Police Power Abuse Supported by Taxpayer Dollars

When an officer goes over the line, we get to foot the bill

Problems with police abusing their authority are nothing new, though they frequently go unknown to the public.  Those within the force often band together in order to cover their crimes, seeing a little abuse as par for the course.  Sometimes they get overlooked due to lack of evidence, though this is becoming less of a problem as video cameras are attached to police cars and carried by virtually every citizen within their cell phones.  But when these crimes are found out, they often lead to lawsuits.  And these lawsuits, when successful, come out of the taxpayers’ pockets.

One person did a study of a single police force, that of the city of Chicago, and ended up with some very interesting results.  As it turns out, this one police force alone paid out more than $45 million in misconduct lawsuits over the course of the last three years.  But what makes it even more interesting, and sad as well, is that around one percent of officers account for one-quarter of all this money.

Repeat offenders are the key to this discovered mathematical equation, as that one percent encompasses only those who are known to have stepped over the line on multiple occasions.  So why are these cops allowed to continue after they’ve proven that they are not worthy of the public’s trust?  It’s a double whammy when those with little self-control can abuse citizens and then effectively charge them for that “privilege”.

This atrocity is further put into perspective when you realize that the majority of police misconduct cases never make it to trial.  What would happen if the justice system were more efficient in regards to punishing rogue officers?  What would the bill be then?

If we’re not willing to sack these repeat offenders, then this problem is never going to end.  They will continue to do exactly what they want and leave accountability up to taxpayers.  Without more oversight, our police departments may very well find themselves broke before too long.

YouTube Nation - Fan Tribute

Creative fans paying homage to the things that they love

Most of the time when someone enjoys a television show or a movie, they just watch it a lot, maybe spam their Facebook page with quotes and pictures and perhaps bug people all day long, trying to talk to anyone at all that loves the artwork as much as they do.  But others are more creative in showing their devotion and YouTube combined with the prevalence of video camera technology just makes it easier and easier to put together your own home presentation.

Some choose to remake old properties, either shot-by-shot or with a little bit of creative work thrown in.  Others make tributes to their beloved television shows and movies, taking part in the creative process and expanding upon a story that has already touched them.  Sometimes, these videos are quite amusing and other times they can be closer to train wrecks.  This week I decided that I’d look to the ones that I thought were well made, or at least made with good intentions.

The first of these involves remakes of 10 introductions to television shows.  Some of these you will no doubt recognize, though some may leave you drawing a blank unless you were born in the 80s or happened to catch the reruns.  Most of them are conveniently placed next to the original intros so that you can see the…er, “improvements”.

Top 10 TV show intros remade by fans

The next is a creative project by some fans of the widely popular television show Doctor Who.  They apparently decided to make a fan film detailing one of the Doctor’s adventures.  You probably won’t recognize this particular incarnation of the Doctor, however, as they made no attempts to imitate someone already existing.  In fact, this dude has some seriously wacky hair, even for a Doctor.

Doctor Who: The Mystery of Rorrim

The last one is a true masterpiece of creativity.  One group got together and decided to remake the entire Star Wars Episode IV film.  But they didn’t do it themselves.  Instead, they made it into a creative project that involved hundreds of fans.  Each 15 seconds of film time was handed out to volunteers who then made their own version of the film’s events.  These use many different styles, from live-action to animation to stop-motion, and run the gambit from professional looking to some guy in his backyard with a paper C-3PO mask on his face.  The end result is 2 hours of 15 second clips that make up the entire flick and a seriously fun watch.  If you have the time, check this out.  If you don’t have the time, make the time!  No Star Wars fan should live their life without viewing this work of genius.

Star Wars Uncut: Director's Cut

So if you love someone else’s work of art, why not create your own to show them how much you care?  Or you could put something together just because you’re bored and happen to have a camera nearby.  Either way, make sure to post it on YouTube so that the whole world can experience your obsession and perhaps get a laugh or two out of it.

The Craigslist Files #174 - Pet Lovers

The things people do for their pets

Most people love their pets, right?  I mean, why else would they give these little freeloaders a home, providing them with food and water and toys and a place to sleep and all for free?  Some people, however, love their pets way more than others do.  And no, I’m not talking about an intimate act that is illegal in most parts of the country.  I’m referring to pet owners taking extra time and making an extra effort to ensure that their furry friends are well taken care of, regardless of what they need.

If you have some “special” pet needs, there is one place that may be able to help you, and that is, as the title of this post suggests, Craigslist.

