Episcopalian Church Hosts Muslim Conference
When two religious communities try to break down the barriers between them and offer to help each other in an effort to promote understanding, one should consider this a great moment, right? Normally the answer would be yes, but to groups of closed-minded members of those religions it ends up being the worst thing ever. This is the case once again, as an Episcopalian church has offered to host a Muslim event and received piles of hate-email for their peaceful efforts.
The venue is All Saints Church in Pasadena, California and they’ll be letting the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) host a conference. In response, the world’s fastest form of letting someone know you’re an ass - email - has become the weapon of those with paranoid views and too much aggression.
People are claiming that Muslims are trying to trick naïve Christians by lying to them about tolerance when they really desire dominance. They’ve also accused the church of condoning terrorism, which is a popular go-to for the ignorant these days. They say that Muslims are trying to protect themselves by making Christian friends and have pointed fingers at the MPAC, claiming them to be a terrorist cell of the Muslim Brotherhood. One individual even compared these Muslims to Nazis (which is ironic, considering how much support the Nazi party received from American Christians back before World War II).
There have been no threats as of yet, just a tirade of anger at the mixing of religions. Ignorant people are reacting the same way that Muslims react in other countries when they see members of their own religion trying to open their minds to other faiths. When a religion sees its dominant position threatened, they attempt to shut down their opponents. Hate speech is one of the most effective ways to blind people to reality by using aggression.
Luckily there are people like those in the All Saints Church and the MPAC, working together to create a better future instead of trying to continue the centuries-old conflict that has become less than useless in a global world.
My New Best Friend: The Parking Lot Attendant
Every time I am denied service somewhere, I save money. Or at least that’s my new mantra as I try to make myself feel better.
The most heartening thing that’s happened to me in weeks was at the parking garage last night. My dad and I were talking about the Obama advertisement for the increased need for Food Banks and the parking attendant overheard our conversation. When I left the parking garage, the parking attendant let me out without paying and thumped his chest in a hearty motion. That’s the power of the people and his action left us both smiling.
I’ve seen too much of the opposite of the power of the people lately. It makes me sick to my stomach sometimes and I don’t know what to tell people. Did the woman overcharging me at H & R Block by $500 have the right to do so because she couldn’t live on social security? Did the guy embarrassed by his job at the Jersey Sub Shop have the right to add on a tip that I would have paid for anyway?
But it got worse than this.
I started to notice more pettiness, spite, and sheer malice around me for nothing. Nada. Fake Facebooks for people to make others feel bad. A news report from Australia about a nurse who committed suicide because of a prank call. More reports of attempts to intimidate people with mental disorders. Bitchy snide comments of a personal nature.
The power of Facebook is making people feel worse about themselves.
The worse the economy gets, the worse people seem to get to each other. We seem to have all become Scrooges, only without the big company to guide us. Instead, we are ruled by fear of the economy worsening and jealousy of those who are more fortunate than ourselves.
I stupidly got robbed by a pickpocket at a grocery store. She kept her job and my wallet because that is the way the system is going now. Even the suburbs aren’t safe.
It’s not like a Robin Hood story or an equal distribution of wealth. It’s a lack of resources and a lack of knowledge about how to get people to the right resources. I’m not saying that we have to use the “Pay it Forward” strategy because that didn’t end so well. I’m saying that common Respect and Dignity are sadly lacking from many of the people who “have good faces.”
Again, the most heartening, inspiring thing I witnessed in recent days was the thumping heartbeat from the parking lot attendant.
Pizza Hut cologne proves the Mayans may be right
There are things that happen in this world that really call to question the wisdom of our species. Or, really I guess the proper way to word it would be “How has our species not dumbed itself out of existence yet?” and to that, I have no answer. The scientific community is out on this, mostly due to cuts in funding such things so that we can teach dogs to drive and cats to wear bread on their faces so that they can take over where we have failed.
Our wisdom failure has become more complete when Pizza Hut turned to their Facebook page and asked fans what they would name a scent that mimicked "a box of Pizza Hut pizza being opened." (This is one reason I avoid Facebook like the plague; I don't need Pizza Hut or any other company stealing my imagination.)
The “winner,” if there was one, must have lost their imagination long ago, as had the PR people behind the whole thing. The winning name was “Eau de Pizza Hut." Following that, a little over 100 bottles were shipped out to Ontario to Pizza Hut Canadian fans. So BK did it once upon a time if I recall right.
I also see bacon-scented perfumes and cologne showing up. Do people realize that humans technically are still a prey animal? No? Well then again, that may do with the lack of wisdom, which I suppose may not be too bad. If our stupidity causes the Mayans to be right in the next few days, then it's the even stupider who will reak of food and make themselves easy targets in a world gone mad.
Digging up the history of beer brewing
Beer is one man-made item that sits on the shelf beside such inventions as iron, the printing press and electricity when it comes to the significance it has had on shaping the lives of people over the course of history. Though it may not have led to any scientific revelations (or may have?), it’s been present in cultures all over the world for thousands of years. Much is known about how beer has made its way from the medieval days to the place it holds in the present day, but as far as ancient beer brewing goes, there’s still much to be learned.
