It's Not Twitter, Limit Your Status Updates

You don’t want to be “that person” who annoys everyone on your Facebook list.

Twitter and Facebook are both interesting social media sites, but they work a little differently. Twitter has a format that makes it acceptable to do a play by play of your entire day if you want to (this can get boring and you may lose followers if this is all you tweet) but nonetheless it is still acceptable.

Facebook on the other hand is not meant for you to post multiple statuses based on every breath you take.  Do you have anyone on your friend list that performs the following Facebook status behavior?

“Just woke up”

10 minutes later…

“Drinking coffee”

Fifteen minutes later…

“Watching TV while the kids take showers”

Twenty minutes later…

“Headed to the mall with the kids, gonna be fun”

10 minutes later, another update…

“Decided to stop at Wendy’s on the way to the mall”

Twenty minutes later…

“Got the best parking spot at the mall, right near Macy’s”

I think you get the point. No one literally needs to know each action that you do. Make one general post such as “Off today, excited to have a fun day with the kids at the mall”. That is the only status you need to post to explain your whole day. No one is going to “like” your multiple statuses relating to your daily schedule. All it does is flood the feed. When posting status updates, sometimes less is more.

You can post multiple statuses in a day, but mix it up and spread them out. Maybe post one status about your day, another status with song lyrics and a few hours later a post about a favorite TV show. You can also share other things on Facebook throughout the day such as photos, links to interesting articles and coupons.

Think before you post and space out your status updates if you don’t want to be “that person” who annoys everyone on your Facebook list. If you simply most post something every minute, you may better off using Twitter.
