The best running parks in Bangkok
Oh Bangkok. You are loud, crazy, over-crowded, but full of culture. You may intimidate some, but once fully discovered, you are up there with other major metropolises around the world. With you being great for all things city dwellers love, it would only make sense that you also boast some great parks for running and exercise. Below is a list of some great places for runners to stay on track while visiting, or living in, Bangkok.
Benjakitti Park: Benjakitti Park may not be large, but it boasts some of the most beautiful views of the Downtown Bangkok skyline. The park is opposite the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, and is set on Lake Ratchada. Runners can follow a loop that encircles the lake, making a charming little run.
Chatuchak Park: Located in Northern Bangkok, Chatuchak Park is a haven for health nuts. Joggers, runners and any sort of exercising individual will find themselves in good company while working out here. The park has beautiful, unpaved paths, as well as a Thai Literature and Herb Garden. There is a small pond in the middle, as well as an adjacent golf course. After your run, you can even visit the Train Museum and Youth Traffic Garden!
Rot Fai Park: Though somewhat out of the city, Rot Fai is the park that boasts the second most space of any of the parks in the city. Rot Fai has shaded biking and running trials, as well as cross country style obstacles that are still remaining from the golf course that used to grace the space. The park is always filled with families, as well as soccer and Frisbee enthusiasts. Definitely make the trip out here for the flat, beautiful trails.
Lumpini Park: It wasn’t a mistake that I held Lumpini Park for last. Lumpini is by far the best running and exercise park in the city. Located directly on the MRT underground, Lumpini Park is the oldest and largest park in the city. There are loops that line the outside walls of the park, as well as smaller inner loops that circle the small pond. Locals come to dine on homemade picnics, and regardless of the heat, runners are always in abundance. Be weary of weekend running though, due to the largest market in Bangkok located directly on the south end of the park, causing lots of traffic.
Enjoy your runs in Bangkok, and make sure to look both ways at road crossings; Bangkok drivers aren’t known for stopping!
Upcoming elite action
While some lesser runners are starting to see their mileage take a dip due to the change in weather, elites are nearing championship season. With winter track right around the corner, those in the cross country world are starting to see all their summer, fall and winter training come to its peak. Below you’ll find your weekend guide for all the elite cross country action.
Footlocker High School Cross Country Championships
Held annually in San Diego, The Footlocker Cross Country Championships is the Super Bowl of high school running. Though Nike has turned their former team nationals into more of an individual race, Footlocker is the race that truly crowns the U.S. champ of high school running.
The big question this year on the boy's side is whether Junior Edward Cheserek can defend his title from last year, and join the rank of repeat champions such as Dathan Ritzenhein. His biggest competition is Sean McGorty from Virginia. McGorty blew away the south region a few weekends back, and is looking to make the race a dog fight.
On the women’s side, sophomore Anna Rohrer from the Midwest region is the women’s favorite. She blew away the west region, and has been dominate all season. Though she’s the favorite, Catarina Rocha of the Northeast Region (in her 3rd Footlocker appearance) and Sophie Chase of the south are looking to make the race interesting.
Head over to Letsrun on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST for the free live stream.
USATF Club Cross Country Championships
Though a certified national championship, with many professionals not running for particular clubs, USATF Club Cross is an interesting mix of sub-elites and elites duking it out in a team-based race. Prize money is split up between the winning teams, and unattached individuals are not able to run the race.
This year, more than 100 teams and 1,200 competitors will toe the line in one of the four races (open men and women, masters men and women) in Kentucky. With McMillian Elite not entering this year (McMillan is a full-time professional team) on both the men’s and women’s side the Boulder Running Company teams look very strong. The defending champs on the women’s side, Rogue Athletic Club, are still the team to beat though.
Along with some great teams, the big talk of this year’s race is that Alan Webb will be toeing the line. Though Webb is known for both his accomplishments and failures on the track, he has been known to knock out a few good road races. Cross Country will be a whole new ball game for him.

Woman Throws Cats into River
I recently came across a bit of news that pissed me off to no end. Some Persian cat breeder in the city of Springfield, Oregon was busted for stuffing two of her cats into a bag and throwing them into the river to drown. Luckily, the bag caught on a tree branch and some city workers were able to find and rescue them. But despite the fact that the cats came out unharmed, I have to wonder at what kind of person you have to be to think it’s okay to drown an animal?
