets are sold out! Looks like everyone else will have to commit to two days of wine tasting, I'm sure no one is disapointed! And for all of you who attend, please send back any reviews/comments/complaints/gossip etc. Here is one blogger's review of last year's event to get you all started. Happy tasting!
How To Help Your Poor Sport
Having a poor sport in the house can put a damper on the whole household when it comes to family time and play dates with friends. Everyone loves to win and the feeling of satisfaction that comes with it. Winning helps to build children's self esteem but loosing teaches children lessons in life that are equally important. Here are some tips to help our child learn to drop the poor sport attitude.
1. Teach your child by example. While most childhood games are easy to any adult to win, loose on purpose. Congratulate your child on their win but don't make a huge deal out of it. Make it a point to let your child know that you have lost and how much it doesn't really matter. You could say something like "Bummer, I lost. Oh well, maybe next time I'll win." If they have any siblings, have them join in and do the same. Offer to play the game again after loosing.
After your second or third intentional loss, go ahead and win one. Don't gloat and boast about winning. Instead act amazed that you were even able to win against them. Start this conversation the second the game is over. Don't give your child a chance to be a poor sport. Tell your child what a good competitor they were. Complement and praise our child's game playing abilities rather than keeping the focus on winning and loosing. Remember to also give praise when they do display good sportsmanship rather than the poor sport routine.
2. In combination with teaching through hands on examples, refuse to play the game with them. If they can't drop the attitude and poor sport mindset then why should they be rewarded. Games and toys are a privilege, not a right or necessity. Your children will live even if the can't play their favorite game system for a day or two.
3. Set some house rules. It is a given that any game played will have a winner or looser. Let you child know that anyone that looses at a game and can't be a good sport will loose their privilege of having the game or have to go take a time out. You can decide what is best for your child. Also set guidelines for the winner. Excessive gloating about a win is not good sportsmanship either and can prompt the looser into an instant melt down. Neither behavior is acceptable or appropriate and go hand in hand with each other.
Some parents tend to forget that their children are not pre-programed. If you don't teach your children or give them the proper learning tools, they will not understand that it is not okay to throw a tantrum when loosing at something. Although it's okay to not be happy with an end result, they also need to be taught how to properly express those feelings. Poor sports will have a difficult time with keeping friendships, participating in sports and even in the classroom. As your child gets older, these are important life tools that they will need to possess for success.

Transmission 401 - The Variants of Phillippians 1-2
This article lists all 8 variants of Phillippians 1-2 as documented in "The Greek New Testament," published by United Bible Societies.
This reference work gives you the New Testament in the original Greek. If you're worried that 1 Tim. 3 might be translated wrong, when it says that to be an elder, one must have faithful children, then you can read it for yourself in the original Greek. (I did. That's what it says.)
The New Testament is based on more than 35,000 ancient manuscripts and manuscript fragments, as well as thousands of letters written back-and-forth between 2nd- and 3rd-century Christians, as well as other sources. The spiderweb of ancient literature that confirms the original content of the New Testament is colossal.
It is interesting to meditate on the difference between the NT manuscript situation, and that of the Book of Mormon.
.............
In reviewing these 8 variants of Phillippians -- those places in the book wherein the manuscripts aren't quite agreed -- you can get a feel for just how solidly the New Testament has been handed down over the years.
In every verse not mentioned below, the ancient manuscripts show NO significant variance from one MS to another.
As well, you can meditate on the difficulty of translating these simple NT words into English, or Spanish, or any language. There is nothing that is complicated about rendering these simple words in a second language.
.............
Variant 1
NT: Phi 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
Possible alternate from certain manuscripts: Phi 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise *of Christ.*
Comment: this is the only variant in Phillippians which has any significant doctrinal interest. The likelihood of the variant is very low, according to the authors of "The Greek New Testament." "of God" is the correct reading. Still, we can see how minor the variation is.
..................
Variant 2
NT: Phi 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Possible alternate: Phi 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word *of God* without fear.
Possible alternate 2: Phi 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word *of the Lord* without fear.
Comment: it makes absolutely no difference which reading is correct. All are consistent with other NT passages.
..................
Variant 3
NT: Phi 2:2 Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, the one thing minding.
Possible alternate: Phi 2:2 Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, the *same* thing minding.
Comment: a trivial variation.
..................
Variant 4
NT: Phi 2:4 Let not each one (singular) consider his own things, but every man also the things of others.
Possible alternate: Phi 2:4 Let not each one (plural) consider his own things, but every man also the things of others.
Comment: a trivial variation.
..................
Variant 5
NT: Phi 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Possible alternate: Phi 2:5 *Now* let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Comment: a trivial variation. "Now" would connect the idea slightly more strongly with the idea of 2:1-4 -- that is, the motivations listed in 2:1-4 would lead into the example of Jesus in 2:5ff. This is true in any case.
..................
Variant 6
NT: Phi 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Possible alternate: Phi 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not *as* in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Comment: two letters' difference. Either idea would be sound and consistent with the NT.
..................
Variant 7
NT: Phi 2:26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
Possible alternate: Phi 2:26 For he longed *to see* you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
Comment: no material difference.
..................
Variant 8
NT: Phi 2:30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
Possible alternate: Phi 2:30 Because for the work of *the Lord* he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
Comment: no material difference.