This week, I’ve put together a few of the more interesting pet-related Craigslist posts that I could find.  Some are looking for simple things, while others are looking for services more… unique.  And still others are posting simply to let the world know exactly how much they love their lil’ buddy.

The first post is a true pet lover.  He/she loves their dog so much that they’re looking to expand the pet-loving experience by using the potentially world-ending power of controversial science.  Either that or they’re looking to sell off the copies and make a quick buck.

NEED MAD SCIENTIST TO CLONE DOG

I need a mad scientist to clone a dog. It is the best dog in the universe and there should be 2 or more if it in existence. I have 60 dollars. Thank you. NO FLAKES
$50 Bonus if you can make it speak English and Japanese.

The next one involves a rabbit that is obviously a bit spoiled.  But I guess if you’re trying to get something for free, you can pretty much let the rabbit do whatever it wants without worrying that it will break your wallet.

wiggles is lookin 4 a loveseat

she ate her others all gone:(
wiggles has no cash shes just looking for a new chew toy

This third post is a serious matter, as a man attempts to make a life-changing decision regarding his pet.  His girlfriend seems to have taken a disliking to his dog and demands that it be gone, but the man is cleverer than that.  He comes up with a solution that works for both him and his lovable canine companion.

Girlfriend says, my lab must go

New girlfriend is not a fan of my 8 year old lab, and says i need to make a craigslist add to find him a good home.....so here you go honey
Free to good home
1 jealous nagging dog hating girlfriend
make an offer or look in the free section if she keeps it up and gets kicked to the curb

And finally, something a little different.  It’s the touching story of a human being who was brought together with their animal in a random way and just wanted to tell the world about it.  Warning: if you tear up easily you might want to skip this one.

Shadow Kitty - Thank You - m4w

Dear whoever left me "Shadow",
I work in public accounting and lead a pretty miserable life. We work horrible hours and I have almost no time to do anything else in life. One day (December 1st, 2009) after leaving work at 1am, upon heading to the parking lot, I noticed a box in front of my silver bmw. Scared of what was inside, I imagined it to be either a) a bomb, or b) full of baby kittens. Hesitantly, I gently tapped the box with my foot, nudging it knowing the chance of it being a bomb was pretty low. The box felt light - too light to be a box of kittens. In fact, no one meowed when it shook. So I took an even greater risk and peeked inside. I see a tiny baby kitten sitting inside with an empty water dish, soft pillow and warm blanket. Never having thought I would own a cat, I was about to leave the kitten there for someone else to find. However, it was approximately 35 degrees outside and with no food or water, the kitten would surely struggle through the night. So I placed the large box in my passenger seat and brought the kitten home with me.
The tiniest cat I have ever seen, she has the softest black fur, sweetest face and gentlest personality. On the box, in a child's handwriting an index card was scotch-taped to the side saying "Cat's home" and written on the box was "Shadow". Whatever the circumstances were, since you packed the box with the water dish, pillow and blanket, I can only imagine how much you wanted her to have a good home. This note is a simple thank you, and letting you know she has a wonderful home now and she has brought so much joy into my miserable life. Things are starting to look up, and I will be making life changes soon and hope to find new employment. As far as I know, an angel left Shadow for me that night.

So once again Craigslist has proven to us how useful it can be, and this time to both man and beast.  If you happen to have some pet needs that are currently going unaddressed or just want to tell people how freakin’ awesome your pet is, type up something and post it up on CL for all the world to see.  Your animal may not thank you (most of them are, I have found, quite ungrateful creatures), but you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you are a good pet owner.

Dunkin Donuts Winter Seasonal Blends Have Arrived

Mocha Mint, Gingerbread Cookie and Pumpkin Spice. In short, dessert in a mug.

Along with the brisk air and snowball fights the winter months bring glittering snowy landscapes and, best of all, Dunkin Donuts' seasonal blends. Mmmmm...I don't know about you, but I look forward to these flavors all year long.

This year, Dunkin Donuts is offering three delicious winter coffee blends: Gingerbread Cookie, Pumpkin Spice and Mocha Mint.

The Gingerbread Cookie blend is a spicy treat that deliciously echoes its smiley faced cookie counterpart. The flavor is ever present, but not overpowering.

The Pumpkin Spice blend is amazing. It's got that rich, comforting flavor that keeps pumpkin pie on every holiday dessert menu. In fact, a cup of this coffee is dessert in itself.