One new discovery has archaeologists digging up a 3500-year-old microbrewery in Cyprus. Dating from the Bronze Age, the site contains a kiln used for malting, pottery for storage, tools of various sorts and several other items that suggest that people back then were just as much the craft beer snobs that we are today. They found evidence of organics that would have been used in the flavoring of beers, meaning that “beer-flavored beer” wasn’t the only thing that people enjoyed after a long day’s labor.
Back in the day, beer was considered to be the healthier alternative to other foods. People often drank beer instead of water, due to the lack of precautions involved in the maintenance of clean water and a distinctively underwhelming sewer system. It wasn’t just an excuse to get drunk, this belief, but an actual fact of the times. Laws regarding its use or warnings to people about the damage it could cause weren’t a high priority. And so these microbreweries popped up wherever people created a demand.
Who knows? Maybe such finds will lead brewers in the modern age to rediscover some of the lost arts of creating unique and tasty brews. If only for that, digging up the past is worth it. Now, if only they could get the beer companies to sponsor such digs, we might be able to kill two birds with one stone.
GOP rethinks abortion stance
It looks like there’s a schism in the Republican Party where it comes to their stance on abortion. The last election went poorly and now some of them are rethinking whether they should be making abortion into a big issue at all. Future elections could possibly turn in their favor should they include one less hard-line element in their campaigns. The man making the biggest stink about it is Senator John McCain, although not all of his fellow party members are pleased with this.
According to McCain, the GOP needs to stop focusing on abortion in order to appeal to more Americans. His opponent Republicans reacted with many harsh words. They say he’s “turning his back on human life” and that he needs to “go back and rethink” why he was anti-abortion in the first place. They also expressed their belief that abortion is an issue that carries no room for compromise.
Maybe it’s statements like that last one that prompted McCain to want to dump this as a party-wide issue. The democratic process is all about compromise and without it nothing gets done. Of course, the cold reality is that a great number of Republicans are anti-abortion because it is their party platform, not because they personally believe that way. A strong stance on something means votes and votes, to many politicians, are more important than truths. The case I wrote on a month or so back, with the official who bullied his mistress into having an abortion, is proof that belief and political stance are two separate things.
But is a change in Republican policy actually a victory for the pro-choice movement? Will Republicans back off only to vote anti-abortion anyway? If they don’t speak on abortion, there’s a chance they’ll get the extra votes they need to get elected and once in office they can turn legislation whatever direction they wish and just apologize for it later. The only real hopeful thing this suggests is that Republicans are beginning to panic about being too strict on abortion. With any luck, this means that some will back off of pushing stricter laws as they try to make names for themselves as moderates in an effort to gain office. Where it goes from there remains to be seen.
Teacher suspended for allowing gay rights song to play in class
This week’s report of the ignorance involves a teacher in Michigan who decided to let one of her students play a song in class that just happened to promote gay rights. It was a rap song by artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis entitled “Same Love.”
The lyrics support same-sex marriage and talk about the life of a gay man and all the trials he has to undergo during the course of his life. One student didn’t like what the song had to say and complained to the principal, who then put the teacher on suspension indefinitely without pay.
When asked about the controversial issue, the teacher expressed her desire to promote tolerance of diversity within her classroom. Gay rights aside, even just the view into an alternate lifestyle such as the song spoke of is something that could be considered valuable to children learning about the world.
Suspending a teacher because they offend one person who doesn’t like gay rights being talked about is akin to suspending them for playing a video about a foreign culture because someone doesn’t like the fact that the culture isn’t following “American” or “Christian” values. It makes little sense for an educational institution to be so censored.
The main problem, at least according to the principal, was not that the song was talking about gay rights. He said that the teacher failed to go through the proper channels and have the song approved, as all things to be played in the classroom must be. In the end, that’s probably the best policy in that it protects the teacher from crazy parents. On the other hand, it also gives school authorities the opportunity to censor their educators.
Eventually, the suspension was lowered to three days and only one without pay. The administration has been rather supportive in this case, especially considering the potential fallout from ultra-conservative parents. Even just ten years ago the story would have read very differently and likely the teacher would have been fired for playing a song like this.
Is it a sign of the times and of our progress? Or just a sign that we still have a ways to go before teachers can feel free to talk about this very important historical change in our country and in our world?
Hogmanay Festival
Hogmanay is a way for those taking a visit to Scotland during the time of New Year’s to celebrate the holiday in a new and unique way. As can be expected, it takes place on December 31st every year and is honored in many places throughout the country. Hogmanay’s traditions are taken from Viking roots, incorporating pagan practices associated with worship of the sun and fire. Over the years, this holiday has gone through many incarnations, eventually evolving into what it is today.