It’s not even like kicking them out of the house, abandoning them to live on the streets. Although less than savory, at least they have a chance on their own, no matter how pampered they were in their domestic life. But to breed an animal (which is in-and-of-itself a screwed up thing, giving them horrible genes that make them prone to sickness) and then toss it into the river when it’s no longer wanted?
Unfortunately, the news articles I looked at didn’t say anything about why the woman decided to do this. What was her excuse for killing, in a very cruel way, a couple of cats that were guilty of nothing other than being under her care? She’s a breeder, so maybe these animals were defective in some way? Perhaps they had bad attitudes that made them unsalable and thus unprofitable? Or maybe she just decided that she had too many and that drowning a few wasn’t going to hurt anyone?
Whatever her reasons, it’s complete crap. If you can’t take responsibility for something that you’ve brought into the world and then put into a position where it has to rely on you, you should avoid getting involved in that responsibility. This sort of behavior is nothing short of borderline sociopathic. I wonder what said lady would have done if she had too many children. Would they have ended up in the river as well? Or perhaps a nice, cozy dumpster?
What makes it personal for me is that I’ve seen similar things during my time volunteering for the humane society. People get animals and then later decide they don’t want them, so they bring them to the pound to be adopted or, as is more common, put to sleep. A lot of times this has little to do with their ability to care for the animal and more to do with the fact that the critter was cute and tiny as a baby but since it’s grown up they find it to be more of a pain in their ass. Fkn’ people.
Human beings need to stop looking at animals as disposable things and stop acting like children when it comes to taking care of them. Actually, children are usually better at that responsibility and more loving than adults are, so I guess that statement is wrong. Every time I hear about someone doing something like this, it just reminds me of how many lazy, self-centered idiots there are in the world. No wonder crap’s so messed up. How are people supposed to care for their fellow human beings if they can’t even figure out how to care for a pet?
Crazy Japanese Commercials
If it’s one thing that Japan does stranger than anywhere else in the world, it’s the making of commercials. Living in the United States, I see my own fair share of some very bizarre commercials, but those from this small island country blow them out of the water. I have to wonder, however, whether these look strange from the inside of Japanese culture or not? Is it just us in the West that see these and scratch out heads in confusion? I’ve found some videos showing a few examples of what Japan has to offer, so you can make your own judgments.
The first on is a general compilation of some strange stuff. Some of these might even be considered to be genuinely creepy by my own cultural standards. None of them make too much sense. There also seems to be a proliferation of singing and dancing throughout this particular collection. See if you can figure out what’s going on.
I think the expression on the little girl’s face from the strange, orange-doll noodle commercial says it all. Or at the very least, it was remarkably similar to my own.
The next involves a popular American franchise that has invaded Japan in an attempt to make them fatter and have more heart attacks. That’s right, it’s McDonalds. This commercial, however, takes quite the different approach to selling hamburgers, one that perhaps we here in the states might think of adapting.
Screw the creepy clown, I want the sexy girl!
And finally, someone that most people will recognize right off the bat. It’s Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the day before he went into politics (and then left again and went back into movies). Even Arnie likes money, and there’s no better way to do it as a celebrity than making foreign commercials.
This is, I think, proof that it’s not just the Japanese. People from other countries are willing to jump on board the strange-train and perform outlandishly in front of the camera to sell products. Japan just happens to be the best at producing said strange products. But regardless of whether you come away from a Japanese commercial experience confused or not, you almost always come away a bit amused.
Stockholm’s Beer and Whisky Festival
The capital of Sweden, Stockholm has the honor of being home to one of the world’s largest and most prestigious drink-oriented events. It’s the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival, a celebration of Sweden’s growing passion with the two drinks. Many don’t know, but Sweden is quickly increasing their numbers of distilleries and breweries and is likely to be taking the beer and whisky world by storm in the near future. This festival gives one the opportunity to check out all these drinks early and in one location.
The festival takes place in two giant halls over the course of two weekends. Tens-of-thousands of people show up each year to sample an average of more than 15,000 different types of beer, whisky and other spirits. Though whisky and beer are certainly the highlight of the event, there is also the opportunity to sample many offerings of cognac, champagne, cider and more.