The Mocha Mint blend is smooth and minty with a tantalizing hint of chocolatey goodness. If I could only have one blend of coffee ever again, it would be this one. The balance between the flavors is perfection and every sip is a treat.

Each blend is so rich and flavorful, I enjoy them both hot and cold. I always make full pots of coffee, knowing there will be some left over that I can chill for an iced treat later on. Why pay $5 for a cup of iced coffee at a corner cafe when I have something better at home.

I'm a huge fan of Dunkin Donuts' coffee blends, and their winter collection is to die for. The flavor is sensational and makes the cold, blustery days of the season seem to melt away. Dunkin Donuts coffee can be found at retailers nationwide.

Lamenting Time Lost

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

I've been a writer since I was a little girl. I remember as a child creating “books” that I would read to my parents and they would laugh and play along. As I grew up, my writing improved and I even won a writing contest in high school.

I went to school to be a teacher, but that didn't work out. I wanted to be a writer, but everyone told me that I needed to get a real job and not to focus on this writing daydream. So that was I did for 10 years. I focused my life on my work and nothing else.

Eventually, I got married and had a few kids and my priorities changed. They were my life now and work seemed less important. I quit my job and started my life as a stay-at-home mom. It was until recently that I decided to get back into writing and it depresses me to think that I have wasted so time on working instead of writing.

I've started being a full-time writer now as well as a stay-at-home mom. I sit and write what I can between breaking up the fights of my boys. As a career, it is rewarding and the potential income boost from being published is an an extra perk.

I do everything from fiction writing to article writing for many websites. I love being a freelance writer, but I am lamenting all the time I wasted working. Working is important, but I et it interrupt my muse.

Writing: The Perfect Pasttime For A Stay At Home Mom

Moms Turn to Blogging For Supportm Camaraderie

When I quit my job about five years ago to be a fulltime at home mom, I didn't realize how much I would miss the daily grind and making contributions to our family. My husband has just got a great new job and we both decided that if I wanted to stay home to take care of the kids, then I could.

After about a year, I really missed the feeling of contributing financially to my family. My husband was 100 percent supportive of me and I loved spending all my times with the kids, but I wanted something more. I thought about getting a part-time job, but that would take me away from the precious time I had with the hubs.

I wanted to do something from home, so I became a freelance writer/ blogger. I started my own blog and built it up using all the tools I could find. I spent many hours scouring webpages looking for ways to build my Twitter and Facebook followers and using my blog posts as clips to perspective clients.

It hasn't been easy, but I've gotten a pretty good stable of clients and I keep searching for more everyday. I write on my schedule, so I can write while the kids are at school or in bed and I can spend that extra time with my husband.

Freelance writing is not an easy profession and it is highly competitive, but its all worth it to feel more than just a stay-at-home-mom.

Las Balades Des Gnomes

A crazy themed B&B in Belgium that ranges from fairyland to out space

Belgium is home to what has to be one of the most unique and interesting bed and breakfasts in the country - Las Balades Des Gnomes.  This B&B, located well away from the trappings of civilization, offers visitors a variety of worlds to sleep in during their stay.  It was originally started up as a restaurant but since expanded to become the odd and fun place that it is today.

There are 10 themed rooms in the hotel, each one designed to appeal to a different taste.  Some of the room descriptions consist of forest, moon room,

troll’s lair, ship’s cabin and wine cellar.  The prize of the B&B is the Trojan Horse Room - a giant, three-storied wooden Trojan horse with a hollowed-out interior.

Each room reflects the theme that it was designed to carry.  Decorations create an atmosphere that can range from mystical to exotic to pure chaos.  Many of the rooms are very organic and make one feel more like they’re staying in some sort of fantasy world rather than a simple accommodation.

But unlike a typical fantasy world, this is a bed and breakfast and with the modernity comes the conveniences.  There are DVD players, mini bars and the

usual room perks, as well as a sauna, spa and a jacuzzi for visitors to relax in.

Las Balades Des Gnomes is a great place to both get away from the city and indulge in a little bit of fantasy.  If you plan on taking a vacation in Belgium, make sure to stop by and spend at least one night in one of its amazing rooms.  And bring a camera, because these are some memories you’ll definitely want to show off to friends.

The Walking Dead: Creep Factor To 10

Hello Guv'nor, You're a Psycho

As the mother of three boys, I can only imagine how I would feel if not only my boys died, but came back as flesh eating zombies. In the recent episode of The Walking Dead, we see the governor brushing the hair of his undead daughter and then part of her scalp rips off she kind of freaks.