Discussing the transmission and the translation of the Bible in abstract terms leads nowhere. Actually viewing the nuts and bolts of the literary work is enlightening.

Transmission 401 - The Variants of Phillippians 3-4
For the sake of completeness, here are the rest of the variants in the entire book of Phillippians, following those variants listed in this article.
Those who are not acquainted with the field of transmission might wonder, "Hey, did some of those old manuscripts have Phil. 4:13 reading something like, 'And UFO's will put crop circles in England'?"
Notice rather how negligible *all* these variants are in their impact on the meaning. Ancient copyists were very, very careful with scrolls that they believed to be sacred. Their accuracy in transmission, across 2,000 years, is simply incredible.
...............
Variant 9
NT: Phi 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship in the spirit of God, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Possible alternate: Phi 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship *God in the spirit*, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Comment: the text contains the idea “we worship via the Spirit’s help,” as in Rom. 8:5, 26; the alternate contains the idea of Jn. 4:4. Both are consistent with the rest of the NT.
..................
Variant 10
NT: Phi 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Possible alternate: Phi 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either *had been approved* or were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Comment: No material difference; the phrase “had been approved” is in few early MSS and the reading of the text is in little doubt, according to the UBS scholars.
...................
Variant 11
NT: Phi 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Possible alternate: Phi 3:13 Brethren, I count *in this way* myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Comment: the phrase “in this way” appears in a number of early manuscripts and the final text is relatively ambiguous.
...................
Variant 12
NT: Phi 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule.
Possible alternate: Phi 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, *let us mind the same thing.*
Comment: the phrase “let us mind the same thing” is in few early MSS and the reading of the text is in little doubt. “Let us mind the same thing” would be exactly the doctrine of Phil. 2:1-4 in any case.
...................
Variant 13
NT: Phi 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Possible alternate: Phi 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto *himself.*
Comment: Some MSS have heautos instead of autos. Both mean “Himself,” though autos is a more versatile word.
...................
Variant 14
NT: Phi 4:3 And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.
Possible alternate: Phi 4:3 And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with *my fellow laborers and the rest*, whose names are in the book of life.
Comment: No material difference and the alternate reading is unlikely in any case.
...................
Variant 15
NT: Phi 4:16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto the need for me.
Possible alternate: Phi 4:16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again the need *of* me.
...................
Variant 16
NT: Phi 4:23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
Possible alternate: Phi 4:23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. *Amen.*
Comment: No material difference.