The beer selection is like a dream come true. There are craft beers from all over the world, many of which most people have never even heard of but plenty that are widely known. There are fine whiskies of both local and international origins. The best of the best is brought together under two roofs and one would find themselves hard-pressed to sample everything that the festival has on tap, even if attending every day of both weekends. These masterpieces of alcohol are served up by experts in their respective fields. They can let a visitor know anything they would want to about the brand and about the industry in general. They’re also usually willing to talk the trade with you if you have the time to listen.
In addition, the festival has all the other offerings one would expect from an event of this type. There are tasting events for both experts and beginners, seminars to teach more about the many aspects of these drinks, live music throughout the festival and lots of food from all over the world.
Both experts trying to deepen their knowledge and beginners just starting their journey will find something to learn here. Unfortunately, next year’s festival is still a ways away, being held during the weekends of September 29th to October 8th. For those looking to expand their knowledge of beer, whisky and other alcohols, this festival is a must.
Tentacle USB- you know you want it
Think Geek is by far one of my all time favorite places to go hunting for those special little things that just complete my geek life. Be it a taun taun sleeping bag, Umbrellas that look like the ones seen in Blade Runner, funky themed Tea sets, science based toys, you name it they most likely have it. Periodically though SOMETHING pops up thats ...questionable at best.
I present to you this Tentacle USB, Now, I really cant for the bloody life of me figure out exactly what its for beyond just blowing twenty five bucks for the sake of it. As you can see it moves when it's plugged in. That is it, it just moves. It does not even store data, it just wiggles. With social connections getting creepy in the digital age, such as body suits, or gloves, or * ahem* other things you plug in, and
it transmits that information to a “ partner set” elsewhere they made it basically so that long distance lovers could have those physical moments. People are weird however, and seeing a wiggling tentacle just seemed to make it seem that much worse for me, I feared we were moving into the Hentai department. Sure it's creepy my mind went there- but I assure you it would never have gone that way were it not for the absolutely insane amount of weird things already floating around. Why would someone want a wiggling USB driven that does not even function as anything? I really really really don't want to think about it too much.
They just dont get it: In game romance
Games today, as I've stated endless times over the past few years are no longer the little 3 hour time killers we can pick up and put down and think nothing of it. Most now are looking for something more dynamic, something to hook a player in. This is usually done through deep, and amazingly well put together stories that can take upwards of days and hundreds of hours to get through ( though thats not saying much for the film industry which is getting lazier ) Yet for all the ground they have gained in story telling, some of the most talented actors and actresses, impressive visuals, moving scores- they still fail in the romance department.
It's hard enough to bring all the elements together to actually spark a universal response from a large audience, to move them into caring for the world you have placed them into, having them form bonds and feelings for virtual characters painstakingly brought to life. Anymore they have gotten good at it, even the build up to love interests can be well done, I have to admit to having crushes on quite a few characters. However when all is said and done these are still cinematic and nature, and that means making that big push in romance. It does not matter if its a climactic build up to that moment a character finally says “ I love you” after weeks of building up tensions or goes into tasteful well placed ( or sometimes not) Sex scenes. They almost always seem to fall flat. It seems to be that that overwhelming explosion of emotion that comes from those real life moments is harder to replicate than one may expect, it could be overzealous attempts to make it seem more epic, actually pull it so far from reality that people become separated from it. I also notice that there is a climax, but never a leveling out period. Mass Effect is a good example, Lets say you romanced Liara in the first game, through most of the second she is not a companion, and she seems to have put you on the back burner slightly, you can reawaken that love when you get one of the many DLC, then you go into the third game you find yourself, yet again having to almost start from scratch with her despite the dame saves making it clear your “ history is well known and has been applied to the games” Once, Just once I would love to see a game trilogy, or a story driven MMO like the Old Republic have a romance take place, then you actually have a continued life with it. You have to nurture the relationship, deal with the fall out when you screw up, make tough calls , games CLAIM to do this but never really seem to pull it off, or Like Fable where you can marry and do have to maintain your family- it's more like a micromanaging minigame, there was no romance story, and you show up, give your spouse a gift now and then and put out, then you can run around again for days on end. That's not how it works guys.