The episode did a great job of letting us see exactly who the governor is behind that wide smile and pleasant demeanor. Michonne doesn't trust anyone, so she's been on to him since the beginning. So much that she breaks into his office and steals her sword back. While snooping around the back, she finds a pen filed with walkers and proceeds to ice them all.

Of course, she's captured and her and the governor have a nice little chat. In the end, she end up leaving without Andrea. Andrea finds out just how barbaric the town is when she see their favorite pastime Fight Club with zombies. The first rule of Zombie Fight Club: No One Bits In Fight Club.

Back at the prison, Rick goes batcrap crazy and goes on a one man zombie hunting mission. Apparently, Lori's entire body has been eaten and there's nothing left, but as she guts the zombie he thinks did it, the phone rings.

We can only guess who is on the other side. Ok, its probably Lori because he's frickin nuts and it goes along with the comic. Also, how many moms out there had a special feeling seeing Daryl with the baby?

Irish Abortion Laws Lead to Death of Miscarrying Mother

Do abortion laws threaten people based on their choice of religion?

It’s been all over the news as of late - a young woman dying in an Irish hospital because doctors refused to administer an abortion.  In case you haven’t been keeping up, the basics are that the woman was suffering from blood poisoning and tried to get an abortion due to her failing health.  Unfortunately, Ireland has some of the strictest laws when it comes to abortion and so the doctors denied her.  She finally ended up having a miscarriage and then the doctors removed the dead fetus, but it was by that time too late.  Her health had become so bad that she eventually succumbed and died.

Laws in Ireland permit the use of abortion when a mother’s life is at stake, but doctors are still reluctant to do it and potentially get themselves in hot water.  There is also the matter of religious orientation to consider, as well as potential “damage” to a doctor’s reputation should people find out and think that they’re performing abortions without cause.  In this case, the call may have been made in the wrong way, and for that the doctors responsible may suffer, but the incident brings more to light than simple doctor accountability.

The mother of the dead woman made a certain point about her daughter being Hindu and the fact that the laws are based in Christian ideology.  She believes that Hindus should not be subject to these laws if they are not in line with their religion.  The first part of her statement is certainly true - most abortion laws are in place because of a predominant religion taking hold of the legal system via popular support.  But can laws be properly made if they have to cater to all religions?  Does that remove the majority rule nature of democracy?

If that’s the case, then being denied an abortion can potentially be viewed as a form of religious discrimination.  That’s a huge can of worms that could undermine every law in existence.  But perhaps it is also something that people need to think about more with regards to creating and implementing new laws and reforming old ones.

In the end, it’s just one more complicated issue in the abortion debate, albeit a potential win for those on the side of pro-abortion.  A more secular view of the debate may help us to better define when it is and isn’t appropriate to allow an abortion.  There are already laws in place to prevent late-term abortions, but more steps need to be taken to ensure that women have proper access.  This may, in the end, rely on us being able to put religion aside, an unlikely event even in the most secular of countries.

Simple Delish: Nestle-Carnation Fudge Kit

A sweet, chocolatey confection is only a few steps away.

When I was growing up, one of my favorite holiday morsels was my aunt's fudge. It was the perfect mix of creamy, chocolatey richness...every bite was pure indulgence. It was her specialty, and the whole family went nuts for it every Christmas Eve. Year after year, my other aunts would ask for the recipe, and year after year, their requests would fall on deaf ears. My aunt's fudge recipe is still a secret to this day.

And, since she won't humor even her favorite niece and just pass it along, I've tried to find something comparable over the last few years. The results have been grim so far, and I've all but lost hope.

My husband did, however, stumble upon a quick kit from Nestle-Carnation that makes some pretty sweet treats with very little fuss. Their Rich & Chocolatey Famous Fudge Kit is incredibly easy to use and yields some delicious, creamy fudge if you do it right.

The kit is very basic: marshmallows, chocolate chips, evaporated milk, sugar mix and a disposable tray. The instructions are equally simple and easy to follow, making it great kit for beginners to the fudge making scene.

There are really two factors that can be the downfall of the Famous Fudge experience, temperature and over- or under-stirring. You have to be very careful to follow the written instructions closely or you're going to get dry, nearly inedible fudge.

If your aunt is as tight-lipped about her fudge recipe as mine is, I recommend giving the Nestle-Carnation Famous Fudge Kit a shot. As long as you don't fudge the steps, you're in for a delectable, chocolatey treat.