Despite its differences, Hogmanay has most of your typical New Year’s stuff going on, such as drinking, eating and partying 'til dawn. It starts up in the early evening and continues through the night (and into the morning for those with enough endurance). There also is the standard singing of Auld Lang Syne when the clock strikes midnight. The rest of the festivities depend on which region of Scotland you happen to be in when the event is taking place.
Some of the more common events on the list are the singing of folk songs, dancing, processions of torch bearers, swinging balls of fire around from the ends of chains, bonfires and various concerts. Edinburgh boasts the best-known of these festivals and features such iconic events as The Loony Dock - in which people in fancy dress take a nice winter swim in the middle of the half-frozen river - and The Keilidh - a giant outdoor dance floor set up just for Hogmanay.
If you want to experience New Year’s in Scotland, the biggest of the celebrations occur in Edinburgh and Glasgow. This festive ringing in of the New Year is a great way to meet the people of Scotland while dancing, drinking and having fun. Who knows? You might even get lucky and earn yourself a midnight kiss from a Scot.
Hamauri Beach Day
Hamauri Beach Day is a tradition in Japan (though most prevalent in Okinawa) in which women, for one day of the year during the month of March, take the day off and go to the beach. The original intent behind this is rooted in the past, when women would seek to purify themselves each year by bathing in the sea. Those who celebrate Hamauri Beach Day still take some time out to take a dip, but now it’s more about just relaxing and enjoying time with friends and family than anything else.
The legend behind the ritual involves a young woman who was seduced by a gentleman stranger. The parents, upon discovering that she was pregnant, decided to find out more about the man. They followed him into a cave where they discovered that he was a snake in disguise. In order to prevent herself from giving birth to the snake’s children, the woman had to enter the sea. Most of that meaning has been lost over time, but many still believe that the ritual is useful for casting out bad spirits and promoting good health in young women.
Hamauri Beach Day today is a beach party of sorts. There is plenty of food, stage performances featuring almost exclusively female musicians, people singing and dancing and markets selling crafts and the like. Young women and their families gather together to enjoy the day while the men (usually) stay at home, doing the chores for the day.
This relaxed event is a good chance for female visitors to Japan to meet with the locals in an environment that caters to them. It is a unique celebration that can be enjoyable to anyone, regardless of where they come from and whether they believe in the tradition or not.
It's not writer's block.
When you spend a great deal of time writing for a living, there seems to be this point where you don't so much hit a wall, as the wall just flat out falls on top of you, or your muse decides she's bored and roams off with a bottle of scotch and a stack of books and locks herself in the attic. Writing for fun is one thing because often your mind is able to latch onto some sense of direction and keep fairly open to more abstract ideas.
When you're facing a deadline or a confined “theme,” it can get insanely difficult to find that spark to keep rolling. I wish I could go into just how insanely common this is and how frustrating it is. It's something I hear about almost constantly from other writers, from virtually every form of media.
There is something about it I don't think anyone really expected, more when you're allowed to basically write what you want (granted it's within a certain topic, which is alright because you enjoy it). The problem is that eventually you run out of things. You think “tomorrow or next week won't be so bad.” Then next week is just as bad.
So how and the hell do you work around that? It is your job after all, it's not like you can shelf it and take up a new hobby. To be honest, I've learned that the best things sometimes really do pop up by accident when you're not thinking about it.
You may be rambling with a friend about some totally silly topic and right there you find your topic. This seems to be a good guide for many things, just let go now and then, let things come to you. You'll go mad trying to seek them out yourself.
Bhangarh Fort
Located in the state of Rajasthan, the ruins of Bhangarh Fort have a reputation for being a hot-house of supernatural activity. It is considered by many to be the most haunted place in India and one of the top 10 most haunted places on the entire planet. Built in 1573, it was completely abandoned, along with the neighboring city of Bhangarh, by the year 1783. Though some live nearby, the old city still remains unoccupied due to its foreboding nature.
There are two legends that explain why Bhangarh Fort is cursed today. The first concerns a religious figure by the name of Guru Balu Nath. Living at the site where the fort is today, although before its construction, the guru approved the building
of the fort and its palace, though with one condition. He said that if ever the shadow of the palace touched him, he would curse it. One of the princes of a later time built the palace higher and higher, eventually breaking that agreement. The city was cursed and the people of the town left.
The other legend involves a princess and a magician. He was in love with the princess, but his station would never allow him to approach her. So instead, he tried to slip her a love potion. She ended up seeing him and tricking him, resulting in his death. With his dying breath, he cursed the fort and the city.
Those in the region take the haunting very seriously. There is even a legal prohibition against visiting the ruins before sunrise or after sunset. Some tales exist of people trying to sneak in and stay the night, never to return. There are also reports of figures moving about in the ruins at night, loud, maniacal laughter, screaming, flickering lights and spontaneous dust storms.Bhangarh Fort is a neat little piece of Indian history and a great destination for those interested in supernatural phenomena. Or, it’s also a nice place to visit for people who just want to see some amazing Indian ruins, even if they don’t believe.
